Use a sealed waterproof pouch for the phone you need to reach, and keep your power bank and cable in a separate dry bag inside your pack. In sustained rain or other seriously wet conditions, add a second protective layer: a dry-bag closure can leak, so a single bag is not a guarantee. Keep both devices dry while handling or charging them, and follow the instructions for your exact models.
Choose protection for how each device is carried
Your phone and power bank have different jobs on the trail. The phone may need to stay accessible for navigation or communication; the power bank can usually remain packed until needed. Separate storage makes it easier to reach the phone without exposing the backup battery and cable every time.

Set up and check your protection before the trip
- Fit the phone pouch. Check that the phone fits without straining the seams or closure, then seal it fully. Test the pouch according to its maker’s instructions before relying on it outdoors.
- Pack the power bank separately. Put the bank and its cable in a small dry pouch or dry bag inside the pack. Arrange it so you can inspect and retrieve the bank without leaving it exposed in the rain.
- Add a second layer when exposure could be severe. Sea to Summit recommends double-bagging electronics; its example is an IPX8 case inside a dry bag. Treat this as layered protection, not a guarantee against every leak or immersion.
- Keep charging dry. Move out of direct rain before connecting devices, and make sure the phone and charging connection are dry. The guidance cited here does not establish that charging a power bank while it is sealed inside a pouch is safe.
Know what water-resistance claims do—and do not—tell you
Do not assume an ordinary power bank is water-resistant. Huawei’s warning applies to its listed models, while Anker’s advice applies to its own products; check the documentation for your exact bank. A phone’s water-resistance claim, if it has one, is also limited to the conditions its maker specifies. No general rating means every phone or power bank is safe in all backpacking conditions.

Product labels are not substitutes for a trip-specific storage plan. For example, Nitecore describes its SLB01 as having a separate IPX8 phone pouch and an IPX3 splashproof main compartment that can hold a power bank. What to do if a device gets wet
- Wet phone: Do not charge it while wet. Follow your phone maker’s moisture-handling guidance; Samsung also recommends protecting the phone in a waterproof zip-lock pouch when travelling in rainy weather. Samsung Support India
- Power bank exposed to liquid: Stop using it and follow the manufacturer’s service guidance. Huawei advises this for its listed models, and Anker says not to expose its power banks to liquids. Huawei Support · Anker
Plan around the likely exposure
- Rain while walking: Keep the phone in its sealed pouch and the power bank in a separate dry bag in the pack.
- Long exposure or very wet conditions: Use two layers for electronics rather than relying on a roll-top dry bag alone. Sea to Summit notes that dry-bag closures can leak and recommends double-bagging electronics. Sea to Summit Europe Support
- Any situation involving immersion: Do not assume the setup or an IPX label makes the devices safe; follow the exact products’ stated limits and instructions.
