Save the original and revised release dates, check the transaction record, and request cancellation before release or preload whenever your platform allows it. Treat a digital purchase as a licence to access the game, not as ownership of a transferable copy.

What a delay changes—and what it does not
A release-date announcement changes the schedule, not necessarily the sales contract. Stores decide whether a preorder can be cancelled, when money is collected, and what happens after a download or stream starts. A delay may be a clear refund event on one platform and only a customer-service request on another.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s 2025 inquiry describes online game-store purchases as a revocable licence to access and play a game. That distinction matters: you generally cannot resell a digital entitlement as you could a physical disc, and losing access can be governed by the store’s terms rather than by ownership rules.

Delay statistics also make it sensible to plan rather than assume the advertised date is firm. A 2022 study, An Empirical Study of Delayed Games on Steam, reported that 48% to 52% of games were delayed across genres. The figure is a study result, not a prediction for any particular title, but it shows why keeping preorder evidence and checking the platform’s deadline are worthwhile.

Policies can differ by country, edition, payment method and product type. The Steam and Epic rules above are platform policies; the PlayStation example is specifically the United Kingdom; the Nintendo example is specifically the United States.
Epic Games Store: the 30-day delay trigger
What Epic states
Epic’s billing and payment support explanation says that “The Game’s delay was delayed by more than 30 days” is a trigger for an automated refund. Read that as a policy threshold for an eligible purchase, not as a universal rule for every Epic transaction or every country. If the release becomes indefinite, Epic also describes the situation as “The Game’s delay is indefinite and the release date is unknown.”
Before and after release
Epic’s policy allows eligible pre-purchases to be refunded before release. Once the game has released, the ordinary eligibility test is 14 days from purchase and less than two hours of playtime. A delay that pushes the launch date out does not reset the purchase clock unless Epic’s policy or a support decision says it does, so check the transaction date rather than assuming a new release date starts a new period.

What to do
- Record the original release date and the revised date, or the notice that no date is known.
- Open your Epic account’s purchase or transaction history and confirm the order is an eligible pre-purchase.
- If the delay exceeds the stated threshold, look for the automated-refund option; otherwise submit a pre-release cancellation request through Epic support.
- Do not launch the game while deciding if you want to preserve the post-release playtime condition.
Steam: cancel any preorder before release
The key rule
Valve’s support page states: “Per Steam’s standard refund policy, you may refund your pre-order any time prior to the release of the game.” That means a delay does not need to reach a particular number of days. The decisive event is whether the game has released.
After launch
After release, Steam applies its normal two-week and under-two-hours rule. The two limits work together: a request outside either limit may be denied under the standard policy, although support can consider unusual circumstances. A postponed launch does not itself guarantee an exception.
Practical cancellation path
- Open Steam Support and select the purchase from your recent purchases or account history.
- Choose the refund or purchase-help option and identify that the game is still unreleased or that its date changed.
- Submit the request before the new release date. Keep the order confirmation and the publisher’s delay announcement in case support asks for context.
PlayStation Store in the United Kingdom
Why the payment date and preload matter
The cited UK policy allows cancellation any time before release when the preorder was paid for more than 14 days before release, but only if the main product has not started downloading or streaming. This creates two separate checks: how early you paid and whether delivery has begun.
Automatic downloads can therefore reduce your flexibility. A preload is still a download of the main product for this purpose, even if the game remains locked until launch. If you want to preserve the stated cancellation condition, review the console’s automatic-download settings and avoid starting the main game download while your decision is pending. Add-ons or bonus files may be treated differently from the main product; the policy wording centers on the main product.

Handling a delayed date
- Check the UK transaction receipt to confirm the payment date and the scheduled release date.
- Compare the new date with the original notice, and capture both for your records.
- Check whether the main product has downloaded or streamed, including through an automatic setting.
- If the conditions are met, request cancellation before the revised release. If not, contact PlayStation support and cite the changed schedule, while recognizing that a delay alone is not listed as an automatic refund trigger.
Nintendo eShop in the United States
Final-payment language
Nintendo’s US digital-products policy says: “Except as authorized by Nintendo or as required by applicable law, all payments that you make through the Nintendo Account services (including pre-purchases and subscription payments) are final and non-refundable.” A delayed release therefore does not, by itself, create a stated refund right. Nintendo may authorize an exception, and applicable law can require one, but neither possibility should be treated as automatic.
Charge and preload timing
Nintendo says payment is taken no sooner than seven days before release, and preloading can occur by then. If the date moves after payment, the account may already contain a downloaded, locked game. Keep the payment receipt and delay notice, then contact Nintendo support promptly if you are seeking an authorized exception. Do not assume that deleting the preload reverses the charge.
Does preloading count as downloading?
For platform rules that ask whether the main product has started downloading, yes: a preload is a download even though access is locked until launch. The PlayStation UK policy expressly ties cancellation to whether downloading or streaming has started, so an automatic preload can close the stated cancellation route.
Steam and Epic’s cited policies do not establish a general preload rule in the supplied terms. Nintendo’s US policy likewise does not promise a refund merely because a preload was removed or never launched. Keep the platform distinction clear: do not transfer a PlayStation-specific download condition to another store without checking that store’s policy.

