Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For freelancers, a VPN is most useful on Wi-Fi you do not control—such as in a café, hotel, or coworking space. It encrypts traffic between your device and a VPN server, which can reduce what the local network or internet provider can see. It does not make you anonymous or secure a compromised device. No evidence here establishes a universal best VPN; Proton VPN is a candidate with documented features and a vendor-reported audit history, not an independently proven overall winner.
When a VPN helps a freelancer
A VPN creates an encrypted connection from your device to a VPN server. This can help protect network traffic from exposure on a public or otherwise untrusted Wi-Fi network. The trade-off is that trust shifts: instead of relying only on the local network or internet provider, you also rely on the VPN provider and its handling of data.

CISA’s wireless-security guidance recommends using a VPN when one is available on public wireless networks and cautions against sensitive activity when a secure VPN connection is unavailable. A VPN is one layer of protection, not a replacement for HTTPS, device security, software updates, or strong account protections.

Useful situations
- Connecting through café, hotel, airport, or coworking Wi-Fi that you do not administer.
- Reducing the local network’s visibility into your connection while traveling.
- Adding an encrypted tunnel when your work setup or client policy permits VPN use.
When to check first
Some clients require a particular VPN, managed device, or approved access method. Confirm their requirements before routing work traffic through a consumer VPN; a consumer service does not automatically satisfy a client’s security or compliance rules.

What to compare before choosing
Security features and app behavior
Check whether the service offers a kill switch, DNS leak protection, and well-supported protocols. A kill switch is intended to block network traffic if the VPN tunnel drops; check how it behaves in the provider’s apps on the operating systems you use. DNS handling matters because DNS requests can reveal which services you are looking up if they leave the tunnel. A feature list alone does not establish how reliably protections work in every situation.
Devices and everyday workflow
Verify that there are apps for each device you use for work, including laptops and phones. Consider whether connecting and disconnecting is straightforward and whether your conferencing, file-sharing, and work applications function as expected through the VPN. No comparative speed or video-call performance testing is established here, so do not assume any provider will be faster or trouble-free for your particular connection.

Privacy policy and audit scope
Read the logging policy rather than treating “no logs” as self-proving. Look for independent reviews and check who performed them, when, what systems or processes were examined, and whether the report is publicly available. An audit is evidence about the specific scope and period reviewed, not proof about every product system or future practice. Also consider what account, billing, or support information a provider retains.
Price and terms for your country
Compare the full cost, including the renewal rate, subscription length, device limits, cancellation process, and refund terms. Prices and terms can differ by country and change over time; current rates have not been established here, so check the provider’s checkout and terms pages before subscribing.

Documented VPN candidates—and what the evidence says
The available provider-specific evidence supports comparing features and audit claims, not naming a definitive winner. The details below come from provider pages and should be read as vendor-published descriptions rather than head-to-head independent testing.
| Service | Documented information | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | Its feature page lists WireGuard and OpenVPN support, custom connection profiles, and DNS leak prevention. In an article updated June 16, 2026, Proton VPN says it passed five consecutive annual third-party no-logs audits, with the latest conducted by Securitum: audit announcement. | These are relevant features and a published audit history, but the count and product descriptions are reported by Proton VPN. Review the linked report for the examined scope; do not treat the audit as a guarantee about every system or future operation. |
| NordVPN | Its no-logs page says its practices have been examined six times, with later examinations by Deloitte. | This is the provider’s account of its audit history. Confirm the latest report, date, and scope before relying on it; it does not establish superiority over another VPN. |
Proton VPN’s June 16, 2026 article quotes the Securitum report: “The technical evidence reviewed during the engagement did not indicate that the examined Proton VPN server infrastructure logs users’ browsing activity, DNS queries, destination services, network traffic contents or user-identifiable connection metadata.” The statement is limited to the infrastructure examined during that engagement; read the provider’s audit article for its linked report and context.
Rank #4
- ALL-IN-ONE VPN SOLUTION FOR REMOTE WORK: Extends your corporate network to homes or remote offices, enabling access with enhanced security to resources without complex setup. Ideal for small businesses, entrepreneurs, and enterprises supporting remote or hybrid teams
- ENTERPRISE-GRADE SECURITY & ENCRYPTION: Helps protect sensitive data using IPSec, PPTP, L2TP, OpenVPN, SSL, and strong encryption (DES, 3DES, AES), reducing risk from external threats in an increasingly digital landscape
- FOLLOWS NDAA & TAA FOR ENHANCED TRUST: Made in Taiwan. Meets government and industry standards, making it well-suited for agencies and businesses under strict regulations, while providing reassurance for any organization seeking elevated data protection
- DUAL WAN FAILOVER FOR CONTINUOUS CONNECTIVITY: Automatically switches to a backup internet source if the primary goes down, minimizing disruptions to crucial tasks like video calls or file sharing. Load balancing ensures optimized bandwidth for smoother, more reliable performance
- SIMPLIFIED MANAGEMENT: Web-based and SNMP tools offer clear visibility and control, reducing complex troubleshooting and making it easier to deploy
What a VPN cannot protect
- Account-based identification: A VPN does not stop a service from recognizing you when you sign in, nor does it erase cookies or other browser identifiers. See Proton VPN’s explanation of tracking while using a VPN.
- Compromised devices: A VPN does not neutralize malware or fix an insecure, outdated device.
- Monitoring on managed devices: If an employer or client controls your device, monitoring software on that device can still observe activity. A VPN does not remove that software or override its access.
- Every threat to client files: A VPN protects a network connection to the VPN server; it does not by itself secure files stored on a device, prevent unsafe sharing, or replace client-approved controls.
A practical selection checklist
- Confirm whether your client requires a specific VPN or managed access setup.
- Choose a provider with apps for your work devices and check its kill-switch, DNS, and protocol details.
- Read the privacy policy and inspect the date, auditor, scope, and public availability of any independent report.
- Check that your essential work tools function through the VPN on the networks and devices you use.
- Compare current local pricing, renewal terms, device limits, cancellation, and refund conditions before paying.
For broader comparison context, Comparitech’s guide to VPNs for remote workers and freelancers is another source to consult, but its rankings should not substitute for checking current features, terms, and audit scope yourself.
