In Crusader Kings 3, a ruler is usually deposed through a faction civil war, not a single button. Vassals or counties build a faction, its military power and discontent rise, and an ultimatum eventually demands a change. Refusing starts a war that can install a claimant, create an independent realm, or replace your rule with a culture- or religion-based state. Liberty and Peasant victories leave you on the throne but weaken the authority, obligations, or income that keep later revolts under control. Imprisonment, hooks, dread, opinion management, and character schemes determine whether that pressure fizzles or explodes early.
What “deposing a ruler” means in CK3
Deposition is the loss of control over a title or realm because an organized group defeats the current liege. The game separates several outcomes that players often call a deposition:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A Claimant faction removes the current ruler from the targeted title and installs its chosen claimant.
- An Independence faction takes its members out of the liege’s realm, shrinking the ruler’s domain and political base.
- A Populist faction can create a new realm governed by the faction’s culture and/or religion.
- A Liberty faction normally keeps the ruler in place while demanding lower crown authority or lighter obligations.
- A Peasant faction seeks lower taxes and can reduce the revenue available to fund armies and control vassals.
There is also a distinct Depose war listed among civil wars and factions in the game-data reference for patch 1.20.1.1. It is described as a “War against the Tyranny of the defender,” with outcomes that differ from a normal claimant revolt.

How a faction reaches the point of rebellion
Military power is the first warning
A faction’s military power is the ratio between the combined strength of its members and the liege’s strength. The calculation therefore changes whenever a powerful vassal joins, leaves, loses troops, gains allies, or becomes weaker through another war. A faction that looks harmless while one duke is recovering can become a mortal threat when a second duke joins.

Check the faction panel rather than estimating from the number of members. The percentage reflects the relative force that would actually enter the civil war, including the liege’s current military position. A ruler fighting an external war may be much more vulnerable than the same ruler at full levies and with loyal allies available.
Discontent turns strength into a deadline
Factions begin accruing discontent once their military power is typically above 80 percent, according to Paradox Interactive’s 2020 development-era material. At 100 percent discontent, the faction soon issues an ultimatum. These thresholds explain why a faction can remain visible for a long time and then suddenly demand action: military power creates the opportunity, while discontent supplies the clock.
Discontent is not the same thing as military power. Reducing a faction below the strength threshold can stop or slow its progress, but adding a new member can push it back above the threshold. Treat the percentage and the progress bar as separate indicators.

The ultimatum creates the civil war
When the faction delivers its ultimatum, the liege can accept the demand or refuse and fight every member that has joined. Paradox summarizes the process this way: “Factions that grow large enough will eventually deliver an ultimatum to their liege, demanding certain concessions in exchange for continued peace.” Acceptance applies the faction’s demand without a war; refusal starts the civil war immediately.

The five faction types and what their victories do
| Faction | Who usually forms it | Victory demand | How it can damage the ruler |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claimant | Vassals supporting a selected claimant | Install that claimant on the targeted title | The current ruler loses the title and is replaced |
| Independence | Vassals seeking separation | Leave the liege’s realm | The realm loses members, territory, troops, and political leverage |
| Liberty | Vassals opposing the ruler’s authority or obligations | Lower crown authority or obligations | The ruler remains, but has less control over laws and vassal contributions |
| Populist | Unhappy counties, often with sympathetic vassals | Create a realm aligned with the faction’s culture and/or religion | Counties and supporters break away under a new ruler |
| Peasant | Unhappy counties demanding relief | Lower taxes | Revenue falls, limiting the ruler’s ability to maintain troops and buy stability |
Populist and Peasant factions are county-based rather than simply lists of disgruntled vassals. That distinction matters when diagnosing a revolt: improving one duke’s opinion will not automatically solve a county movement driven by cultural or religious tension.
Every route by which a ruler can be removed or weakened
Claimant faction victory
A claimant faction names the person it wants on the target title. If the faction wins its civil war, the claimant is installed and the current ruler is removed from that title. The result is a direct change of ruler, not merely a reduction in authority. The claimant’s identity and the title targeted determine who loses power; winning a claimant war against one kingdom does not automatically erase every title the old ruler holds outside the war’s scope.
Independence faction victory
An independence victory does not install a replacement monarch inside the old realm. Its members leave the liege’s realm, taking their titles and military resources with them. The defeated ruler may survive personally, yet emerge with fewer vassals, less income, a smaller army, and a weaker ability to deter the next faction.
Populist revolt victory
A successful Populist revolt can unite the participating counties and sympathetic vassals under a new ruler who shares the faction’s culture and religion. Because the faction begins in counties, the trigger is often local dissatisfaction rather than a single magnate’s ambition. Losing the counties can also remove the tax and levy base needed to recover from the war.

