Windows 10 vs. 11: How to Put a Laptop in Tablet Mode

Windows 10 has a Tablet mode tile in Action Center; Windows 11 switches tablet behavior automatically on compatible touch-capable 2-in-1 devices.

How you switch a Windows laptop to tablet mode depends on its Windows version and hardware. Windows 10 has a Tablet mode button in Action Center. Windows 11 has no manual tablet-mode switch: on a compatible touchscreen 2-in-1, it changes behavior automatically when you fold the device into tablet form or detach its keyboard. A standard laptop cannot gain tablet mode through a setting alone.

First, check whether your laptop supports tablet mode

Tablet mode is intended for touch-capable screens on tablets and 2-in-1 PCs. The device also needs a design that can be used in tablet form, such as a convertible hinge or a detachable keyboard. If your laptop has no touchscreen or cannot fold or detach into tablet form, changing a Windows setting will not turn it into a tablet.

Windows 11: enter tablet form and let Windows switch automatically

Windows 11 does not provide a manual tablet-mode toggle in Settings or Quick Settings. Microsoft says its tablet behavior activates when the device detects that a wired or wireless keyboard has been detached, or that the device has been converted to tablet form. It turns off when a keyboard is attached or the device returns to traditional laptop form. See Microsoft’s Windows tablet-mode guidance.

  1. Make sure your device is a touch-capable 2-in-1 or detachable PC.
  2. Fold the keyboard behind the screen or detach it, as your device’s design allows.
  3. Use the touchscreen; Windows adjusts its behavior automatically when it recognizes the tablet configuration.

Make the taskbar easier to use by touch

On supported Windows 11 2-in-1 devices, you can enable a touch-optimized taskbar separately from the automatic tablet behavior. Right-click or press and hold the taskbar, choose Taskbar settings, expand Taskbar behaviors, then select Optimize taskbar for touch interactions when this device is used as a tablet. Microsoft notes this option is available only on 2-in-1 devices with tablet functionality. Details: Microsoft’s touchscreen and taskbar instructions.

Show the touch keyboard when you need it

The touch keyboard is a separate setting, not a tablet-mode control. Windows lets you choose whether its taskbar icon is shown Never, Always, or When no keyboard attached. There is also a setting for showing the touch keyboard in tablet mode when no keyboard is attached. Labels and locations can differ by Windows version; use Microsoft’s instructions for your version: Microsoft’s touch-keyboard guidance.

Windows 10: turn on Tablet mode in Action Center

  1. Select the Action Center icon near the taskbar clock.
  2. Select the Tablet mode tile. If you do not see it, choose Expand above the quick-action tiles.
  3. If the tile is missing from the available actions, open Settings > System > Notifications & actions > Edit your quick actions > Add > Tablet mode.

If Tablet mode is not available to add, Microsoft says Windows may not be detecting the device as touch-capable. The control does not make an incompatible laptop support touch or tablet form.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update updates, technical assistance, and security fixes stopped after that date. See Microsoft’s tablet-mode page for its current Windows 10 instructions and support notice.

At a glance: Windows 10 and Windows 11

Windows version How tablet behavior starts Manual control Hardware needed
Windows 10 Select the Tablet mode tile in Action Center. Yes; Action Center tile. Touch-capable device; a tablet or 2-in-1 design is needed for tablet-form use.
Windows 11 Windows detects a keyboard detachment or the device entering tablet form. No manual tablet-mode toggle. Touch-capable 2-in-1 or detachable device with tablet functionality.

If tablet mode does not seem to work

  • No touchscreen: Windows cannot provide touchscreen tablet use through a software toggle. Confirm your laptop’s specifications or manufacturer documentation.
  • Windows 11 laptop remains in ordinary laptop behavior: Fold it into tablet form or detach its keyboard if the design allows it. Windows 11 does not have a manual switch to force tablet mode.
  • Windows 10 tile is hidden: Expand the Action Center quick actions. If needed, try adding Tablet mode through the quick-action edit path above.
  • Windows 10 tile cannot be added: Windows may not detect a touch-capable device, according to Microsoft.
  • Typing or taskbar controls are awkward: Adjust the touch-keyboard visibility or, on eligible Windows 11 2-in-1s, the touch-optimized taskbar. Neither setting is the tablet-mode switch.
