What an FFXIV maintenance notice means
Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) maintenance is a planned interruption of one or more online services. The most consequential notices are labeled for all Worlds. During that window, the game is unavailable, so players cannot log in, remain connected or enter duties. The Lodestone notice is the authoritative place to confirm the schedule and to see when Square Enix posts completion.

An all-world notice identifies what is affected, states a start time and a scheduled end time, and warns that the completion time is subject to change. Treat the scheduled end as the earliest expected return, not as a promise that the login servers will be open at that minute. The emergency-maintenance wording is explicit: “Completion time is subject to change. (This maintenance will not end before the scheduled ending time.)”

Not every notice means the game worlds are offline. Some notices concern The Lodestone website itself. In that case, users cannot log in to The Lodestone while its News and Topics pages remain viewable. Reading the affected-service line prevents you from mistaking a website outage for a game outage.

Routine maintenance versus emergency maintenance
The distinction is the reason for the work, not a different set of login rules. Both can make all Worlds unavailable and both can affect related services.

Patch numbers in notices identify the work being deployed, not a universal duration. A 7.51 or 7.56 label is an example of the hotfix or patch named in an official notice; it does not establish how long future maintenance will take.
Why the game goes offline
Patch and hotfix deployment
Maintenance provides a controlled period to install game changes. Routine windows can deliver a full patch and supporting server work. Emergency windows are commonly used for hotfixes: targeted corrections that need to reach the live service quickly. Taking all Worlds offline avoids having different game rules or data versions operating at the same time.

Official routine notices can pair a patch with infrastructure maintenance. That work may involve systems behind the game rather than a visible feature, so a notice that mentions infrastructure is not evidence of a specific bug or hardware failure. It does explain why the outage can cover every World even when the patch notes appear small.

Website-only maintenance
A Lodestone-only window updates Lodestone data and systems and can accompany a patch release. During it, News and Topics remain available for viewing, but account holders cannot log in to the Lodestone. This does not, by itself, mean the game clients or Worlds are down.
What stops before the announced start time
The 30-minute cutoff is the operational detail most likely to surprise players. For an all-world maintenance window, the following services are suspended 30 minutes before the stated start:
- Data Center Travel. You cannot start or complete a travel request during the suspension.
- Home World Transfer Service. The Mog Station transfer function is unavailable.
- Character Renaming Service. Requests cannot be submitted through the Mog Station during the cutoff.
- Item-code and gift-code entry. Enter codes before the suspension if you need them processed ahead of maintenance.
Some features in the FINAL FANTASY XIV Companion app are also unavailable until maintenance ends. Notices can additionally warn that duty-recorder data recorded before maintenance may no longer replay afterward. If a replay matters to you, save any information you need rather than assuming it will remain usable after the update.
How to plan around the cutoff
- Open the current maintenance item on The Lodestone and note the exact start, scheduled end, time zone and affected service.
- Finish duties with enough margin to log out normally. Do not plan to remain in a dungeon until the listed start.
- Complete Data Center Travel and allow the character to arrive on the intended data center before the 30-minute suspension.
- Submit Home World Transfer or Character Renaming requests before the cutoff if those services are part of your plan.
- Enter item or gift codes before the cutoff and verify that the account accepted them.
- Save or document anything important from the Companion app or duty recorder before the window.
The cutoff is measured relative to the announced all-world start, not relative to when you personally see a disconnect. A late login attempt cannot recover the 30 minutes that have already elapsed.

How to read the time window correctly
Maintenance notices show a start and a scheduled ending time. Convert those times to your own time zone carefully, especially when daylight-saving rules differ between the notice’s region and your location. Record the date as well as the clock time; an overnight window can cross midnight locally.
Do not infer a standard two-hour, four-hour or other “normal” duration. No authoritative universal average is published. Length varies with the patch, hotfix, infrastructure tasks and any incident discovered during deployment. Community countdowns can be useful reminders, but only the official notice and its completion update establish the service status.
Earliest-return rule
When a notice says maintenance will not end before the scheduled ending time, logging in early is not an option. If work finishes later than planned, the Worlds remain unavailable until the completion update. Repeated launcher attempts during the window do not shorten it and can create misleading local error messages.

What you can and cannot do during an all-world outage
- You cannot launch into an online World or stay connected to a World that has been taken offline.
- You cannot use Data Center Travel during the 30-minute pre-maintenance suspension or while maintenance is active.
- You cannot use the listed Mog Station transfer, renaming or code-entry functions during their suspension.
- Some Companion app functions remain unavailable until the official maintenance completion.
- You may still be able to read public News and Topics if the Lodestone itself is not the service under maintenance.
The exact list can vary by notice. Read the affected-services and additional-information sections rather than assuming that every web or app feature follows the game World’s status.

What to do when the scheduled end has passed
Wait for a completion message before treating a missed login as a local problem. A scheduled end is the earliest expected return; an extension is normal within the terms of the notice.
- Refresh the same Lodestone maintenance item and look for an update stating that work is complete or giving a revised ending time.
- Check whether the notice still says all Worlds are unavailable. If it does, do not change router, DNS or launcher settings to solve a server-side outage.
- After completion is posted, close and reopen the official client, then sign in again. A client that was left open during maintenance can retain a stale session.
- If the Worlds are marked available but you still cannot connect, check your platform’s network status and the client error message, then troubleshoot your local connection.
- For a Lodestone-only outage, test the game separately; website login trouble does not prove that the Worlds are offline.
If a revised end time is posted, use the revised time as the new earliest return. Do not rely on an old social-media post or a cached launcher banner when the Lodestone notice has changed.

“Why is FFXIV down when I was already logged in?”
An all-world window disconnects active sessions because the Worlds themselves are being serviced. The fact that your character was online before the start does not grant an exception. Log out safely before the window when possible, and avoid starting a duty that would run into the announced time.

“Can I use Data Center Travel during maintenance?”
No. Data Center Travel is suspended 30 minutes before all-world maintenance begins and stays unavailable until maintenance ends. Complete the travel earlier and confirm that your character is on the desired data center.
“Is emergency maintenance always shorter?”
There is no authoritative rule that it is. Emergency notices identify urgent hotfix work, but the duration still depends on the change and on verification. Use the stated window and completion updates; do not assign a shorter duration merely because the notice says “emergency.”

“The Lodestone is unavailable. Is the game down too?”
Not necessarily. A Lodestone-only notice can block Lodestone login while leaving News and Topics viewable. Check whether the notice names all Worlds or only The Lodestone before diagnosing a game-client failure.
“Why did my duty recorder replay stop working afterward?”
Official maintenance notices warn that duty-recorder data recorded before maintenance may no longer replay. Treat that warning as a compatibility limitation of the update, not as proof that your console, PC or network is damaged.
A practical maintenance checklist
- Read the current Lodestone notice, including the affected-service line and any revised update.
- Convert the start and scheduled end to your local date and time.
- Finish duties and log out before the 30-minute pre-maintenance cutoff becomes critical.
- Complete Data Center Travel, Home World Transfer, character renaming and code entry before their suspension.
- Save information you need from Companion features and duty recordings.
- Plan for the scheduled end to move later; do not schedule a time-sensitive activity immediately afterward.
- After completion is posted, restart the official client before investigating local connectivity.
Following this sequence separates a planned service window from an actual account or network problem. It also avoids losing access to the services that shut down before the Worlds do.
