It is a research approach, not an established clinical test for choosing treatment. It is also different from using an electrochemical sensor to measure the amount of drug in a sample.
What does electrochemical screening measure?
A cell-based assay exposes a biological model to a drug and monitors changes associated with the cells or their surroundings. The sensor does not directly measure tumor shrinkage or a patient’s clinical benefit. Its readout is a proxy whose meaning depends on the cell model, sensor design and biological marker being measured. The 2026 review by Corsato and colleagues describes work in both two-dimensional (2D) cultures and three-dimensional (3D) models, including spheroids and organ-on-a-chip systems (Analytica Chimica Acta, 2026).

Conventional in-vitro drug assessments often gauge effects through cell viability after exposure. The 2026 review characterizes such methods as commonly time-consuming and limited to endpoint detection; that is the review’s framing, not a claim that every conventional assay shares those limitations. Electrochemical monitoring may instead capture changes over time, but real-time measurement is a potential advantage described in the literature, not a performance guarantee for every platform.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Cell behavior: changes associated with proliferation, adhesion or detachment.
- Local chemistry: oxygen, pH, glucose, lactate and hydrogen peroxide in the extracellular environment.
- 3D-model behavior: intercellular ionic-gap behavior in models such as spheroids.
These signals provide different kinds of evidence; for example, a change in an extracellular metabolite is not interchangeable with a cell-adhesion measurement. Results must be interpreted in light of the model and marker, rather than treated as a direct measure of drug effectiveness in a person.
How do the methods differ?
Studies use different measurement approaches to examine cell-level responses, molecular effects or interactions between a drug and a target. A 2020 review of label-free bioelectrochemical methods discusses approaches that can investigate anticancer drug effects at a molecular level (Label-Free Bioelectrochemical Methods for Evaluation of Anticancer Drug Effects at a Molecular Level).

| Approach | What it can examine | Reader’s interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Impedance-based measurement | Electrical changes associated with cells or their environment | A proxy for cell behavior; its interpretation depends on the model and sensor design. |
| Other electrochemical sensing | Extracellular signals such as oxygen, pH, glucose, lactate or hydrogen peroxide | Tracks local chemical changes, not clinical benefit by itself. |
| Solid-supported membrane techniques | Membrane transport and related molecular effects | Can help examine drug effects on membrane processes. |
| DNA-based electrochemical sensors | Nucleic acids or drug-target interactions | Provides a molecular-level readout rather than a whole-patient response. |
The 2020 review discusses label-free methods including impedance, solid-supported membrane techniques and DNA-based electrochemical sensors. The methods are not one standardized assay: they address different biological questions and cannot be assumed to share a protocol or decision threshold.
How is susceptibility testing different from drug analysis?
Susceptibility testing asks whether a biological model responds to drug exposure. Drug analysis asks how much of a chemical is present in a sample. The two uses can involve related sensor technology, but their results answer distinct questions.

Reviews of electrochemical sensors for antineoplastic drugs describe analytical detection and quantification, including sensor design, analytical performance, limits of detection and linear ranges. These methods may support analysis of drugs in water or biological specimens; detecting a drug in a sample does not establish that a cell model is susceptible to it (Lima et al., 2018; Hasanova, Gumus and Zor, 2026 issue; Qureshi et al., first published November 18, 2024).
What should readers look for when judging a study?
A useful comparison starts with what was tested and what the sensor actually measured. Check these details before comparing reported results:

- Biological model: Was the study conducted in a 2D culture, a 3D spheroid or an organ-on-a-chip system?
- Measured signal: Was the readout cell behavior, ionic-gap behavior or an extracellular chemical marker?
- Measurement approach: Did the study use impedance, another electrochemical sensor or molecular recognition such as a DNA-based sensor?
- Timing: Was the result an endpoint measurement or longitudinal monitoring? A real-time readout is not automatically more predictive.
- Purpose: Was the experiment testing a biological response or quantifying the drug itself?
- Validation: What evidence supports reproducibility, throughput and translation beyond the experimental model?
Can these tests guide treatment in routine care?
The 2026 review presents electrochemical platforms as promising research methods while identifying a translational gap and ongoing development needs. The available sources do not establish a standardized protocol, a clinically accepted decision threshold or routine-care status for electrochemical anticancer drug susceptibility testing. They also do not validate these research readouts as predictors of an individual patient’s response. A result from a cell model should therefore be understood as experimental evidence, not as a treatment recommendation.
