Enshrouded ties construction, crafting, exploration and survival to the Flame Altar. The altar marks the protected cube where you can permanently terraform terrain and build. Rescued survivors unlock specialist workstations and recipe families, while biome materials and global Flame upgrades open stronger gear and more dangerous regions.
The two Flame systems are different: upgrading an individual Flame Altar enlarges one base’s build volume, while Strengthen the Flame improves world-wide attributes, Shroud endurance and access to later regions. Understanding that distinction prevents the most common progression mistake: expanding a beautiful home when the real bottleneck is a missing survivor, workstation, biome resource or global Flame objective.

What the Flame Altar controls
Every permanent base begins by placing a Flame Altar. Its active zone is a cube, not a flat circular radius. Within that volume you can place structural blocks, terrain materials, furniture and other props, and you can permanently raise, lower or excavate the landscape. The same boundary governs terraforming, so a room dug outside the zone will not remain a permanent part of the settlement.
The altar also functions as the local anchor for your workshop network. Beds, storage, crafting stations and recruited survivors should be arranged inside the claimed volume so that the base remains useful as it expands. You can move an altar, but doing so changes the cube’s position in every direction; a layout that fitted before the move may end up partly outside the protected area.

Build-cube sizes and local upgrades
The Official Enshrouded Wiki lists a claimed altar’s initial build cube as 40×40×40. Individual altar upgrades increase that volume to 80×80×80, then 120×120×120 and finally 160×160×160. These upgrades consume Shroud Cores and Shroud Nexus, so they are a local construction investment rather than a direct combat or exploration upgrade.

Because the zone grows in all three axes, place the altar with future vertical construction in mind. A high tower, underground hall and broad courtyard all consume the same cube. Keep a clear route between the altar, storage, beds and crafting stations before filling the footprint with decoration.
Flame Altar level versus Strengthen the Flame
These labels describe separate progression tracks. An individual altar level changes one base’s construction capacity. The global Strengthen the Flame progression improves your character and the world state: the Official Enshrouded Wiki describes higher attributes, longer maximum Shroud time and access to Shroud Passages leading into regions that were previously deadly.

This means the two upgrades can be out of sync. You may own a spacious 160×160×160 home but still lack the global Flame strength to survive the next Shroud region. Conversely, a strong global Flame does not enlarge a cramped starter base. Choose the upgrade that addresses the current constraint instead of treating every Flame-related requirement as interchangeable.

How voxel building works
Enshrouded uses voxel construction rather than a simple furniture-placement grid. You can carve rooms from hillsides, excavate underground spaces, reshape slopes and assemble buildings from structural blocks and terrain materials. The result is closer to editing a three-dimensional volume than placing objects on a flat foundation.
A reliable first-base sequence
- Place the altar above the Shroud. Pick ground that leaves room for a compact shelter, a workshop cluster and a route to storage. Avoid committing the altar to a narrow ledge if you expect to build vertically.
- Secure a small shelter. Protect the basic survival loop before spending scarce materials on a large façade or complex landscaping.
- Recruit the first crafting survivors. Quests and exploration reveal specialists whose presence unlocks stations and recipes. A larger house without those specialists does not create higher-tier crafting.
- Cluster stations and storage. Keep workbenches, beds, containers and the altar inside the protected cube, with walking space between them. This reduces repeated trips as your recipe network grows.
- Expand only when the footprint is the bottleneck. Spend Shroud Cores and Shroud Nexus on an altar upgrade when a project, storage plan or terraforming job genuinely needs more volume.
The official game description presents this combination of voxel terraforming, ruin rebuilding and survivor recruitment as the central loop. Construction is therefore not isolated creative mode: the people you rescue and the regions you explore determine which practical building materials and stations become available.

The 1.0 release added the Airborne Architect skill, which gives a free-flying building view for positioning and editing structures. It also introduced Sparkworks, a system for connecting interactive elements through rules in a two-dimensional graph editor. Sparkworks can support logic-driven base features once your core stations and survival routine are stable.
The January 2025 Pact of the Flame update added a first-person building camera, full-axis rotation for decorative props, tools for editing overgrowth and decay, food and drink placement, and more than 70 new props and material additions. These features make finishing work easier, but they do not change the altar boundary: permanent edits still have to be inside the active cube.

