Short answer: Treat an episodic remaster as a separate product unless its publisher documents an import tool. Your episode purchases are account entitlements tied to a specific edition and platform, while save data belongs to the installed game and platform. A complete-season bundle may unlock every episode, but owning Episode 1 alone can still require a Season Pass for Episodes 2–5. Moving a save from PlayStation to Xbox, from Steam to a console, or between other platform families is usually unsupported unless the game’s support documentation explicitly says otherwise.
What a remaster changes—and what it does not
A remaster can preserve the same story while using a different application, save format, entitlement package, or platform license. That is why an original save, an episode purchase, and a remastered copy should be treated as three related but separate things.

- Save data records progress made by a particular game installation and platform ecosystem.
- Episode entitlement records what your store account is licensed to play.
- Product licensing determines whether your copy is valid for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Steam, or another platform.
Ownership of an episode does not prove that a remaster can read the old save. Conversely, a save file does not grant ownership of episodes that are not included in the edition you bought.
How save files are handled
A save belongs to the title that created it
Feral Interactive’s official Life Is Strange FAQ describes saves as files stored in the game’s preferences folder. That is a useful way to understand the boundary: the save is a game-data artifact, not a receipt for downloadable content and not a universal profile that every edition can open.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
An original release and its remaster may use different internal identifiers, folders, or data structures. Unless the publisher provides an import path, the remaster may simply ignore the old files. Copying a file into a new folder is not a supported conversion method and can produce no visible result or, in the worst case, unusable destination data.
Same platform does not automatically mean compatible
Keeping the same console family or PC storefront improves the odds of a transfer only when the publisher has implemented it. The original game and remaster can still be separate applications with separate save locations. Check the remaster’s support page for terms such as “import save,” “transfer progress,” or “compatible save.” If those words do not appear, plan to begin a new save.
Cloud synchronization is not an import guarantee
A platform cloud service can restore files for the same title and account, but synchronization alone does not convert an original save into a remaster save. A cloud copy of the original application remains a cloud copy of the original application’s data. The remaster must explicitly recognize and migrate it.
How episode purchases and season passes work
Entitlement is controlled by the edition and account
Episode access is attached to the store account and the edition purchased. The official Life Is Strange FAQ states that the story has five episodes. It also distinguishes the Complete Season from an Episode 1 purchase:

| Purchase | Episodes included | What you need for the remaining story |
|---|---|---|
| Complete Season | All five episodes | No additional episode purchase for that season |
| Episode 1 only | Episode 1 | Episodes 2–5 through the Season Pass |
That distinction applies to the edition described by Feral’s FAQ; a remastered collection can package the same content under a different product listing. Read the exact store entry for your platform instead of assuming that an old episode purchase unlocks a new collection.
A remastered collection can be a new entitlement
A collection that includes every episode may be sold as one complete product, even when the original release offered episodes separately. Your platform account may therefore show the remaster as a new purchase while still showing the original episodes as owned. The two entries can coexist without sharing saves or licenses.
Physical and digital editions can differ in practical ways
Square Enix lists Life Is Strange Remastered Collection in physical and digital forms for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Steam, with platform-specific support information. A disc or cartridge must match the console family, and a digital purchase must match the storefront account and platform. Packaging that says “collection” does not override those platform boundaries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPlatform licenses and cross-platform saves
Telltale Games’ 2024 official FAQ gives the licensing rule directly: “No, licenses are specific to their platform.” In practical terms, buying a game on one platform does not normally grant the equivalent version on another. A PlayStation license is not a Steam license, and an Xbox license is not a Nintendo Switch license.

