Fan-made co-op works in one of two fundamentally different ways: a game-specific mod can add networking and synchronize players over a connection, or a local wrapper can run several game instances and arrange them as a synthetic split-screen. The first approach changes how the game simulates its world; the second orchestrates multiple copies of the original program.
That distinction determines what you need, how many players are possible, why saves can break, and which fixes are available when something goes wrong. A wrapper cannot create multiplayer by itself, and an online mod must continually compensate for single-player scripts, physics and updates.

What a “multiplayer mod” actually changes
The phrase covers two engineering patterns. Treating them as interchangeable is the source of many failed installations and unrealistic expectations.

Game-specific networking retrofits
A networking mod hooks the executable, scripting layer or both. It creates player entities, establishes a session, and sends enough state between a host and connected clients for everyone to see a coherent world. Depending on the title, that state can include positions, rotations, inventory, health, mission flags, doors, containers, enemies, physics objects and other world changes.

The usual arrangement is host-client: one player runs the authoritative session and others connect as clients. This is the same broad architecture described in Unity’s official casual co-op documentation. The host may decide which action is valid, while clients send inputs and receive updates. Some projects use peer-to-peer techniques or divide authority differently, so the mod’s own documentation is the authority for its implementation.
Multi-instance local co-op
A local wrapper does not rewrite the game’s simulation. Nucleus Co-op is a prominent example of this pattern: it launches several copies of a game, assigns a particular gamepad to each copy, connects the instances through a LAN path, an online-multiplayer emulation layer or a compatible mod, then resizes and repositions the windows to resemble split-screen.
Its README makes the limitation explicit: “Nucleus does not add multiplayer or co-op to single player games, the game needs to already have some form of online or LAN multiplayer, or another way to connect the instances, like via mods for example.” If the underlying game has no connection method at all, the wrapper has nothing to use.

How an online co-op mod is engineered
Creating players and sessions
The author first has to find stable points in the game where a session can be created and player objects can be spawned. In a fully multiplayer game these systems are designed from the beginning. In a single-player title, the mod may need to intercept menu actions, construct a host or client role, and replace assumptions that exactly one human-controlled character exists.
Every participant needs an identity that survives scene changes and respawns. The mod also has to decide which machine owns an object and how late joiners receive the current world state. A small mistake—such as assigning an item to two owners or failing to replicate a quest flag—can produce divergent worlds even when movement appears correct.

Synchronizing state without saturating the connection
Sending every variable every frame is usually wasteful. Mods commonly transmit important changes, periodic snapshots or compressed transforms, then let each client predict short-term movement between updates. The exact strategy differs by project, but the required categories are similar:
- Player state: position, orientation, movement mode, health, equipment and actions.
- World state: opened containers, destroyed objects, switches, doors, dropped items and other persistent changes.
- Mission state: objectives, triggers, dialogue choices and progression flags.
- Actors and physics: enemy behavior, damage events, projectiles and objects affected by forces.
Latency makes these decisions visible. A client may see an enemy hit before the host confirms it, or observe another player snap back when the authoritative update arrives. Good projects reconcile those differences; no retrofit can remove the physical delay between computers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWorking around single-player scripts and physics
Single-player code often stores important values in global variables, assumes a single camera, pauses the world when a menu opens, or runs quest scripts only on the local machine. A co-op mod must identify and override those assumptions. It may need to prevent one player’s inventory menu from pausing everyone, ensure that a cutscene does not trap remote players, and make scripted doors or conversations resolve consistently.
Physics is especially difficult. Two machines integrating the same collision or ragdoll event can reach slightly different results. The mod therefore has to choose an authority, send corrections, and handle objects that were never designed to exist simultaneously for multiple humans. These are reasons a mod can support ordinary exploration yet fail during a particular boss, vehicle sequence or scripted transition.
Why patches break working mods
Game updates can change executable code, memory offsets, symbol names, scripts, bundled libraries or dependency versions. A loader hook that matched one build may no longer find its target after a hotfix. Even a cosmetic patch can alter timing enough to expose a synchronization bug.