The special Depose war
The patch 1.20.1.1 game-data reference lists Depose among civil wars and factions and labels it a war against the defender’s tyranny. Its result depends on the peace outcome:
- Attacker victory: the defender’s radiance is severely tarnished.
- White peace: titles are preserved, but the attackers receive reasons to revoke titles.
- Defender victory: titles are preserved and rebelling vassals are imprisoned.
Because the reference is tied to a specific patch, verify the in-game war screen when playing a later version or a heavily modified game. Do not assume that every civil war uses the same victory and imprisonment rules.
Indirect collapse through Liberty or Peasant victories
Liberty and Peasant factions generally leave the ruler seated. Their danger is strategic: lower authority, reduced obligations, or lower taxes make the realm less capable of raising troops and enforcing decisions. A ruler who survives one of these wars with a weaker legal and financial base may be unable to stop a later claimant or independence faction.
How plots and schemes contribute to a deposition
CK3 treats rulers and vassals as characters pursuing power through politics as well as armies. Schemes can undermine a rival, create blackmail material, or arrange a murder. Those actions do not replace the faction system, but they can change which characters are alive, which titles have plausible claimants, and which vassals can be pressured into cooperation.

A successful blackmail operation can produce a hook, and a hook can prevent a vassal from joining a faction. Murder or other hostile schemes can remove a faction leader before the ultimatum, although a replacement character may inherit the same grievance. Schemes are therefore best understood as ways to alter faction membership and leadership, not as a guaranteed “depose” button.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why imprisonment can stop a faction—or start the war
A prisoner cannot belong to a faction
Imprisoning a faction member removes that character from the faction. A justified arrest can therefore dismantle a dangerous coalition without fighting every participant. It is most valuable when the target is a major contributor to military power or the faction’s organizer.
An unjust attempt can trigger an immediate rebellion
Trying to imprison a vassal without a valid reason is not a quiet preventive measure. A failed imprisonment attempt can trigger a rebellion immediately, regardless of how far the faction had progressed toward its normal discontent threshold. Paradox’s developer diary puts the risk plainly: “Actually imprisoning the rebels is another matter entirely, as a failed imprisonment attempt can trigger another rebellion.”
The practical choice is between a controlled arrest and an uncontrolled early war. If the target’s chance of escaping arrest is poor and you have a defensible reason, imprisonment may be safe. If the attempt is unjust and the faction already has overwhelming strength, clicking the button can remove your preparation time and let every member revolt at once.
Best Value
Use this imprisonment checklist
- Confirm whether the arrest is justified and what penalties follow if it fails.
- Compare the faction’s military power with your current troops, allies, and treasury, not with an ideal future army.
- Identify whether the target is the faction leader or merely one replaceable member.
- Check whether other wars are preventing you from concentrating forces at home.
- Consider hooks, dread, opinion improvement, or negotiated concessions before attempting an unjust arrest.
A practical counter-faction workflow
- Open the faction panel and classify the threat. Note the faction type, target title, members, military percentage, and discontent progress.
- Find the largest contributors. A single powerful duke may matter more than several tiny counts. Prioritize the characters whose departure would drop the faction below its strength threshold.
- Reduce willingness to join. Improve opinion, repair cultural or religious tensions, and use hooks where available. High dread also reduces willingness to join factions.
- Separate the coalition. A justified imprisonment can remove a member; a scheme can change leadership or create leverage. Do not make an unjust arrest while unable to survive an immediate war.
- Protect the military ratio. Finish external wars, gather troops, call reliable allies, and preserve money for mercenaries if the faction is nearing an ultimatum. Your faction percentage is relative, so your own troop losses can make the enemy appear stronger.
- Choose acceptance or war deliberately. Accepting a Liberty, Peasant, or other demand may preserve the dynasty when a civil war would risk deposition. Refusing a Claimant, Independence, or Populist ultimatum means fighting the stated war goal, not merely punishing one disloyal vassal.
How to read the warning signs
| What you see | What it means | Best immediate response |
|---|---|---|
| Faction below roughly 80% military power | It is usually not accruing normal discontent yet | Keep key vassals separated and prevent the ratio from rising |
| Faction above roughly 80% | Discontent can begin accumulating | Act before the progress reaches 100%; target major members first |
| Discontent at 100% | An ultimatum is imminent | Stop optional wars, gather forces, and decide whether to concede or fight |
| County-based Populist or Peasant faction | Local culture, religion, or tax grievances are driving the movement | Address county-level causes; vassal opinion alone may not solve it |
| Unjust imprisonment available | The arrest may trigger an immediate rebellion | Attempt it only if you can win the early war or have reduced the risk through leverage |
What to do when the ultimatum arrives
If the demand is survivable
Accepting can be the correct strategic choice when the concession is limited and your realm is already fighting elsewhere. A Liberty or Peasant settlement may reduce authority or income, but it avoids losing a title or realm. Use the breathing room to rebuild opinion, culture and religious cohesion, and military reserves before the next conflict.
If refusal is necessary
Refuse only after identifying the war goal and the members who will actually fight. Concentrate forces, defend the target title, and avoid dispersing armies to chase every rebel before the main enemy stack is defeated. The central question is not whether you can win one battle; it is whether you can sustain the war against every joined member long enough to enforce the result.
Why one victory does not permanently secure the throne
A civil-war victory changes the immediate faction, not the underlying relationships that created it. A ruler who wins while keeping low opinion, high cultural or religious tension, and weak finances can face another faction as soon as the next characters become eligible. Conversely, a ruler who accepts a limited concession, builds hooks, raises dread responsibly, and removes the strongest organizers may prevent a repeat revolt without another battlefield victory.
