How Ethereum Perpetual Futures Leverage Works—and Why Losses Can Exceed Your Deposit

Short answer: leverage lets a relatively small margin balance control a much larger ETH position. That magnifies gains and losses, while liquidation is governed by maintenance margin and the exchange’s mark price—not simply by the leverage number you selected. A fast move, trading fees, funding payments, slippage, or shared cross-margin collateral can leave you owing more than the margin initially posted. Whether a deficit is legally collectible or covered by negative-balance protection depends on the venue, contract, account type, and jurisdiction.

What an Ethereum perpetual future is

An Ethereum perpetual future is a derivative contract whose value tracks ETH without a scheduled expiry date. You do not necessarily own or withdraw the underlying ether; instead, your position records profit or loss as the contract’s reference price changes. Perpetual contracts normally use periodic funding payments to keep their price close to the spot market. A long may pay a short, or a short may pay a long, depending on the funding rate and the exchange’s schedule.

Binance’s product documentation, for example, identifies ETHUSDT and ETHUSD perpetual contracts and publishes leverage tiers and maintenance-margin rates for them. Those limits and rates are exchange parameters, not permanent properties of Ethereum. An exchange can change tiers, fees, collateral rules, funding calculations, or liquidation procedures, sometimes affecting positions that are already open.

The contract’s notional value is the total market exposure. Margin is the collateral supporting that exposure. Leverage is the ratio between them:

leverage = notional position value ÷ initial margin

At 10× leverage, $1,000 of initial margin can support a $10,000 position. The position’s profit and loss is calculated on the $10,000 exposure, not just on the $1,000 deposit.

How leverage changes ETH profit and loss

A 10× arithmetic illustration

Assume a linear ETH perpetual in which a trader posts $1,000 and opens a $10,000 long position. If ETH falls 1%, the position loses approximately $100 before fees, funding and other adjustments. That is about 10% of the posted margin. A 10% fall would produce an approximately $1,000 loss before maintenance-margin effects, commissions, funding, mark-price differences and execution costs.

This is an arithmetic illustration, not a historical market result or a universal exchange liquidation formula. It assumes the entire $10,000 notional remains open and that the contract settles linearly in the quoted currency. Inverse contracts, tiered margin schedules and partial position changes produce different calculations.

Selected leverage Margin controlling $10,000 notional Approximate adverse move that consumes the initial margin, before costs
2× $5,000 50%
5× $2,000 20%
10× $1,000 10%
20× $500 5%
50× $200 2%

The table shows only the relationship between notional and margin. Liquidation normally happens before the entire initial margin is mathematically exhausted because the exchange must preserve maintenance margin and cover estimated closing costs. Higher leverage therefore leaves less room for an adverse ETH move.

Worked ETH example

Suppose ETH is trading at $2,500 and the $10,000 linear position represents 4 ETH. A 1% decline takes ETH to roughly $2,475 and creates a loss of about $100. A 5% decline creates about a $500 loss; a 10% decline creates about a $1,000 loss. The actual account balance also changes with taker or maker fees, funding transfers, and any other open positions in the account.

Initial margin, maintenance margin and equity

Initial margin is the collateral required to open a position of a given size. Selecting 10× leverage does not guarantee that the exchange will permit 10× on every notional amount. Exchanges commonly reduce the maximum leverage as position size rises through risk tiers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintenance margin is the minimum equity the venue requires to keep the position open. It is usually a percentage of notional, but the percentage can rise in higher risk tiers. Your position can therefore become liquidatable while some initial margin remains.

Margin equity is the collateral available after unrealized profit or loss and account charges. A simplified representation is:

equity = collateral + unrealized P&L − fees − funding ± other account adjustments

Liquidation becomes possible when equity falls to, or below, the maintenance requirement plus any amount the exchange reserves for closing the position. The precise threshold, rounding, fee reserve and tier transitions differ by contract.

Why the displayed liquidation price is not a guarantee

Mark price, not the last trade

Most derivatives venues trigger risk controls with a mark price, an index-based or otherwise protected price designed to reduce manipulation by a single trade. The last traded price on the order book can be above or below that mark. Watching only the chart’s last-price candle can therefore give a misleading impression of how close liquidation is.

