They are aircraft designed for Advanced Air Mobility: electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles (eVTOLs) that can rise like helicopters, accelerate into wing-borne flight, and land vertically at a vertiport or other approved site. The technology is real, but regular passenger service still depends on aircraft certification, trained pilots, charging facilities, vertiports, weather procedures, and integration with the national airspace system.
The basic idea is a powered-lift aircraft. Rotors or propellers provide vertical thrust for takeoff and landing; once the aircraft is moving fast enough, wings provide most of the lift during cruise. Electric motors distributed around the airframe give precise control and can provide redundancy, while batteries must supply enough energy for hovering, transition, cruise, reserves, and a safe landing.

What does eVTOL mean?
eVTOL stands for electric vertical takeoff and landing. The term describes the propulsion and flight capability, not one particular shape. Some designs use rotors that tilt, some use separate lift and cruise propellers, and others combine several aerodynamic approaches.

The Federal Aviation Administration defines powered lift as an aircraft capable of vertical takeoff, vertical landing, and low-speed flight. After vertical takeoff, an aircraft in this category can fly like an airplane during cruise. That combination is the key distinction from a conventional airplane, which needs a runway, and from a helicopter, which normally relies on rotor lift throughout the flight.

Why vertical takeoff matters
A runway is a major constraint for urban travel. Vertical lift lets an aircraft operate from compact sites, subject to aviation approval, obstacle clearances, noise limits, and local land-use rules. NASA describes vertical-lift vehicles as capable of taking off and landing from many locations and hovering in place, opening missions beyond traditional helicopter operations.
How an eVTOL flies
An eVTOL flight is best understood as three connected phases. The aircraft does not use the same lift source or power setting from the moment it leaves the ground until it lands.
1. Vertical takeoff and hover
At takeoff, rotors or propellers point upward, or dedicated lift rotors push air downward. The resulting thrust balances the aircraft’s weight and allows a vertical climb. Hover is energy-intensive because the propulsion system must continuously generate nearly all the lift; the wings contribute little while the aircraft is stationary.
2. Transition to forward flight
After reaching a safe height, the vehicle accelerates. Tilting propellers, tilting rotors, or a change in thrust allocation gradually shifts the aircraft from rotor-borne flight to aerodynamic flight. Flight-control software coordinates motor speed, propeller angle, attitude, and control surfaces during this period.
Joby’s published design illustrates the concept with propellers that rotate between vertical and horizontal positions. The company states a transition speed of roughly 45–90 knots for that design. This is a manufacturer specification, not a universal eVTOL operating range.
3. Wing-borne cruise
In forward flight, the wings generate most of the lift. The propellers mainly provide forward thrust, so the aircraft does not have to spend as much power supporting its weight as it does in a hover. This is why a winged eVTOL can be more efficient over a route than a vehicle that remains in helicopter-like flight for the entire trip.

For landing, the sequence reverses: the aircraft slows, propulsion shifts back toward vertical thrust, the vehicle descends under rotor control, and it settles onto a marked landing area.

Why eVTOLs use many small motors
Distributed electric propulsion places several motors and propellers around the airframe instead of relying on one large engine and rotor. Electric motors are compact, independently controllable, and able to change thrust quickly. A flight computer can vary each motor’s output to control roll, pitch, yaw, and vertical movement.
One published Joby configuration lists six electric motors, six propellers, four battery packs, and a triple-redundant flight computer. Those figures describe that aircraft, not a requirement for every eVTOL. Other designs may use different numbers, rotor arrangements, or separate systems for lift and cruise.
Redundancy and failure tolerance
Multiple motors can help an aircraft continue controlled flight after a single component fault, provided the remaining system has enough performance and the failure is detected and managed. Redundancy must cover more than motors: power distribution, flight computers, sensors, communications, actuators, and battery modules all need appropriate failure strategies. Certification authorities evaluate the complete aircraft rather than accepting a motor count as proof of safety.
Batteries set the engineering limits
Hover demands high power, and an eVTOL must carry energy for every phase of the mission: takeoff, climb, transition, cruise, approach, landing, and legally required reserves. The battery must also deliver that power repeatedly without overheating or losing unacceptable capacity.

Energy determines how long the aircraft can operate. Power determines whether it can produce the thrust needed at a particular instant, especially during hover, transition, or an emergency climb. A battery system can have enough total energy for a route yet still require careful design to meet the peak-power demand of vertical flight.

Thermal management
High current creates heat in battery cells, cables, inverters, and motors. Cooling systems must keep components within safe temperature limits during hot-weather departures, repeated flights, and fast charging. NASA identifies thermal management, power quality, motor design, electric-propulsion reliability, and system failure modes as active research areas.
Reserves and a safe landing
Operators cannot plan to use every available watt-hour. A practical mission profile includes energy for diversions, delays, weather-related routing changes, and a controlled landing after a fault. The amount of reserve depends on the certified aircraft, route, regulations, and operating conditions; there is no single reserve figure that applies to all eVTOLs.
How eVTOL safety is built
Safety comes from aircraft-level certification, redundant systems, qualified pilots, maintenance, operating procedures, and controlled infrastructure. A quiet electric motor does not remove the hazards of flight, battery energy, weather, or air-traffic conflicts.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCertification and pilot qualifications
FAA Special Federal Aviation Regulation Part 194 establishes an interim powered-lift framework. Pilots must hold an appropriate private, commercial, or airline-transport certificate with a powered-lift type rating, plus applicable instrument or instructor ratings. The FAA says the interim rule will remain in place for 10 years while operational data and rulemaking experience accumulate.
The type rating matters because powered-lift aircraft combine airplane and rotorcraft behaviors. Training must cover vertical operations, transition, abnormal propulsion indications, energy management, instrument procedures, and the aircraft’s specific control system. A pilot qualified on one model is not automatically qualified on every powered-lift design.
Research beyond propulsion
NASA’s Revolutionary Vertical Lift Technology program studies crashworthiness, occupant protection, icing, flight dynamics, passenger comfort, and validated acoustic and performance models. These areas affect whether an aircraft can operate safely and acceptably in the varied conditions of a real transport network.