How crafting recipes and workstations unlock
Crafting progression has three linked requirements: a rescued specialist, the workstation that specialist provides, and materials from increasingly dangerous regions. The official product information states that survivors who take refuge at your base unlock advanced workshops and the ability to craft epic weapons and armor. A recipe will remain unavailable if any one of those links is missing.
Survivors expand the recipe network
Recruit specialists as quests and exploration reveal them. Each survivor broadens the station and recipe network rather than simply adding another resident to the settlement. Keep their beds and relevant stations inside the altar zone so the workshop cluster remains functional while you rebuild or enlarge the base.
Stations define what materials can become
A new region may provide the resource needed for a higher tier, but gathering it alone does not unlock the associated gear. You must also have the appropriate survivor and workstation. Conversely, recruiting a survivor cannot substitute for the biome materials or boss resources required by that station’s recipes.
Flame strength opens the next armor tier
The 1.0 release changelog makes the Flame connection explicit: upgrading the global Flame automatically unlocks armor sets for the following crafting tier. When a tier is blocked, check the global Flame objective before repeatedly farming an existing recipe. The efficient sequence is to complete the Flame-strength requirement, reach the newly viable region, gather its signature materials, and return those materials to the correct specialist station.

A progression loop that avoids wasted grinding
Use the following order whenever you reach a new stage:
- Stabilize one safe altar. Build a compact shelter and organize storage before attempting a sprawling capital.
- Advance the survivor roster. Follow available quests and exploration leads to recruit the next specialist.
- Identify the current region’s materials. Gather the biome-specific resources and boss materials that feed the newly available station instead of stockpiling only low-tier wood and stone.
- Strengthen the global Flame when access is the barrier. If the next Shroud passage is deadly or the following armor tier is locked, improve the world-wide Flame progression.
- Craft the practical upgrades first. Convert new materials into weapons, armor, tools, food, potions and construction pieces that improve the next expedition.
- Expand a local altar when space is the barrier. Buy a larger cube when your workshops, storage or terraforming plan cannot fit, not merely because an upgrade is available.
- Add decoration and automation last. Sparkworks logic, elaborate landscaping and large prop collections are easier to maintain after stations and survival supplies are dependable.
What to upgrade first
For a new world, prioritize a functional base and the people who make it productive. The recommended order is:
- First: one protected altar, a compact shelter, basic storage and a reachable workshop cluster.
- Next: survivor recruitment, because specialists unlock entire families of recipes and stations.
- Then: current-biome materials and boss resources, which feed the next tier rather than merely increasing your stockpile of starter materials.
- After that: global Flame strength when Shroud duration, attributes, region access or the next armor tier is the limiting factor.
- Finally: the local altar expansion when the 40×40×40, 80×80×80 or 120×120×120 cube is physically too small for your base plan.
In a multiplayer world with several settlements, remember that altar expansion is local. A larger cube at one base does not enlarge another base, while global Flame progress is the relevant choice when the whole group needs better attributes, Shroud endurance or access to a later region.
Why you cannot build outside the Flame Altar
The usual cause is simple: the target block or terrain edit lies outside the active altar cube. Since the boundary is three-dimensional, being beside the altar horizontally is not enough; a basement below the cube or a tower above it is also outside the zone.
Check the boundary
- Confirm that the altar is the active claimed base for the location.
- Move the camera around the proposed build and check its height as well as its distance from the altar.
- Remember that a large-looking structure can cross the boundary even when its foundation is inside.
Check whether the project needs a larger cube
If your layout reaches the edge, upgrade that individual altar with the required Shroud Cores and Shroud Nexus. The upgrade enlarges the cube in every direction. It does not strengthen the global Flame or make a dangerous region safer.

Check whether the location is meant to be temporary
Construction outside the protected volume may be possible only as a temporary placement or may fail entirely, depending on the object and current game rules. Permanent terraforming and settlement construction require the active altar zone. If a project must remain permanent, relocate it inside the cube or claim a better-positioned altar before investing in detail.
Current 1.0 progression facts
Keen Games’ October 14, 2026 release changelog lists a maximum player level of 50 and gear up to level 55. It introduces the Cinder’s Cradle region and a new crafting tier, and states that the next Flame level raises the maximum number of Flame Altars to 15. The same notes describe Sparkworks, adventure sharing and the Airborne Architect free-flying building skill.
Those figures and features are version-sensitive. Balance patches can change level limits, unlock conditions or menu wording, so verify the progression panel in your installed build when a requirement appears different. The underlying distinction remains useful: local altar upgrades solve construction volume, while global Flame upgrades solve character, Shroud and region progression.
How the major updates changed building and crafting
The system continues to expand through updates. Pact of the Flame, released in January 2025, focused on construction control with first-person building, decorative rotation, overgrowth and decay editing, food and drink placement, and more than 70 props and material additions. Souls of the Frozen Frontier added a crafting tier, new stations, nine armor sets, six building-block materials and five terrain materials. These additions increase the number of things you can make, but they still follow the same dependency chain of survivor, station, region resource and appropriate Flame progression.

When a feature is unavailable, identify which layer is blocking it. A wall, basement or landscaping edit that will not stay put is an altar-volume problem. A deadly passage or insufficient Shroud time is a global Flame problem. A missing weapon, armor set, station or building material usually points to a survivor, workstation, biome-resource or tier requirement. Solving the correct layer is faster than repeatedly gathering materials or enlarging a base that is not actually holding back your progress.
