A foldable phone hinge is a synchronized mechanism, not just a pivot. It has to move both halves together, control the force and feel of opening, keep the device aligned, and let the flexible display bend without concentrating too much stress at the crease. Designs differ, but manufacturer descriptions alone do not establish which current hinge lasts longest: the available claims are not backed by comparable independent cycle-life tests.
What a foldable hinge has to do
In a book-style foldable, the hinge joins two phone halves while the inner display spans the joint. Opening the phone therefore involves more than turning one panel around an axle. The mechanism must coordinate the halves, guide their movement, and manage the force and friction the user feels. It also has to hold the phone at intended angles and make room for the screen and other components.

These jobs interact. A hinge that moves unevenly can affect alignment; the display and hinge also share the repeated bending and mechanical stress around the fold. A design may seek a smoother opening feel, less visible creasing, improved debris management, or a more compact arrangement inside the phone. Those are related engineering goals, not interchangeable proof of long-term durability.

How the halves move together
Conventional geared coordination
Google describes a typical geared hinge as using four gears with interlocking teeth. The gears make the two halves rotate symmetrically as the phone opens and closes. This is Google’s explanation of a conventional approach, not an independent survey establishing that every foldable hinge uses the same arrangement.
In this arrangement, the gear teeth connect the motion of the two sides: as one side turns, the gearing helps make the other side turn in coordination. That synchronization matters because the inner display crosses the joint. Google’s account also identifies a possible trade-off: dust caught between gear teeth can interfere with the basic opening and closing experience. This is a manufacturer’s explanation of a design concern, not proof that every geared hinge will be affected in the same way.
For the original Pixel Fold, Google described a 180-degree fluid-friction hinge. The company said it moved components to the ends of the phone, out from under the display. Google also said its team manually folded prototypes and used a machine to repeatedly open and close them. That account did not publish a cycle count, so it does not show how many folds the finished phone—or another model—can withstand.
Google’s gearless cam design
For the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Google describes a different way to synchronize the halves: connected, spring-loaded cams. As the phone rotates, the cams convert rotational movement into linear movement. Because the parts connect across the hinge, opening one half forces the other to follow. Google industrial designer Sangsoo Park called it a “gearless hinge,” while architect Yongho Lim explained that the connected cams make one half follow when the other opens.
Google says removing gears avoids a place where dust can collect and frees space inside the phone. Park’s explanation is that dust caught between gear teeth can degrade the opening and closing experience over time. These statements explain Google’s design rationale; they do not prove that gearless mechanisms generally last longer, or that this model will be immune to debris or wear.
In an engineering article published October 9, 2025, Park described the gearless change as the biggest change to the hinge. Lim’s explanation focuses on the connected cams: when one half opens, the other is forced to follow. These details help explain how Google intends the mechanism to work. They do not supply a cycle-life result or establish how the cams compare with another company’s hinge under identical use and test conditions.

Samsung’s water-drop and multi-rail approach
Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold7’s Armor FlexHinge combines an enhanced water-drop shape with a multi-rail structure. The stated aim is to distribute stress, reduce visible creasing, and strengthen durability. Samsung also describes changes to the surrounding frame and inner display: its announcement says the ultra-thin glass is 50% thicker than before and that a titanium plate layer was added. Those are Samsung’s generation-to-generation comparisons and design claims, not a head-to-head test against Google or another manufacturer.
The water-drop description refers to the shape Samsung says it uses in the hinge design; the company’s stated rationale is to manage stress around the fold. The multi-rail structure is likewise described as distributing stress. Those features should be read alongside the display changes Samsung reports, because a foldable’s durability involves both the moving joint and the flexible screen spanning it. The announcement does not isolate how much any single feature contributes to service life.
What the public design descriptions do—and do not—show

