Engineered bacteria can carry a hidden message by producing distinct fluorescent signals in a carefully arranged pattern. In a 2011 laboratory demonstration, researchers used seven modified Escherichia coli strains to encode a 70-character message across 144 colonies. The idea was a proof of principle—not a ready-made secure messaging system.
How do bacteria encode a message?
The method, called Steganography by Printed Arrays of Microbes (SPAM), used seven genetically engineered E. coli strains. Each strain expressed a different fluorescent protein. Researchers arranged colonies in an array and used pairs of fluorescent signals to represent characters.

In the reported scheme, seven distinguishable signals could form 49 possible pairs. Those pairs served as a code for alphanumeric characters. The bacteria did not naturally spell words: the message depended on engineered traits, a designed mapping between signals and characters, and the positions of colonies in the array.

What did the experiment demonstrate?
The 2011 paper reports an array of 144 colonies encoding a 70-character message. That is the demonstrated example in the study, not a universal capacity limit for bacterial messages or a claim that every array of that size can carry the same amount of information.

The work was presented as “InfoBiology”: using living organisms to encode, carry, and release information. Tufts’ account described the concept as “living ink” and attributed it to chemists David Walt and Manuel Palacios. Walt said the group had used chemical methods to send messages and wondered whether biology could do the same.
How was the hidden message revealed?
The information was not simply legible from an unopened plate. The colonies had to grow and express their fluorescent proteins, and the signals had to be viewed under suitable conditions. Growth media and chemical induction could also serve as “biociphers”: the recipient needed the right biological inputs, as well as the code and viewing conditions, to reveal and interpret the message.

This dependence on conditions is what makes the approach a form of steganography rather than merely a different alphabet. The information was embedded in biological material and could be released on demand or at a chosen time under the right conditions.

Was this a practical secure communications system?
No. The sources describe a laboratory proof of principle, not an operational communications product, validated security system, or commercially available kit. The fact that the code required particular strains, conditions, and interpretation does not by itself establish resistance to interception, copying, or tampering.

Ordinary invisible ink hides writing in a material that can be revealed with a suitable treatment. In this experiment, the encoded signals came from engineered bacteria, and revealing them depended on growth, induction, and appropriate fluorescence viewing. That makes the carrier a living system with biological requirements, rather than a conventional ink. It is an explanatory distinction, not a head-to-head performance comparison.

The striking point is that biology can act as both carrier and display: the engineered strains produce the signals that a reader decodes. The same requirements that make the method unusual also make it more involved than simply writing and developing a note.

What the demonstration does—and does not—show
- It shows: engineered E. coli strains with distinct fluorescent outputs can be arranged to encode a designed message.
- It shows: the researchers’ reported example carried 70 characters in 144 colonies, using paired signals from seven strains.
- It does not show: that bacteria naturally encode messages, that 49 characters or 70 characters are general limits, or that the approach is a proven secure communications product.
- It does not establish: commercial deployment of the suggested barcoding, anti-counterfeiting, or covert-communication applications.
