What to Do When an AI Insurance Tool Gives Inaccurate or Conflicting Advice

Do not rely on a disputed AI answer to buy, change, cancel, or renew coverage, submit application answers, or give up on a claim. Treat it as a prompt to check the policy and insurer’s written records, save what the tool said, and ask the insurer for a written clarification. If coverage, a premium, underwriting, or a claim decision may be affected, request review by a qualified person. Complaint rights and deadlines depend on where you live and what kind of decision is involved.

First, work out what the AI answer represents

An insurance chatbot may explain general policy information without making a formal decision. A separate automated system may have been used in underwriting or claims, or the chatbot may simply be repeating information from another source. Those situations are not interchangeable: a confident answer is not proof that the insurer has approved coverage, and an inaccurate chatbot response does not by itself establish that a formal decision is wrong.

Identify who operates the tool and whether the insurer says it relied on the output. If the response concerns eligibility, price, coverage, or a claim, ask the insurer whether it was general guidance or part of a decision about your policy. The CFPB warns that financial-services chatbots can give inaccurate responses and leave customers stuck in repetitive service loops: CFPB guidance on chatbots in consumer finance.

Preserve the answer and check it against your records

Save the chatbot response as context, not as proof of coverage. Keep a screenshot or transcript, the date and time, the tool’s name, any links or policy clauses it cited, and the question you asked. Then compare the disputed statement with the documents that govern or explain your situation.

  • Your policy schedule, declarations page, and policy wording.
  • Your application or renewal answers and any endorsements or amendments.
  • Insurer emails, letters, claim records, and any denial or appeal notice.
  • Relevant dates, such as the incident date, notice date, renewal date, or deadline stated in a letter.

If the answer depends on a fact you do not know, verify that fact with the relevant source instead of guessing. The UK Financial Ombudsman Service, in its guidance on insurance misrepresentation and non-disclosure, describes looking at what questions were asked, what answers were given, and whether information was incorrect or incomplete. That is a specific dispute category, not a universal rule for every coverage disagreement: Financial Ombudsman Service: misrepresentation and non-disclosure.

Ask the insurer for a specific written answer

Use a verified phone number, secure customer portal, or mailing address from the insurer’s official website or your policy documents. State the exact AI answer that conflicts with your records, identify the relevant document or clause, and explain what clarification you need. Request a written response and correction of any inaccurate information in the insurer’s records.

If the issue could affect coverage, a premium, underwriting, or a claim, explicitly ask for a qualified human to review it. Keep copies of messages and letters, and note dates, the names of people you speak with, and any reference numbers. If the first contact only sends you back to the chatbot, ask how to reach a person or make a formal complaint.

Regulatory guidance is jurisdiction-specific. Texas Department of Insurance Bulletin B-0003-26, issued June 12, 2026 and updated July 16, 2026, says existing standards apply to AI-supported decisions and that TDI expects a person to review and agree with a consequential decision before action is taken: Texas TDI Bulletin B-0003-26. This is Texas guidance for regulated entities, not a global guarantee of a particular remedy.

If there is already a formal decision, protect the deadline

If you received a denial, cancellation, premium change, or other formal notice, follow the appeal or response instructions in that notice while you seek clarification. Do not assume an AI answer changes the policy, overturns a written decision, or pauses a deadline. If the notice is unclear, ask the insurer in writing what deadline applies and where to send an appeal, and check the regulator’s official guidance for your jurisdiction and insurance type.

When challenging the decision, explain the specific factual or contractual conflict and attach relevant records. A chatbot’s answer can help show why you contacted the insurer, but the decision and the policy documents are generally more useful evidence of what the insurer did and what terms it applied.

Escalate through the complaint route for your location

Start with the regulator or ombudsman responsible for insurance in your jurisdiction. Confirm that it handles your type of policy and complaint, what documents it requires, and any time limits; regulator powers and consumer remedies differ by location.

United Kingdom

The Financial Ombudsman Service says consumers should complain to the business first. For the misrepresentation and non-disclosure complaints covered by its guidance, referral may be possible if the firm has not sent a final response within eight weeks or its response is unsatisfactory. The service considers the evidence and applicable rules; it does not simply adopt an AI answer. Check its current process and whether your issue is within scope: How to complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Separately, UK government and Competition and Markets Authority guidance says businesses remain responsible for AI agents under consumer law and recommends human oversight, monitoring, and prompt correction of problems. This is business-facing guidance, not a universal consumer remedy: UK guidance on AI agents and consumer law.

Michigan

If an insurance dispute in Michigan remains unresolved after you contact the business, the Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) directs consumers to its hotline or online complaint process. Check its official page for current submission details and what to include: Michigan DIFS consumer complaint information. DIFS’s January 14, 2026 statement also identifies risks from AI use in financial services, including inaccurate information and transparency problems: Michigan DIFS AI statement.

Other U.S. states and countries

Use the official insurance regulator or consumer-dispute body for your location. Wisconsin’s Office of the Commissioner of Insurance, for example, has described insurer controls that take account of the decision, potential consumer harm, human involvement, transparency, and reliance on third-party AI. That guidance is specific to Wisconsin: Wisconsin OCI information on AI. Do not assume another state or country has the same standards, complaint eligibility, or deadlines.

A practical checklist before you submit a complaint

  • Save the AI response, the prompt, date, tool name, and any cited links or clauses.
  • Gather the policy wording, application answers, insurer correspondence, and formal decision or appeal notice.
  • Write down the precise conflict and the correction or review you are requesting.
  • Keep proof of when you contacted the insurer and its response, including reference numbers.
  • Follow any deadline in the formal decision while checking the regulator’s current rules.
  • Submit through the official complaint channel and include only records relevant to the dispute.
