How Enterprises Are Extending Generative AI With Reasoning and Agents

Enterprise AI is adding reasoning and agentic workflows to generative AI, but adoption measures vary. Learn what the evidence shows and how to assess systems.

Enterprises are adding multi-step reasoning, tool use and bounded action to generative AI—not replacing generative AI with a separate, universally adopted technology. Current reports show rising use and agentic-AI pilots, but they measure different populations and do not establish a single market-wide shift or a common definition of “reasoning AI.”

What reasoning AI means in an enterprise

“Reasoning AI” is not a consistently measured market category. In practice, the useful distinction is often between a system that returns an answer and one that works through a task in stages: retrieving information, calling approved tools, checking results and, where permitted, changing business data or triggering a workflow.

Generative models can produce content and support reasoning, so the distinction is not simply one model type versus another. A reasoning-capable model is not automatically an agent, and an agent does not have to operate autonomously. The deployed system also depends on its context and retrieval, workflow orchestration, tool permissions, evaluation, monitoring and human oversight.

Are enterprises actually moving beyond generative AI?

The evidence points to deeper and broader enterprise AI use, alongside experimentation with agents—not a wholesale move away from generative AI. The figures below describe different samples and kinds of activity, so they should not be combined into one adoption curve.

Measure Reported finding What it covers
OpenAI enterprise usage ChatGPT message volume grew 8× year over year; API reasoning-token consumption per organization grew 320× year over year. OpenAI business-customer data reported in 2025, not a market-wide adoption rate. OpenAI, “The State of Enterprise AI”
Agentic AI adoption 36% of surveyed organizations were piloting or using agentic AI. Capgemini Research Institute survey of 1,505 organizations, fielded in November 2025 and reported in 2026. The figure combines pilot and use; it does not mean scaled production deployment. Capgemini Research Institute report
Generative AI use 82% of respondents used generative AI at least weekly. Wharton Human-AI Research and GBK Collective survey reported in 2025. This is a GenAI-use measure, not a direct comparison with reasoning-AI adoption. Wharton and GBK Collective report
Activated agents on a platform Average activated agents per organization rose from 5 in February 2025 to 13 by April 2026. Salesforce platform activity, not a representative estimate of all companies. Salesforce Agentic Enterprise Index

These findings have different units: customer usage, survey responses, adoption stages and activity on one platform. They establish neither that all enterprises have adopted agents nor that agentic systems caused productivity or financial gains. In particular, frequent generative-AI use remains part of the picture; it is not evidence that enterprises have left generative AI behind.

What AI agents can do in business workflows

OpenAI’s enterprise report names several areas where organizations use AI. These are categories of reported use, not proof that every company has deployed them or that each requires an agent.

  • Assistants and search: answer questions or help employees find relevant information.
  • Workflow automation: coordinate steps in a process, potentially using approved tools.
  • Coding and developer tools: support software-development tasks.
  • Customer support: assist with service interactions.
  • Data work: analyze information and summarize or extract content.

More action can make a workflow useful, but it also raises the stakes. An assistant that drafts a response and an agent that sends it, updates a record or initiates a transaction do not have the same permission needs or failure costs. A practical deployment keeps tool access and identities bounded, validates consequential actions, records activity and routes uncertain or high-impact decisions to people.

How to evaluate reasoning models and agent systems

Test the system on representative work, not only on general model rankings. A 2025 KAMI paper describes a benchmark with 170,000 test items across 35 model configurations and reports that traditional benchmark rankings poorly predicted practical agentic performance within its evaluation. That finding is specific to the paper’s benchmark and configurations; it is not a verdict on every public benchmark. Read the KAMI paper.

Build an evaluation around the actual job, the tools it can use and the cost of a mistake. Compare:

  • Task success and correctness: Does the system complete the intended job, and are its outputs accurate?
  • Reliability across runs: Does it behave consistently when the same task is repeated or inputs vary?
  • Tool-use accuracy: Does it select the right tool, provide appropriate inputs and verify the result?
  • Latency and total cost: Are response time and end-to-end operating costs acceptable for the workflow?
  • Access-control behavior: Does it stay within the data and actions its identity is allowed to access?
  • Observability and escalation: Can staff inspect what happened, detect failures and take over when needed?

Procurement can also involve trade-offs across models rather than a single winner. Andreessen Horowitz’s reporting from a survey of 100 CIOs across 15 industries, supplemented by buyer interviews, describes organizations mixing models to balance performance and cost and applying more rigorous evaluation practices. This is buyer-survey evidence, not a census of all enterprise procurement. Read the CIO survey report.

What the adoption figures do—and do not—show

  • They are not directly comparable: OpenAI reports its own customers’ usage, Capgemini and Wharton report survey findings, and Salesforce reports activity on its platform.
  • Agent adoption is not reasoning-model adoption: agent reports do not necessarily isolate which model capabilities enabled a deployment.
  • Pilots are not scaled operations: a combined pilot-and-use figure should not be read as the share of organizations running agents broadly in production.
  • Usage is not proof of returns: reported adoption does not, by itself, establish causal productivity or financial impact.

The cited figures support a shift in emphasis toward more involved workflows and agent experimentation, while generative AI remains widely used. They do not establish a universal threshold for when an enterprise has “moved beyond” generative AI, or a comparable ROI figure attributable specifically to reasoning models.
