Often, but not automatically. Newer hinge designs and folding displays have posted stronger results in controlled cycle tests, yet a fold count measures a particular component under particular conditions—not the guaranteed lifespan of an entire phone. The hinge, flexible inner screen, frame, seals, battery and software can age at different rates.
Use cycle figures as evidence of engineering progress, then check the exact model’s test method, screen construction, service terms and handling requirements. A phone that survives more laboratory folds may still be damaged by a drop, grit in the hinge, scratches or a manufacturing defect.

What an improved hinge can change
“Improved hinge” is not one universal specification. A redesign may alter the hinge’s mechanical parts, the way it absorbs shock, the path used to remove debris, or the support structure underneath the folding display. Those changes can reduce stress during opening and closing, but they do not make every surrounding component equally durable.

The hinge controls how the two halves move, where resistance is felt and how evenly force reaches the display. Better alignment and damping can reduce localized stress. Some designs also provide more controlled stopping positions, which may reduce accidental slamming. Manufacturers normally report these claims as cycle ratings for the mechanism, not as a promise that a complete handset will operate for that many cycles.

Display support
A folding OLED panel bends repeatedly, so the layers above and below it matter. A stronger support plate, a more elastic adhesive or a structure that spreads pressure can reduce strain at the crease. These improvements are separate from the hinge’s bearings, gears or flex cables. A phone can therefore have a highly rated hinge and still develop a display problem.
What the available cycle tests actually show
The figures below are not interchangeable. They involve different components, test machines, samples and conditions.
| Evidence | Result and conditions | What it measures | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Display announcement, July 2025 | Galaxy Z Fold7 panel remained fully functional after 500,000 folds over 13 days at 25°C (77°F), with verification by Bureau Veritas. Samsung Display translates the count to more than ten years at 100 folds per day or more than six years at over 200 folds per day. | A controlled folding-display-panel test. | It is not a whole-phone lifespan, a hinge-only result or protection against drops, scratches, debris or defects. |
| Samsung Gulf support page, July 1, 2026 | Galaxy Z Fold6 and Flip6 mechanisms are rated at an average of 200,000 cycles. Samsung’s usage example says about 100 folds daily corresponds to more than five years of mechanism use. | A manufacturer average rating for the folding mechanism. | It is not an observed service life for every handset or owner. |
| Samsung LEVANT support page, updated September 5, 2023 | Fold5 and Flip5 Flex hinges are described as designed for over 200,000 folding and unfolding cycles on average. | A manufacturer design rating for the hinge. | It cannot be compared directly with a display-panel test. |
| Which? independent testing, models tested since 2020 | 58 of 59 foldable models passed a 30,000-cycle machine test; Which? identifies an early model as the exception. | Repeated opening and closing across a larger independent sample. | It does not predict how every current model will perform after years of varied use. |
| TechRadar report, 2023, on a manual comparison | One Motorola unit reached 43,800 hinge folds and 126,300 screen folds; one Samsung unit reached 223,000 hinge folds. | Observed results from individual manually folded devices. | The sample was very small, so these are not representative failure rates or a brand ranking. |
| Which? screen testing | Foldable screens averaged 1.3 out of 5 for scratch resistance, while a typical glass smartphone screen scored 5 on the same scale. | Relative resistance to scratching. | Scratch performance is a different durability question from hinge-cycle endurance. |
How to read the Fold7 panel result
Samsung Display attributes the panel’s result to several construction changes, including thicker outer Ultra Thin Glass, a high-elastic adhesive, a flattening structure and a titanium support plate. Bureau Veritas verification adds independent confirmation that the stated panel test was carried out as described. It still remains a laboratory result at a specified temperature and timescale. It does not show that the hinge, frame, cameras, battery or software will last for the same period.

How to read Samsung’s mechanism ratings
The support-page ratings are useful when comparing the company’s own models because they identify the component and model family. Treat “average” as a design target or expected statistical performance, not a guaranteed minimum for every unit. Manufacturing variation, force applied by the user and contamination can move an individual phone away from that average.
What the Which? test adds
The independent machine test suggests that most models in its sample tolerated repeated opening and closing without an early failure. Its screen-scratch finding points to a different practical weakness: the flexible inner material is softer than hardened cover glass. A hinge can remain functional while the inner screen accumulates marks or suffers impact damage.
Why the TechRadar comparison is still useful
The manual comparison demonstrates why online fold counts can disagree. People do not apply identical speed, force or alignment, and a single device cannot represent a production run. Use such results to understand test variability, not to declare one manufacturer more reliable than another.

Why a fold count is not a whole-phone lifespan
Different parts fail in different ways
The hinge may loosen, become stiff or stop opening flat while the display still works. Conversely, a display can develop dead pixels, touch faults or crease damage while the hinge feels normal. Flex cables, magnets, seals, batteries and outer screens have their own failure mechanisms. A cycle test normally isolates one part and therefore cannot summarize all of them.