Maintenance tiers can change the threshold

If a position enters a larger notional bracket, its maintenance-margin rate may increase. Adding to a losing position can move the account into a higher tier and bring liquidation closer rather than safely lowering the average entry risk.

Costs continue while the position is open

Trading fees are charged when orders execute and when a position is closed. Funding payments occur at the contract’s scheduled intervals and can steadily reduce equity even when ETH is moving sideways. A liquidation engine may also reserve an estimated closing fee when it evaluates the account.

Execution can be worse during a rapid move

When ETH moves quickly, there may not be enough liquidity at the displayed price to close the full position. The liquidation order can fill across several prices, creating slippage. A stop order can reduce exposure earlier, but it is not guaranteed to fill at its trigger price in a disorderly market.

How far can ETH move before liquidation?

There is no single percentage that applies to every ETH perpetual. In a simplified isolated, linear position with no fees or funding, an adverse move of roughly 1 ÷ leverage would consume the initial margin: about 50% at 2×, 20% at 5×, 10% at 10× and 5% at 20×. Real liquidation generally occurs sooner because maintenance margin, closing fees and funding must be preserved.

To estimate the distance for a particular contract, collect the exchange’s current:

  • mark-price methodology and index constituents;
  • maintenance-margin rate for your exact notional tier;
  • initial-margin and leverage limits;
  • maker, taker and liquidation fees;
  • funding interval and payment rules;
  • collateral haircut and conversion rules, if non-stablecoin assets are accepted.

Then use the venue’s calculator as an estimate, stress-test a larger move, and leave a buffer. Do not treat a displayed liquidation price as a promise that the entire margin balance will be available to close the position.

Isolated versus cross (portfolio) margin

Feature Isolated margin Cross or portfolio margin
Collateral scope Funds assigned to one position or trading pair A shared pool across eligible positions and balances
Effect of one liquidation Normally limited to the collateral allocated to that position Losses can draw on other positions and shared collateral
Main benefit Easier to cap the amount exposed to one trade Profits elsewhere can help support a losing position
Main danger The allocated collateral can still be lost in full One ETH loss can consume a much broader account balance
Rules to verify Position-level maintenance, fees and liquidation process Portfolio offsets, collateral haircuts, concentration limits and liquidation waterfall

Isolated margin

Binance defines isolated margin as an independent account for a trading pair. If that position is liquidated, the risk is generally confined to the funds assigned to it, although those funds can still be wiped out. Coinbase likewise describes isolated positions as separate from other positions.

Cross or portfolio margin

Cross margin combines eligible collateral and unrealized profit or loss into a shared risk calculation. Coinbase documents ETH as an accepted cross-collateral asset for some perpetual-futures positions and explains that liquidation can occur when portfolio margin falls below maintenance margin. In a cross account, a losing ETH position may consume stablecoins, profits from another contract, or other supported assets before the account is closed.

Cross margin is not automatically safer because it postpones liquidation. It can provide more breathing room for a single position, but it also enlarges the amount that can be lost in one account-wide liquidation event.

Why losses can exceed the amount you deposited

Liquidation is not always an instant, exact close

A fast ETH move can jump through the price at which the exchange expected to liquidate. The closeout may occur at a worse price, and the resulting loss can exceed the original margin allocated to that position. Fees, funding and slippage add to the deficit.

Cross collateral exposes additional balances

With cross or portfolio margin, the relevant “deposit” is not necessarily the amount you mentally assigned to the ETH trade. The risk engine may use the entire shared derivatives balance and eligible collateral. A position that appears to have $1,000 of risk can therefore affect substantially more than $1,000 in the account.

Legal liability differs by venue and region

The Coinbase Derivatives rulebook filed with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission in 2023 states: “Futures trading is not suitable for all investors, and involves the risk of loss.” It also says that because only a percentage of a contract’s value is required, “it is possible to lose more than the amount of money deposited for a futures position.” Coinbase’s current risk disclosure says losses can exceed margin value and that the trader may be responsible for a deficit, while noting an exception for eligible retail customers in the European Economic Area who receive negative-balance protection.