Square Enix’s support documentation is equally direct about saves: “No. There is no cross-save functionality across different platforms.” Unless a game’s own support page announces a separate migration service, assume that a move between PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC requires a new purchase where applicable and a new save.
| Move you are considering | Default expectation | What could change the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Original release to remaster on the same platform | Separate save unless an import path is documented | An official save-import feature |
| PlayStation to Xbox | New platform license and no cross-save | A publisher-operated cross-platform migration system |
| Steam to console | New platform license and fresh save | Explicit cross-save support for that title |
| Demo to full game on the same device and account | Transfer may work when the publisher supports it | The destination must not already contain a full-game save |
The documented exception: demo-to-full transfer
Square Enix documents a narrow transfer case that should not be mistaken for a general remaster rule. A demo save can transfer to the full game when the demo and full version remain on the same device and use the same account. The full game must not already have created its own save data.
If a full-game save already exists, the transfer prompt may be suppressed. Square Enix instructs players to delete the existing full-game save before the prompt can appear. Deleting that destination save removes the progress stored there, so copy or back up anything you intend to keep before following the procedure. This is an explicit, same-device migration feature—not evidence that an original release save will import into every remaster.
What to check before buying an episodic remaster
- Identify the exact product. Record whether the listing is Episode 1, a Season Pass, a Complete Season, or a remastered collection.
- Match the platform. Confirm the edition is for your exact PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or Steam storefront. Physical and digital listings can represent different platform licenses.
- Read the publisher’s save-transfer statement. Look specifically for an import tool, supported source version, destination version, and any requirement to delete an existing destination save.
- Check episode scope. Verify whether all five episodes are included or whether Episodes 2–5 remain a separate Season Pass purchase.
- List content differences. Look for bundled DLC, bonus episodes, or platform-specific extras rather than inferring them from the word “remastered.”
- Decide whether a fresh start is acceptable. If no import is documented, assume your choices and episode progress will need to be recreated manually.
How to handle a supported transfer
When a publisher does document migration, follow its order exactly. The general pattern shown by Square Enix’s demo-to-full instructions is:

- Keep the source save on the same device and signed-in account used to create it.
- Install or launch the full version without creating destination save data first.
- Look for the transfer prompt or import command at the point specified by the support article.
- If the prompt is missing, check whether the full game has already made a save. A destination save may need to be removed before the prompt appears.
- Restart the full game and confirm that the expected episode, choices, and progress are present before deleting the source data.
Do not generalize these steps to an unsupported original-to-remaster move. The source and destination versions, device, and account must match the conditions published for that particular game.

The remaster starts at the beginning
First verify that the remaster actually advertises save import. If it does not, a new game is expected. If import is documented, confirm that the source save is on the required device or account and that the destination has not already generated incompatible save data.
An episode appears locked
Open the store page for the exact edition and account. An Episode 1 purchase does not automatically provide Episodes 2–5 in the Life Is Strange season described by Feral; those episodes require the Season Pass unless you own the Complete Season. Also check that the remaster is installed under the account that owns the entitlement.
Your old purchase is visible, but the remaster asks you to pay
This can happen when the remaster is sold as a separate product with its own license. Telltale’s platform-specific licensing explanation means that an entitlement on one platform cannot be assumed to unlock another platform’s version. Confirm the platform, edition name, and account before contacting support.

A transfer prompt does not appear
For the documented demo-to-full case, an existing full-game save can hide the prompt. Preserve any destination progress you need, remove the destination save only if the official instructions require it, then relaunch and check again. If the migration is between platforms or between an original release and a remaster, the absence of a prompt generally indicates that no supported transfer exists.
Life Is Strange Remastered Collection as a buying example
Square Enix gives the collection a release date of February 1, 2022 and lists physical and digital versions for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Steam. Those listings demonstrate why the product page matters: the collection’s content and support information are presented per platform, while the original season’s episode ownership is described separately by Feral Interactive.
Before purchasing, match the collection’s platform to the system on which you intend to play, confirm whether the listing includes the complete season, and look for an explicit save-import statement. If none is published, keep the original installation and its save until you have decided whether starting over is acceptable.

A simple decision rule
- Publisher documents import: follow the stated source, device, account, and destination-save conditions.
- Publisher documents no cross-save: plan on a new save when changing platforms.
- Edition lists Complete Season or full collection: expect all included episodes under that edition’s entitlement.
- Edition lists Episode 1 only: budget for the Season Pass covering Episodes 2–5.
- Documentation is silent: treat the remaster as separate and do not count on old saves or purchases carrying over.