Automated rigs can hold temperature, speed, angle and force more consistently than a person. The Fold7 panel test, for example, was conducted at 25°C. Real phones encounter pockets, bags, hot cars, cold weather, uneven force, partial openings and occasional impacts. Those conditions may add stresses that a repeated-cycle machine does not reproduce.
Sample size changes confidence
A result from one manually folded handset says little about production-wide reliability. A larger standardized sample provides more useful evidence, but even that is not a warranty. Ask how many units were tested, whether they were opened continuously or intermittently, and what counted as failure.

Debris and impacts are separate risks
Dust, sand and other particles can interfere with hinge movement or reach vulnerable areas. A drop can damage the frame or panel without using up a large number of cycles. Samsung’s guidance specifically says to keep the hinge free of dust or debris and to avoid excessive force.
The inner screen deserves its own durability check
Flexible cover materials trade some scratch resistance for the ability to bend. The Which? comparison puts that trade-off into practical terms: its average foldable-screen score was far below the score typical of a glass phone screen. Do not treat a high hinge rating as permission to carry the phone unprotected with keys, grit or hard objects.
Common screen risks
- Fine scratches from grit trapped between the folded halves.
- Pressure marks or pixel damage after a drop or sharp impact.
- Touch problems caused by damage to the flexible layers or their connections.
- Debris entering a gap and creating pressure as the phone closes.
Manufacturers may recommend a particular protective film or accessory. Follow the exact model’s instructions and do not peel off a bonded inner protector unless the manufacturer or an authorized service provider says it is safe. A case may reduce some impact exposure, but the evidence here does not establish that any case protects a hinge to a measured degree.

How to compare foldable-phone durability claims
When two models advertise different fold counts, compare the claims across the same dimensions rather than choosing the larger number.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which component was tested? | A hinge mechanism, display panel and complete phone are different subjects. |
| What was the method? | Automated cycling, manual folding, drop testing, dust exposure and scratch testing measure different damage modes. |
| What were the conditions? | Temperature, speed, force, angle and whether the device was continuously cycled affect the result. |
| How many samples were used? | A single unit illustrates one outcome; a larger sample gives stronger evidence about variation. |
| What counted as failure? | A stiff hinge, cosmetic crease, dead pixels, loss of touch, incomplete opening and total shutdown are not equivalent thresholds. |
| What support is available? | Local repair access, parts supply, warranty exclusions and accidental-damage terms can matter more than a headline cycle count after a failure. |
How to handle a foldable phone to reduce avoidable wear
- Open and close it without forcing the halves. Stop if movement feels gritty, catches or requires unusual pressure.
- Keep the hinge area clean. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions; do not push tools or liquids into the hinge.
- Keep grit away from the inner display. Check pockets, bags and surfaces before folding the phone.
- Do not carry hard objects against the inner screen. Keys and abrasive particles can scratch flexible cover material.
- Use the model’s recommended accessories. Treat a case or film as handling protection, not as proof of hinge reinforcement.
- Protect the phone from drops and crushing pressure. A single impact can cause damage that thousands of normal folds would not.
- Follow the exact model’s service guidance. Warranty and repair procedures differ by country and device generation.
Warning signs that need attention
Arrange an authorized inspection if the phone no longer opens to its normal angle, develops grinding or clicking, shows a rapidly changing crease, loses touch response, displays lines or dead pixels, or will not close evenly. Do not repeatedly force the hinge to “work through” resistance. Back up important data while the phone is still usable, photograph the condition and record when the symptom began. Those details help a service center distinguish debris, impact damage and component failure.
How to use the years-per-fold projection responsibly
Converting cycles into years is simple arithmetic, not a field-life measurement. Dividing a mechanism rating by an assumed number of daily folds can show how quickly a heavy user might consume the rated cycles. It cannot account for drops, contamination, temperature changes, defects, battery aging or repairs. The manufacturer’s “more than five years” example for roughly 100 daily folds should therefore be read as a usage-rate translation of its mechanism rating, not as a promise that the whole phone will remain reliable for that period.

The same caution applies to Samsung Display’s longer translations for its panel test. They describe how many daily folding actions fit into the tested count; they are not observations of phones owned by people for those calendar periods.
What this means for a buying decision
If hinge longevity is your priority
- Prefer a model with a clearly identified, model-specific mechanism or panel test.
- Check whether the claim came from the manufacturer, an independent laboratory or a small manual experiment.
- Look for information about debris management and handling, not just a large fold number.
- Confirm repair availability and warranty conditions where you live before purchase.
If you are choosing between generations
A newer hinge may represent genuine engineering progress, especially when independent testing and component-level details support the claim. However, do not assume that every newer generation improves every durability dimension. A revised hinge can coexist with the same scratch-prone inner material, and a stronger panel does not guarantee better resistance to drops or water.
The practical verdict
Foldable phones with improved hinges often perform better in controlled repeated-fold tests, and recent evidence includes strong results for both hinges and panels. That is encouraging, but it is not a whole-phone lifespan guarantee. The sensible comparison is component by component: identify what was tested, inspect the conditions and sample size, consider the flexible screen separately, and weigh local repair support. Careful handling and debris avoidance remain as important as the headline cycle count.
