Foldable phones are designed and tested to open and close repeatedly, but a published fold count is a model- and test-specific result—not a promise that every phone will last a set number of years. Everyday durability also depends on the flexible inner display, exposure to grit or pressure, and how the phone is handled. The available figures are manufacturer-reported tests, not neutral comparisons of real-world failure rates across brands.
How long do foldable phone hinges last?
There is no single lifespan figure that applies to all foldable phones. Samsung Gulf says the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 are engineered for an average of 200,000 folding cycles. Samsung equates that figure with more than five years at around 100 folds per day, but it is engineering guidance, not a guaranteed service life for an individual phone. A separate Samsung Display announcement says a foldable OLED panel used in the Galaxy Z Fold7 remained fully functional after a 500,000-fold test. Samsung Display says Bureau Veritas conducted the test over 13 days at 25°C (77°F). That is a panel test, not a 500,000-cycle whole-phone test, and it is not directly comparable with the Fold6 and Flip6 figure. Samsung Display’s 2025 panel test announcement describes the result.

Automated folding tests measure repeated movement under controlled conditions. They do not, by themselves, predict how a particular device will fare after drops, grit exposure, impact, pressure, or years of varied use. The cited sources do not establish a neutral, cross-brand field-failure rate.
Do foldable phone screens break easily?
The flexible inner display is not the same as a conventional rigid outer screen. Samsung warns Fold3 and Flip3 owners not to press hard on the inner screen or use sharp objects near the fold. Keys, coins, or cards trapped between the display surfaces when the phone closes can also put pressure on the screen. Samsung’s Fold3 and Flip3 durability guidance is specific to those models; follow the current instructions for the exact phone you own.

Samsung’s guidance for those models also says to keep the factory inner-display film in place. If it lifts or detaches, Samsung directs users to authorized service rather than removing or replacing it themselves. Film and repair instructions can vary by model, so check the manufacturer’s current support page before acting.

Is the crease on a foldable phone normal?
A visible fold line can be part of the flexible display’s construction. Samsung says subtle curves may be visible in direct light on the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 and do not, by themselves, indicate a defect. Samsung also says slight clicking or snagging sensations can sometimes come from friction between hinge parts and the flexibility of components. Samsung’s Fold5 and Flip5 hinge FAQ describes those observations; they are general guidance, not a diagnosis of a specific device.

If the hinge’s movement changes suddenly, the screen stops functioning properly, or there is visible damage, use the support and service guidance for that model instead of assuming the symptom is normal.
Can dust or sand damage a foldable phone hinge?
Small particles are a separate concern from water. Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 are not dust-resistant and advises keeping them away from sand and small particles, despite those models having an IPX8 water-resistance rating. IPX8 does not establish dust resistance. This is older, model-specific information—not a rating for every foldable phone—so check the exact device’s published water and dust ratings before exposing it to either.

For those Fold3 and Flip3 models, Samsung’s care guidance is to keep the hinge and screen away from sand and grit. A protective accessory may be useful, but Samsung’s recommendation to consider foldable-specific accessories is not a claim that a case prevents hinge or inner-display failure; confirm that any case fits the exact model.

- Test subject: Does the figure refer to a complete phone, a hinge, or a display panel?
- Test conditions and attribution: Who reported or verified the result, and under what conditions?
- Display care: What does the manufacturer say about the inner-screen film, pressure, and repair?
- Particle and water protection: Read the separate dust and water ratings rather than treating one as evidence of the other.
- Ownership support: Check warranty terms, authorized repair options, and service costs for your region.
The figures cited here come chiefly from Samsung materials. Bureau Veritas is named in connection with Samsung’s panel test and Fold3/Flip3 test, but these sources do not provide a neutral side-by-side ownership failure-rate comparison or support a universal brand ranking.