That exception is not a universal rule. Before trading, read the customer agreement for your country, legal entity, account classification and specific contract. Do not assume that a spot-wallet balance, an EEA protection, or a policy on one exchange applies to another venue.

Insurance funds, bankruptcy transfer and auto-deleveraging

Some exchanges maintain insurance funds to absorb losses when a position cannot be closed before its equity becomes negative. Binance’s liquidation documentation describes insurance-fund procedures for such situations. If the fund is insufficient, a venue may use bankruptcy-price takeover or auto-deleveraging (ADL), in which profitable or highly leveraged opposing positions can be reduced according to the platform’s rules.

These mechanisms are venue-specific backstops. They can reduce the chance that a deficit is passed directly to a trader, but they do not make a leveraged position loss-limited or guarantee a particular exit price. Read the exchange’s liquidation waterfall, ADL ranking method and insurance-fund disclosures before relying on them.

A safer process for sizing an ETH perpetual

  1. Confirm the contract. Check whether it is linear or inverse, the quote currency, tick size, contract multiplier, funding interval and whether it is currently available in your jurisdiction.
  2. Check the current risk tier. Record the maximum leverage and maintenance-margin rate for your intended notional, not merely the headline maximum shown in the interface.
  3. Choose the margin mode deliberately. Use isolated margin when you need a position-specific loss boundary. Use cross or portfolio margin only when you understand which balances and assets are shared.
  4. Set notional from a loss limit. Decide the dollar amount you can lose, then calculate position size. Do not start with the highest leverage and work backward from the maximum the exchange allows.
  5. Keep a liquidation buffer. Account for a larger ETH move than your initial scenario, plus funding, fees and slippage. A buffer is not protection against every gap or exchange outage.
  6. Place an exit plan before entry. A stop-market order may reduce exposure earlier than liquidation; understand its trigger price, reduce-only setting and possible slippage.
  7. Monitor mark price and margin ratio. Alerts based only on last price can arrive too late. Watch maintenance requirements, funding debits and tier changes while the position is open.
  8. Review liability terms. Confirm whether a negative balance can be pursued, whether protection applies to your account type, and which legal entity operates the contract.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Confusing leverage with a guaranteed loss limit: leverage describes exposure relative to margin; it does not cap the liability. Size the position and select margin mode to define risk.
  • Assuming liquidation occurs at a round-number percentage: maintenance tiers and mark price make the threshold contract-specific. Use the current specification and stress-test the estimate.
  • Ignoring funding: repeated payments can erode equity during a flat market. Check the rate and next payment time before holding overnight or longer.
  • Adding margin without reassessing exposure: extra collateral may delay liquidation but increases the amount at stake, especially in cross mode.
  • Believing a stop order is guaranteed: gaps and thin order books can produce fills below the stop trigger. Use smaller size and avoid relying on a single exit mechanism.
  • Assuming spot and derivatives balances are separate: cross collateral and deficit rules can connect them. Read the account’s collateral permissions and liquidation policy.
  • Using a calculator from another venue: formulas, mark indices, fees, tiers and contract multipliers differ. Use the calculator for the exact exchange and contract.

What to verify before opening any ETH perpetual

Save the contract specification and risk disclosure that apply on the day you trade. Verify the venue’s leverage cap, maintenance tiers, mark-price index, funding schedule, liquidation fee, insurance-fund or ADL process, collateral haircuts, withdrawal restrictions during liquidation, and rules for negative balances. Recheck them after a major position-size change or a platform update.

The central risk is straightforward: leverage turns a small ETH price movement into a large percentage change in margin equity. Isolated margin can confine the collateral assigned to one position, while cross margin can put a wider pool of assets at risk. Liquidation, funding and execution are controlled by the exchange’s rules, and a deficit may remain your responsibility. Treat the leverage setting as a risk parameter—not as a measure of how much loss you can safely afford.
