The approach, reported by researchers at Queen’s University Belfast, is a possible way to clean certain tarnished metal surfaces—not proof that a catalyst can remove every form of rust or corrosion.
What the researchers demonstrated
Andrew Mills and David Hazafy noticed that tarnish diminished while they were preparing TiO2 photocatalyst films on stainless steel for a water-splitting project. They investigated the effect as a method for cleaning tarnished metals. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s 2011 account describes a stainless-steel sample with a bronze-colored oxide coating: after ultraviolet irradiation, the treated area was rinsed with water, removing the ink and revealing the cleaned region. The result is specifically about a tarnish-like oxide layer on stainless steel. It does not establish effectiveness on ordinary rust, other corrosion products, or every metal surface.

When ultraviolet light reaches titanium dioxide, it generates electrons and positively charged holes. These can recombine, or they can participate in reactions at the material’s surface. An electron-donating substance such as glycerol or ethanol consumes holes, leaving electrons available to react with metal oxides.

- Cleans, polishes & protects stainless steel: Our stainless steel cleaner for appliances removes fingerprints, grease, residue, and water spots. Weiman appliance wipes leave a streak-free shine and a protective barrier that helps prevent future smudges.
- Safe for all stainless steel finishes: This stainless steel cleaning cloth & wipes kit is safe for all stainless steel finishes, including black stainless surfaces. Our stainless steel polish & cleaner a non-abrasive formula that doesn't scratch or dull. Does not repair existing scratches.
- For indoor & outdoor stainless steel: Our stainless steel wipes & cloth kit is ideal for stainless steel refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, cooktop, sinks, range hoods, trash cans, and outdoor stainless steel grills. This stainless steel kitchen sink cleaner is a great choice for both inside appliances & outdoor grill exteriors.
- Easy, no-rinse application: Wipe in the direction of the metal grain, then buff with the included stainless steel cleaner cloth for a streak-free shine.
The ink described in the account combined TiO2 powder with glycerol and hydroxyethyl cellulose, which acted as a binder. The ink was applied to the metal and irradiated; water rinsing then washed away the formulation after treatment. The account does not specify a wavelength, exposure time, or a consumer-ready set of operating instructions.
Why an ink mattered
The researchers had previously used a gel-film arrangement that required an oxygen-free environment. Atmospheric oxygen competed with the metal oxides for the light-generated electrons, making the intended reaction harder to achieve. The team developed an ink that dried into a film with more surface area, which the RSC account presents as a practical improvement to the experimental approach.

How it differs from conventional oxide removal
The 2011 account contrasts the photocatalyst method with then-current use of strong acids and chelating agents to remove oxides. The approaches involve different conditions: this demonstration used UV illumination, a TiO2-based ink, and a rinse, while the earlier gel setup also required oxygen-free conditions. That historical comparison does not show that the ink is a direct replacement for present-day industrial cleaning or corrosion-control methods.
What the report does—and does not—establish
- Established: a laboratory demonstration removing a bronze-colored oxide coating from a stainless-steel sample after UV exposure and rinsing.
- Not established: broad effectiveness across corrosion types, performance measurements suitable for predicting field results, industrial adoption, or current commercial availability.
- Potential application: the RSC account mentions stainless-steel pipework, including in the nuclear industry, as a possible area of relevance—not a confirmed deployment.
The RSC account also repeats a claim that stainless-steel corrosion cost UK industry around 4% of gross national product each year. That is a historical figure attributed to the 2011 report, not a current estimate.
