When your child reaches a Screen Time limit, they can request more time from the app or device. Approve the request in Messages for 15 minutes, one hour, or the rest of the day—or approve it on the child’s device with your Screen Time passcode.
Approve a request from your device in Messages
- On your child’s iPhone or iPad: Open the app that reached its limit and tap Ask for More Time.
- On your device: Open the request in Messages.
- Choose Approve for 15 minutes, Approve for 1 hour, or Approve all day. Your child will see if you decline the request.
Apple documents this request flow for a child who wants extra time outside a Time Allowance or Screen Time Schedule.

Approve the request on your child’s device
- On the child’s device, open the request and tap Approve on Device.
- Enter the Screen Time passcode.
- Select the amount of extra time to approve.
Check the family’s software and setup
Apple says its redesigned iOS 27 parental controls require every device in the Family Sharing group to run version 27 or later. If some devices cannot update, the family can continue using the previous Screen Time controls or adjust controls directly on the child’s device. Apple also says the parent or guardian should be in the child’s contacts so requests can be sent for approval. See Apple’s current Screen Time and Family Sharing guidance for setup details.

Why older instructions may look different
In Apple’s redesigned iOS 27 controls, the relevant terms are Time Allowances and Screen Time Schedules. Older iPhone instructions may instead use App Limits and Downtime. Apple’s earlier guide also documents a route through Settings > Screen Time: select the family member, review the request, and choose an approval duration. Labels and routes can differ by software version, so follow the wording shown on the devices in your family.

If the request does not appear
Confirm that the parent or guardian is in the child’s contacts, as Apple lists this as a requirement for sending requests. That is a useful setup check, but Apple’s guidance does not establish a single cause or complete troubleshooting procedure for every missing request. You can also use the documented on-device approval route if the request is available there.
