How FR3 Spectrum Could Support 6G Coverage and Capacity in India

FR3 could add capacity to future 6G networks in India, but bands above 7 GHz remain subject to WRC-27 study and later Indian assessment. Here is what the roadmap establishes—and what it does not.

FR3 could give future 6G networks in India more room for capacity than lower mid-band alone, while offering a more useful coverage balance than very high-frequency bands. But it is a candidate spectrum layer, not a deployed Indian 6G service: the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) distinguishes spectrum already made available or planned for IMT from bands still under international study, and any later Indian use depends on regulatory decisions, protection of incumbent services, network economics and equipment availability.

What FR3 means—and why it is being considered

FR3 commonly refers to spectrum from 7 to 24 GHz. It is an upper-mid-band candidate for future mobile networks: higher frequencies can make wider channels possible, potentially adding capacity, while avoiding the very high-frequency profile associated with mmWave and sub-terahertz. That is a potential, not a guaranteed increase in user speeds or coverage. Available bandwidth, channel configuration, radio equipment and network design determine what a deployed system can deliver. Technical literature also notes that FR3 measurements remain limited, so simulated or early technical results should not be treated as proven Indian field performance (Cui, Zhang and Pollin, “6G Wireless Communications in 7–24 GHz Band” (2023)).

FR3 is not another name for every band near 6 GHz. The DoT roadmap sets out specific Indian band ranges and statuses; some are below 7 GHz, and the ranges above 7 GHz most directly associated with FR3 remain WRC-27 study candidates rather than finalized Indian IMT assignments.

What India’s spectrum roadmap says

The DoT’s 2026 Spectrum Roadmap for 6G services organizes planning into short-term (2025–2026), medium-term (2027–2030) and long-term (2031–2035) periods, aligned with international processes including WRC-27. Its stated spectrum quantities are planning and availability figures—not coverage measurements, network capacity or promised consumer data rates.

Band range Quantity or roadmap status What it means
6425–6725 MHz and 7025–7125 MHz 400 MHz described as made available for IMT in the 2025–2026 short-term plan Subject to restrictions to protect space-based services. These ranges are not all FR3 under the common 7–24 GHz definition.
6725–7025 MHz 300 MHz planned for IMT in the 2027–2030 medium-term plan Planned availability is subject to restrictions; it is not a statement that a nationwide network is already using the band.
7125–8400 MHz, or selected portions Listed for WRC-27 sharing, compatibility and technical-condition studies After any IMT identification at WRC-27, India says it will assess whether the spectrum could be refarmed for IMT.
14.8–15.35 GHz Listed for WRC-27 studies Any later Indian assessment for possible IMT refarming follows the international identification process.
4400–4800 MHz Listed for WRC-27 studies This is a study candidate in the roadmap, but it is below the usual 7–24 GHz FR3 range.

The Ministry of Communications’ 11 December 2024 parliamentary reply likewise described 7125–8400 MHz (or portions) and 14.8–15.35 GHz among the ranges being studied internationally, with identification to be decided at WRC-27 (Ministry of Communications, 11 December 2024). “Under study” is not the same as a final Indian allocation, and the roadmap’s post-WRC-27 assessment does not itself establish a deployment date.

How FR3 could add capacity

Capacity is the strongest part of the FR3 case. Additional spectrum can let operators use wider channels or serve more traffic, particularly where many users compete for network resources. The benefit would depend on the amount of spectrum actually made available, whether it can be used in suitable contiguous channels, and whether radios and devices support it. The roadmap’s 400 MHz and planned 300 MHz figures describe spectrum quantities and planning status; they do not mean that an individual user would receive those amounts of bandwidth or a corresponding speed increase.

India’s DoT describes 1–7 GHz mid-band as a “coverage and capacity layer” for 5G and early 6G. In the roadmap’s words, “The Mid-band spectrum (1 GHz to 7 GHz), often designated as the coverage and capacity layer, will serve as the backbone for 5G and early 6G deployments, providing a balance between coverage and capacity.” (DoT, Spectrum Roadmap for 6G services (2026)) FR3 could complement that foundation with further capacity where demand justifies it; it should not be read as a replacement for lower-frequency coverage or as proof that the higher band will be used everywhere.

What higher frequency means for coverage

Moving upward in frequency generally makes it harder for a signal to cover the same area and handle obstructions as effectively. The Bharat 6G Alliance’s spectrum roadmap cautions that reusing the existing site grid becomes more challenging as operators move above India’s 3.5 GHz deployment band. It identifies extreme MIMO and higher EIRP as possible mitigations, but not as a guarantee that existing sites will suffice (Bharat 6G Alliance, Spectrum Roadmap for 6G in India).

  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

That makes FR3 a balancing decision rather than a simple coverage upgrade. In a dense urban area, added capacity may justify antenna upgrades, more sites or other network changes. In a wide rural service area, the economics of adding sites for a higher-frequency layer may be less attractive. The right answer depends on propagation, geography, traffic demand and the coverage target; the supplied plans do not establish a single site-density requirement or an Indian FR3 coverage radius.

What must happen before 7–8 GHz becomes an Indian 6G layer

  1. International identification: WRC-27 must complete the relevant sharing, compatibility and technical-condition studies and decide whether the candidate spectrum is identified for IMT.
  2. Indian spectrum decision: DoT’s roadmap says India will assess possible refarming after IMT identification. Any assignment would need to address protection requirements for incumbent services, rather than treating the full study range as immediately usable.
  3. Network and device readiness: Compatible standards, radios, antennas and user devices must become available. The Ministry’s 2024 reply explicitly connected technology deployment with device-ecosystem availability.
  4. Deployment case: Operators would need to weigh usable bandwidth and expected traffic against site densification, equipment upgrades and coexistence measures in each target area.

The Bharat 6G Alliance is part of India’s broader ecosystem work: the Press Information Bureau reported 90 member organisations as of 15 July 2026 (Press Information Bureau, 22 July 2026). That is ecosystem context, not evidence that FR3 radios, consumer devices or a commercial FR3 6G network are already available in India.

What readers can conclude now

  • “What is the 7 GHz band for 6G?” There is no single 7 GHz band in the roadmap. The 7125–8400 MHz range, or selected portions, is a WRC-27 study candidate; nearby ranges have distinct statuses and restrictions.
  • “Will India use 7–8 GHz for 6G?” It is a possibility under study, not a settled allocation or confirmed deployment. The roadmap places assessment after WRC-27 identification.
  • “When will India allocate spectrum for 6G?” The roadmap provides planning periods for some bands, but it does not give a commercial launch date for FR3. An international decision, a subsequent Indian assessment and a viable network and device ecosystem all matter.

For any claim that FR3 will improve a particular Indian service, check whether it refers to a finalized band assignment or a study candidate, what bandwidth and restrictions apply, and whether the claim concerns modeled potential or deployed performance. Until those details are established, FR3 is best understood as a possible upper-mid-band capacity layer whose coverage and cost will depend on how India ultimately authorizes and builds it.