Support is therefore version-specific. Before installing, identify the exact game build and read the mod’s release notes, dependency list and issue activity. Do not assume that a project supporting the current console release also supports the current PC build, or that an older save is safe after the mod changes its serialization format.

Several complete game processes
A multi-instance tool starts one process per local player. Each process renders its own view, receives its own input and consumes its own memory. The wrapper then tiles or resizes those windows so the players can see them at once. This is different from a true split-screen mode, where one process renders multiple cameras and shares a simulation.
Because the copies are independent, the game still needs a way for them to connect. That may be built-in LAN support, an online mode that accepts the instances, or a separate co-op mod that supplies the missing link. The wrapper supplies orchestration, not the networking rules.
Inputs and display layout
Each instance must receive an unambiguous input device. A practical arrangement is one wired USB game controller per player, with the wrapper assigning controller one to instance one, controller two to instance two and so on. Keyboard and mouse sharing is more complicated because several processes may read the same device; use a documented per-instance mapping when the handler supports it.
The tool can move and resize windows, but a four-player layout still requires a display large enough to keep text readable. Borderless-window settings, per-instance resolution and focus behavior are handler-specific. Test the arrangement before inviting other players, because changing focus or closing one process can leave the remaining copies in an unexpected state.

Hardware cost of running copies
Every process loads game data and performs its own rendering, AI and physics work. CPU, GPU and memory usage therefore rise with each additional instance. The exact requirement depends on the game and resolution; no universal player-count or performance figure is established in the project documentation. If frame time becomes unstable, lower each instance’s resolution and graphics quality first, then close background applications and check memory pressure.
Online networking versus local multi-instance play
| Decision factor | Game-specific online mod | Local multi-instance wrapper |
|---|---|---|
| How multiplayer is supplied | Mod adds session, player entities and state synchronization to the game. | Wrapper launches several copies; the game or another mod must provide LAN, online or emulated connectivity. |
| Player count | Defined by the mod’s implementation and tested scenarios; not stated universally. | Limited by the game’s connection method, handler support and the computer’s ability to run that many copies; not stated universally. |
| Supported versions and platforms | Exact executable build, platform and loader combination matter. | Exact game build plus a compatible wrapper handler, connection method and platform matter. |
| Dependencies and setup | Usually requires a loader, the co-op mod and listed libraries or configuration files. | Requires the wrapper, a per-game handler, input devices and an underlying multiplayer path or mod. |
| Input handling | Each remote player uses their own computer; local keyboard or controller rules are game-specific. | One controller or mapped input set is needed per local instance. |
| CPU, GPU and memory overhead | Additional networking and replicated simulation, generally one game process per participant. | Several full game processes plus window management; local hardware load can be substantial. |
| Stability and saves | Can fail through desynchronization, host migration limits, script conflicts or incompatible saves. | Can fail through handler errors, focus and input conflicts, process crashes or mismatched local saves. |
| Updates and maintenance | Executable patches can invalidate hooks and require a mod update. | Game patches can break handlers or the connection mod; wrapper and handler activity both matter. |
Requirements to check before installing
- Exact build: Record the game’s version number, edition and platform. Disable automatic updates temporarily if the mod requires an older build and the project documents that workaround.
- Dependencies: Read the mod’s release instructions for its loader, runtime libraries, configuration files and required order of installation.
- Connection method: Determine whether players connect directly, through a host, over LAN, through online emulation or through a second mod.
- Input hardware: For local play, have one tested controller per instance and enough USB ports or a reliable hub.
- Storage and saves: Back up save files and configuration folders. Keep an untouched installation or a separate game profile so you can reproduce an unmodded launch.
- Terms and anti-cheat: Check the publisher’s rules before connecting a modified client to any official service. Never assume a mod is permitted in an anti-cheat-protected environment.
Step-by-step: setting up an online co-op mod
- Verify compatibility. Compare your exact game build and platform with the mod’s supported versions. Read known-issues and dependency sections, not only the download description.
- Back up first. Copy saves, graphics settings and configuration files to a separate folder. Create a test profile so a failed synchronization experiment cannot overwrite a valuable campaign.