How to avoid an accidental preload
- Turn off automatic game downloads or preloads where the console or store provides that control.
- Do not open the game or start streaming it while a refund decision is pending.
- Check both console settings and the individual game’s purchase page; a system-wide setting may not override a publisher-scheduled preload.
- Take a screenshot of the setting and the game’s download status if a dispute later arises.
When should you cancel a preorder?
Cancel as soon as the revised schedule no longer works for you and before the event that narrows eligibility: release, preload, streaming or a store-specific deadline. Waiting for a final date can be risky when a platform permits cancellation now but offers no automatic remedy later.
A decision checklist
- Platform and region: Identify the exact storefront and country on the account, not just the console manufacturer.
- Payment date: Find the receipt and note whether payment was immediate or close to launch.
- Release status: Save the original date, revised date and any statement that the date is indefinite.
- Delivery status: Check whether the main product has downloaded, preloaded or streamed.
- Use: Do not play the game if a post-release time limit may apply.
- Request timing: Submit the cancellation before release or preload when the policy allows it, and retain the confirmation number.
Will a release-date change automatically refund you?
Usually not. Epic identifies a delay of more than 30 days as an automated-refund trigger in its support explanation. The other cited policies do not state an automatic delay refund: Steam relies on its pre-release cancellation rule, PlayStation UK relies on payment timing and whether downloading or streaming began, and Nintendo US treats payments as final unless an exception or law applies.
An email announcing a new date is not the same as a refund confirmation. Check the transaction page to see whether the order was actually cancelled and whether money has been returned to the original payment method.

How to document and submit a request
- Save the store receipt showing the title, edition, order number, price, currency and payment date.
- Save the original release announcement and the revised announcement, including the date each was posted.
- Record whether the game downloaded, preloaded or streamed, and when.
- Open the store’s support or order-management page while the preorder is still active.
- State the platform, country, order number, original date, revised date and the remedy requested: cancellation and refund.
- Quote the relevant policy condition without claiming more than it says—for example, Steam’s pre-release rule or Epic’s stated 30-day trigger.
- Keep the case number and any approval message until the refund appears on the payment account.
If the first response denies the request, ask which condition caused the denial and whether a regional statutory right or an authorized exception applies. Do not repeatedly submit conflicting claims; a clear timeline is more useful than a general statement that the game was delayed.
Regional law, physical copies and special cases
Store policies are not the whole legal picture. Consumer law in your country may provide cancellation, conformity or misleading-practice rights that a store’s standard terms do not remove. Those rights vary by jurisdiction and by whether digital delivery has begun, so identify your country before relying on a policy written for another market.
The examples above concern digital storefronts. For a boxed or cartridge copy, the retailer’s return policy controls the ordinary process, and no universal physical-copy delay rule was established here. A retailer may have shipped the item, opened the packaging or tied the sale to a preorder deposit, each of which can change the result.
Bundles, deluxe editions, subscriptions, in-game currency and promotional bonuses can have separate terms. Ask support to explain whether cancelling the main game also cancels attached content and whether any consumed bonus affects the refund.

- Ignoring the region: The PlayStation condition cited here is UK-specific, while the Nintendo final-payment language is US-specific.
- Letting preload run: On PlayStation UK, starting the main download or stream can end the stated cancellation eligibility.
- Waiting until launch: Post-release time and play limits can replace the more flexible preorder rule.
- Deleting the game and expecting a refund: Removing files does not by itself reverse a completed digital payment.
- Failing to preserve evidence: Without the original date, revised date and transaction record, support has less basis to reconstruct the case.
Bottom line
Use the rule for your own storefront, country and order—not a general “delayed games are refundable” assumption. Steam is the clearest: cancel any time before release. Epic identifies an automated refund when a delay exceeds 30 days and allows eligible pre-release refunds. PlayStation UK requires attention to the payment window and unfinished download or streaming, while Nintendo US generally treats pre-purchase payments as final unless Nintendo or applicable law provides an exception. Capture the timeline, prevent accidental preload where possible, and submit the request before the next eligibility event.
