A fanless PC works by conducting heat from its processor into a heatsink or metal chassis, then releasing that heat into the room through natural convection and radiation. It removes the fan—not the need to move heat. Whether a particular computer can stay cool depends on the full thermal path, the case, the workload, and the surrounding conditions.
How does a fanless PC work?
Heat must travel through a complete path: from the component, across a thermal interface, into a cooling module or heatsink, across a larger metal surface, and finally into the surrounding air. A fanless design relies primarily on conduction inside the computer and natural heat transfer from the exterior to the room.

Heat leaves the processor
A thermal interface couples the processor to a cooling module or heatsink. In some systems, a thermal module or copper heatpipes carry heat away from the CPU to the enclosure. The exact arrangement varies by design.

Heat spreads across a larger surface
The heatsink or chassis spreads heat over more metal. Fins increase the surface area exposed to air. Some fanless computers use their enclosure as the heatsink; others use a dedicated cooler that transfers heat into the case. OnLogic describes a computer’s external panels as a broad heatsink surface, while Akasa describes the chassis itself serving as the heatsink.

Heat leaves the case
Air next to a warm surface heats up, becomes buoyant, and rises; cooler air can replace it. The warm exterior also transfers heat by radiation. Akasa’s explanation of its fanless designs describes heat spreading into the aluminium chassis before leaving through external fins by natural convection. This is a manufacturer explanation, not an independent performance test.
Natural convection is less forceful than fan-driven airflow, so the exposed surface, its orientation, the space around it, and room temperature all affect how effectively the system sheds heat.

What determines how much heat a fanless PC can handle?
Processor power and workload
A processor that sustains high heat output for a long time is harder to cool passively than one with lighter or intermittent work. Noctua says its NH-P1 passive CPU cooler is better suited to mixed, non-continuous loads that leave the heatsink time to cool; prolonged full-load work is less suitable. That is guidance for this specific cooler, not a universal wattage rule for all fanless PCs.

Case design, orientation, and clearance
Natural convection works best when warmed air can rise away from the case and cooler air can reach the surfaces below it. For the NH-P1, Noctua recommends a clear bottom-to-top path, air entering from below and leaving at the top, and space above the cooler. Compact enclosures, sound-insulating panels, blocked vents, or poor orientation can restrict that path. Follow the case maker’s mounting guidance and keep vents and fins unobstructed.

Room temperature
A warmer room leaves less temperature difference between the PC’s surface and the surrounding air, reducing the system’s ability to release heat. Noctua states that its NH-P1 compatibility recommendations assume a 22°C ambient temperature and that performance will be worse at higher ambient temperatures. This is a condition for that manufacturer’s recommendations, not a general operating limit.
Other components and airflow needs
The CPU cooler is only part of the thermal picture. A discrete GPU adds heat and may obstruct natural convection. Motherboard voltage regulator modules (VRMs) can also overheat if they lack suitable heatsinks or airflow. Consider the GPU’s placement, VRM cooling, and the power supply’s design as part of the complete build.

Model-specific thermal ratings
Case ratings are specific to the product and conditions. Akasa’s 2026 article gives examples of 35W for its compact Mini-ITX models and 65W for the Pascal MX; Akasa also notes that sustained processor power, ambient temperature, case orientation, and airflow past the fins affect the practical ceiling. These vendor-stated examples are not limits that apply to fanless PCs generally. Check the chosen case or computer’s own specifications and configuration guidance.

| Factor | Fully passive | Semi-passive |
|---|---|---|
| Cooling airflow | Relies on heatsink or chassis geometry and natural convection. | An optional fan can provide additional airflow when needed. |
| Cooling headroom | More dependent on surface area, case design, orientation, and ambient conditions. | A fan can improve performance headroom. |
| Workload fit | The cited NH-P1 guidance favors mixed, non-continuous loads over prolonged full-load work. | May be a better fit when additional cooling is needed, subject to component and cooler compatibility. |
| Noise | No cooling-fan noise; other system components can still make sound. | The fan can make noise when operating; other system components can also make sound. |
| Compatibility checks | Confirm CPU and socket support, case convection, cooler orientation, VRM cooling, and GPU placement. | Check the same system fit and confirm the fan can be installed and used as intended. |
What to check when choosing or building a fanless PC
- Processor and workload: Check the manufacturer’s CPU compatibility guidance and consider whether the system will run sustained heavy loads.
- Case or cooler fit: Confirm socket and motherboard support, physical clearance, and any product-specific thermal rating.
- Air path and orientation: Ensure the installed case has the clearance and orientation its cooling design requires.
- Whole-system heat: Account for GPU heat, VRM heatsinks, and power-supply design—not only CPU cooling.
- Operating conditions: Consider expected room temperature and follow the maker’s conditions for installation and use.
- Dust protection: Reduced fan-driven dust intake is not the same as a dust-tight enclosure. If ingress protection matters, check the specific product’s rating.
The Noctua NH-P1 illustrates a purpose-designed passive CPU cooler: Noctua specifies six heatpipes and thick, widely spaced fins intended to support natural convection, and directs buyers to check CPU compatibility. Its manufacturer lists NT-H2 thermal compound with the cooler; thermal compound supports the interface between components but is not a cooling solution by itself. A fanless case is a different approach: in some designs, heat transfers into a finned aluminium enclosure. Check the particular case’s board or socket support, rating, mounting orientation, and stated operating conditions.
What fanless cooling does—and does not—mean
Manufacturers identify quiet operation and reduced fan-driven dust intake as benefits of fanless designs. ASUS describes its fanless NUC design as minimizing dust intake and using a metal heatsink without moving parts. But less dust does not mean the enclosure is sealed, and removing a cooling fan does not make the rest of the computer immune to failure or maintenance.