- Install the loader and dependencies. Follow the project’s documented directory and load order exactly. Launch the unmodded game once afterward to confirm the base installation still works.
- Install the co-op files. Use the release’s stated folder structure and configuration format. Do not combine files from different releases unless the maintainer says they are compatible.
- Choose a host and test locally. The host should start a fresh test save, create the session through the mod’s documented menu or command, and confirm that the world loads before inviting clients.
- Connect one client at a time. Add players incrementally. Check movement, inventory, damage, doors and a mission trigger after each connection; this isolates the first failing component.
- Record a known-good setup. Note the game build, mod version, loader version, configuration changes and save location. This makes rollback possible when a later update changes behavior.
Step-by-step: setting up a local multi-instance session
- Confirm the connection prerequisite. Verify that the game has LAN or online connectivity, or install the compatible co-op mod that provides it. A wrapper alone cannot create a missing multiplayer protocol.
- Install the wrapper and the game handler. Use the handler that matches the game build. Read its notes for launch options, required files and whether an alternate executable is needed.
- Connect and test controllers. Plug in one controller per player before launching. Confirm that the operating system and handler identify each device separately; label ports if players will reconnect often.
- Choose the number of instances. Start with two. Launching the maximum number immediately makes it difficult to tell whether a crash is caused by the handler, the connection or resource exhaustion.
- Assign inputs and windows. Map each controller to its corresponding process, then let the tool resize and position the windows. Check that every player can move without stealing another instance’s focus.
- Establish the game connection. Use the game’s documented LAN, online or mod-provided join flow. Verify that all copies show the same session before loading an important save.
- Stress-test before a campaign. Enter a small test area, trigger a door or objective, pause and resume, and close one instance normally. If those actions remain synchronized, copy the configuration for the real session.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The client cannot join
Recheck the game build, loader and dependency versions on every machine. Confirm that the host is using the connection method required by the mod, that local firewalls permit the game process, and that both players are launching the same release. A client running a different script or asset set may be rejected even when the visible game version looks similar.
Players desynchronize or objectives differ
Stop before saving over the campaign. Capture the exact location, quest step and actions that caused divergence, then reproduce them in a fresh test save. Script-heavy scenes, physics objects and simultaneous inventory changes are useful clues for a maintainer. Restarting the host can clear a transient state, but it cannot repair a permanently divergent save.
The game crashes after an update
Return to the documented supported build or wait for a compatible mod release. Remove newly added files only after backing up the modded directory, and confirm that the unmodded game launches. Mixing an old loader with a new executable, or an old handler with a new game build, is a common cause of immediate crashes.
Controllers control the wrong window
Close every instance, reconnect controllers in a known order and assign them again in the handler. Disable other virtual controllers or remapping layers temporarily. If keyboard input is shared, use the handler’s per-instance mapping rather than relying on whichever window currently has focus.

Performance collapses with more players
Watch CPU, GPU and memory usage while adding instances one at a time. Lower resolution and demanding effects in every copy, use a simpler window layout, and close recording or browser applications. If memory is exhausted, fewer local instances are the practical limit regardless of what the connection protocol permits.
Saving, updates and online safety
Co-op saves can contain data that the unmodded game never expected, such as additional player records or altered mission flags. Keep separate save directories for modded and unmodded play, and make a dated backup before every major mod or game update. Do not load a co-op save into the unmodded game unless the project explicitly says that conversion is safe.
Read the maintainer’s release notes after each game patch. Look for updated loaders, changed dependencies, migration instructions and reports from other users on the same build. Recent issue activity and a clearly documented supported-version list are stronger signals than an old download that happens to launch.

Publisher terms and anti-cheat systems can change independently of the mod. What to expect from a well-supported project
A dependable co-op mod or handler should identify supported game versions, list dependencies, explain host and client roles, document installation and removal, and describe known limitations. It should also provide a way to report reproducible failures. No universal statistics establish how many players every project supports or how much performance it costs; those figures must come from the specific maintainer and your own hardware test.
