The authors report selective hydrogenation across several functional groups and reuse for at least five runs with consistent activity. Those are results reported for the substrates tested—not proof that the catalyst will work for every alkyne, is commercially available, or is ready for industrial use.
What the cobalt catalyst does
Alkyne semi-hydrogenation adds hydrogen to a carbon–carbon triple bond to form a double bond, while aiming to stop before further hydrogenation produces an alkane. The 2022 paper by Peter McNeice and coauthors describes a catalyst made of cobalt nanoparticles modified by nitrogen-doped carbon, with silica as the support. The authors present it as a lead- and palladium-free option for selective alkyne hydrogenation and report applications to fine chemicals and vitamin precursors.

The design addresses the metals in a widely used selective catalyst, but it does not make the reaction or its results interchangeable with Lindlar chemistry. Catalyst composition, reaction conditions, substrate, and product selectivity all matter.

The evidence available for these approaches is not a controlled, head-to-head comparison. The reported studies also describe distinct catalyst systems, so their results should not be combined as if they came from one material or set of experiments.

| Approach | Composition or hydrogen source | Reported evidence | What the evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lindlar catalyst | A typical formulation described by Chemistry World is 5 wt% palladium on calcium carbonate with 1–5 wt% lead and quinoline; this is a typical recipe, not a universal formulation. | Used for selective conversion of alkynes to alkenes. Chemistry World also discusses concerns including over-hydrogenation and isomerization. | The typical formulation does not describe every Lindlar catalyst or establish results for a particular substrate. |
| 2022 nitrogen-doped-carbon-modified cobalt | Cobalt nanoparticles modified by nitrogen-doped carbon on silica; the paper describes the catalyst as lead- and palladium-free. The hydrogen source and operating conditions are not stated in the indexed abstract. | The authors report fine-chemical and vitamin-precursor applications, tolerance of cyano, keto, aldehyde, and nitro groups, and consistent activity over at least five runs. | The abstract does not provide a complete substrate-by-substrate comparison, universal scope, scale-up evidence, or commercial availability. |
| 2017 Co/phen@SiO₂-800 | N-graphitic-modified cobalt nanoparticles supported on silica, as described in the 2017 ACS Catalysis study. The hydrogen source and operating conditions are not stated here. | That study reports up to 93% selectivity for Z isomers from internal alkynes, and conversion of terminal alkynes to terminal alkenes. | This is a different catalyst notation and study from the 2022 system; its selectivity result cannot be assigned to the 2022 catalyst. |
| 2023 transfer semihydrogenation | Ligand-free, in situ-generated cobalt nanoparticles used with ammonia-borane, according to a 2023 New Journal of Chemistry paper. | The abstract reports 72–96% yields of Z-alkenes for the aryl–aryl, aryl–alkyl, and terminal alkynes studied. | This is a separate approach, not the 2022 supported catalyst; its yields do not provide a direct comparison with the other studies. |
What the 2022 study reports—and what it does not
Functional-group tolerance
The authors report selective hydrogenation in the presence of cyano, keto, aldehyde, and nitro groups. This indicates that those groups were compatible in the reactions described; it does not establish that every molecule containing them will behave the same way. The indexed abstract does not supply the full substrate-by-substrate results needed to assess scope in detail.
Recycling
The authors say the optimal catalyst could be recycled for at least five runs with consistent activity. This is a paper-specific report, not a general durability guarantee or evidence of long-term industrial operation.

Scale and availability
The paper’s abstract describes research applications, not a retail product or industrial-scale deployment. The reported results alone do not establish commercial availability, manufacturing readiness, or lifecycle and safety advantages beyond avoiding lead and palladium in the catalyst formulation.