Weather and operational constraints
Wind gusts, thunderstorms, icing, visibility, temperature, and turbulence can change whether a flight is permitted. A vehicle that can hover in calm air still needs procedures for degraded conditions. Vertiport operators and air-traffic services must coordinate closures, diversions, and separation from other aircraft.
How noisy are eVTOLs?
Noise is a community-acceptance issue even when an aircraft produces no exhaust at the point of operation. Rotor tip speed, blade loading, flight path, number of vehicles, and the timing of departures all affect the sound heard on the ground.
NASA reports that its combined operations, rotor and vehicle design, and human-factors work produced a 50-percent reduction in noise-footprint area for commonly used commercial VTOL vehicles. That result describes NASA’s work and the vehicles studied; it is not a guarantee for every eVTOL.
Joby reports 45 dBA in cruise for its aircraft. That is a company-reported specification for that design, not an industry-wide noise level.

Vertiports and vertistops
FAA guidance anticipates a mix of existing airports and heliports modified for powered-lift operations, plus new vertiports and smaller vertistops. A vertiport supports takeoff, landing, taxiing, parking, and storage. Its design must account for approach and departure paths, obstacle protection, passenger movement, emergency access, and aircraft ground handling.
Charging facilities
Charging stations are part of the infrastructure plan. A site needs electrical capacity, compatible charging equipment, fire protection, thermal monitoring, and procedures for an aircraft arriving with a depleted or damaged battery. Fast turnaround goals must be balanced against battery temperature, grid capacity, and safe charging limits.

Airspace integration
Every route still operates inside the National Airspace System. FAA guidance addresses vertiport design, construction notices, charging stations, and review of effects on the airspace. A network cannot scale simply by adding landing pads; authorities must assess traffic flows, communication, surveillance, emergency procedures, and interaction with helicopters, airplanes, drones, and weather systems.
eVTOLs compared with other transport
| Comparison | Where eVTOL differs | What the difference means |
|---|---|---|
| Helicopter versus eVTOL | Conventional helicopters generally use combustion propulsion and a main rotor; eVTOLs use electric motors and distributed propellers or rotors. | Electric propulsion can simplify mechanical power transmission and provide multiple independently controlled thrust sources, while batteries and charging replace onboard liquid fuel. Both require approved landing sites, trained pilots, maintenance, and weather procedures. |
| Airplane versus eVTOL | An airplane normally needs a runway and uses wing lift throughout flight; an eVTOL can lift vertically but must manage a rotor-to-wing transition. | eVTOLs can serve compact sites, but transition control and hover energy demand add engineering complexity. Airplanes remain highly efficient in sustained forward cruise. |
| Car versus eVTOL | A car follows roads in two dimensions; an eVTOL follows three-dimensional routes under aviation rules. | Flying can bypass road congestion, but passengers face weather exposure, pilot or automation requirements, vertiport access, security, charging, and airspace constraints. |
Are flying cars real yet?
eVTOL aircraft are real engineering projects and powered-lift rules now provide a defined FAA operating and pilot-training pathway. However, most serious projects are aircraft for air-taxi, cargo, medical, or other Advanced Air Mobility missions, not roadable personal cars that can be driven after landing.
Before routine commercial service can expand, each design needs certification and production approval, pilots need training, vertiports need to be built and approved, charging and maintenance systems need to work reliably, and routes need airspace and community approvals. The evidence available does not establish one universal launch date, ticket price, range, or recharge time for the entire industry.
What a passenger flight would involve
- Arrival at an approved site: The passenger reaches a vertiport or vertistop rather than a roadside parking space.
- Aircraft and weather checks: Operators verify battery condition, aircraft status, route, wind, visibility, icing risk, and available alternates.
- Vertical departure: Lift propellers or rotors raise the aircraft and establish a safe climb.
- Transition: Propulsion and control surfaces shift toward forward flight while the flight computer manages attitude and thrust.
- Cruise: Wings carry most of the lift, reducing the power needed compared with hover.
- Approach and landing: The aircraft slows, returns to vertical-lift control, descends to the designated landing area, and connects to ground systems for inspection and charging.
The exact passenger process, level of pilot involvement, boarding rules, and turnaround time will depend on the certified aircraft and operator. They should not be inferred from a concept illustration or a manufacturer’s headline specification.
What determines whether the technology scales?
- Certification: Regulators must verify structure, propulsion, software, batteries, flight controls, emergency behavior, and production quality.
- Energy supply: Batteries must deliver peak hover power, mission energy, reserves, and repeatable cycles without unsafe thermal conditions.
- Infrastructure: Vertiports, vertistops, charging, maintenance, passenger facilities, and emergency services must be available where routes are planned.
- Airspace capacity: Traffic management must safely combine powered-lift aircraft with existing aviation.
- Community acceptance: Noise, visual impact, operating hours, and local land use influence where facilities can be built.
- Weather reliability: Operators need clear limits and diversion plans for wind, storms, icing, visibility, and temperature.
- Economics: Aircraft utilization, pilot staffing, charging costs, maintenance, and facility access determine whether a route can operate sustainably.
In short, an eVTOL works by combining vertical electric thrust with airplane-style wing-borne cruise. The motors, batteries, flight computers, and transition controls make that combination possible; certification, infrastructure, weather procedures, and airspace coordination determine where people can actually use it.