The descriptions differ in what they emphasize, so they cannot be ranked by wording alone. Google explains how its cams coordinate motion and why it removed gears; Samsung emphasizes stress distribution and the display stack. A fuller comparison would need details such as the hinge’s motion behavior, how the display and joint share stress, protection from debris and moisture, and a test protocol that measures the same outcomes under the same conditions.
For a useful model-to-model comparison, ask what the mechanism does, how the company says it handles stress, what protection claims and care warnings apply, and what reliability evidence is published. A feature list can explain a manufacturer’s priorities; it cannot answer whether one design lasts longer unless the phones are evaluated with comparable tests. The information described here does not provide that kind of independent comparison.
Why a fold-count claim needs its test conditions
Repeated opening and closing is relevant, but a durability figure is meaningful only when its measurement is clear. Useful details include the number of cycles, the angle and load, environmental conditions, what counted as a failure, and whether the test was conducted independently. Without comparable conditions, a large-sounding claim cannot tell you whether one phone will outlast another in everyday use.

“Over 10 years” is a time-based phrase, not a fold count by itself. To translate years into a number of cycles, a reader would need to know how many times per day the phone was assumed to fold. The announcement does not state that frequency, so it would be misleading to calculate or imply a specific cycle total from the phrase.
Google’s 2023 account of prototype testing also says the team manually folded units and used a machine to cycle them, but gives no count. Samsung’s cited announcement describes its hinge and display changes but does not provide a comparable independent cycle-life result. The available figures and descriptions therefore do not establish a durability winner among these designs.
Dust, water, and everyday care
Keep debris away from the moving joint
Dust can matter because it may interfere with moving parts or reach the display. Google identifies trapped dust between conventional hinge gears as a concern. Motorola’s support guidance for the razr fold warns that dust exposure can shorten hinge life and damage the display. Motorola also says the device is not dust proof and that resistance decreases with normal wear.

Do not assume that a phone’s resistance to some conditions means its hinge is sealed against every kind of debris. Motorola’s warning is a reminder that dust exposure can matter even when a device has protective features. Read water-resistance ratings narrowly
Samsung lists IP48 for the Galaxy Z Fold7. Samsung says its water rating is based on controlled laboratory submersion in up to 1.5 meters of freshwater for up to 30 minutes. The company advises against beach or pool use and warns that resistance may diminish through normal wear. These conditions are not a promise that the phone is waterproof or safe in every water exposure.

A rating describes performance under specified conditions, not immunity from damage. In particular, the Samsung lab note concerns freshwater submersion; it should not be expanded into a claim about saltwater, pool water, dustproofing, or a worn device. For a buyer, the practical question is not simply whether a model carries a rating, but what the rating’s stated conditions cover and what the maker says to avoid. Samsung’s figures describe controlled testing, while its beach-and-pool warning and note about normal wear narrow how those figures should be interpreted in daily use.

Look beyond phrases such as “stronger” or “more durable.” Use the same questions for each model, and separate a described design feature from evidence that it survives longer:
- Motion mechanism: Is the hinge described as using gears, cams, rails, friction, or another arrangement? How does the manufacturer say the halves stay synchronized?
- Stress management: What does the maker say about hinge geometry and the display layers around the crease? Are its comparisons with a previous generation, or with another phone?
- Debris and ingress: What rating and test conditions are stated? What does the care guidance say about dust, water, and normal wear?
- Durability evidence: Is there a cycle count, and are the load, angle, environment, failure criteria, and test independence explained?
- Support context: Check the warranty terms and repair options for the exact model and market. The manufacturer descriptions above do not establish repair pricing or coverage.
If a maker gives a lifetime figure without explaining the folding frequency or test method, keep it in the category of a manufacturer claim. A mechanism description can help you understand how a phone is intended to work; it is not a substitute for comparable reliability evidence.
Also keep marketing comparisons in context. Samsung’s 50%-thicker ultra-thin glass figure compares the Z Fold7 with a prior generation, and Google’s “twice as durable” phrase compares the Pixel 10 Pro Fold with its predecessor. Neither statement alone compares current phones across brands. The cited announcements do not provide independent test protocols that would let a buyer make that ranking.
Repair costs, warranty exclusions, and repair availability can vary by model and market, so check the terms that apply to the particular device before buying. Does a foldable phone hinge get damaged easily?
