What “cheats” mean in Unpacking
The official Unpacking site describes it as “A zen puzzle game about the familiar experience of pulling possessions out of boxes and fitting them into a new home.” The story unfolds as belongings move into successive homes; what the character keeps or leaves behind helps tell that story. Steam likewise presents it as a single-player puzzle and home-decoration game, not a game built around speed or scores.

Steam’s listing says there are no timers, meters, or scores. That makes the most useful help observational: look for a place that suits an object’s likely purpose and the room’s available storage, rather than rushing to unpack. The campaign comprises eight house moves. Years from 1997 through 2018 appear in chapter and community materials; these are moves or chapters, not a claim that there are eight individual rooms.

When a placement seems impossible, pause and scan the room before trying every surface at random. This is practical advice drawn from the game’s exploratory, meditative design, not a tested shortcut.

- Check the room’s affordances. Note open surfaces, shelves, closets, drawers, and available wall space. Consider what the item is for and which room would normally hold it.
- Look for unused storage. A shelf or drawer that appears incidental may be the intended home for a smaller object. Inspect the room’s nooks and crannies instead of assuming every item belongs in plain sight.
- Use the placement feedback. If the game marks an item as invalid, try another surface or location rather than forcing it into that spot.
- Separate a placement puzzle from an optional secret. An item that must be placed to finish a move is different from an arrangement or interaction done to earn an achievement.
If the invalid-item outline is difficult to see, the official site says its colour can be changed. Adjusting that feedback may make it easier to tell whether an item can be placed in a location.
Chapter-by-chapter item help
Steam Community discussions include questions phrased as “Where does this go?” and reports such as “Can’t find a spot for the diploma.” The answer depends on the move and the item; there is no single universal placement rule. Use the displayed year or chapter to match a hint to the move you are playing.

- Solve the cube.
- Turn on a music player.
Spoiler: later placement and arrangement actions
- Rotate a mannequin until it dabs.
- Put a cookie jar out of reach.
- Place an electronic item somewhere dangerous, such as in a bath.
Spoiler: other documented achievement tasks
- Group coffee-making equipment.
- Arrange underwear in one drawer.
- Solve an equation with fridge magnets.
- Place two plush toys together.
- Build a tower of blocks.
These are examples of optional achievement-oriented interactions, not a complete item-by-item walkthrough of every move. If a specific object is blocking progress, first confirm the chapter shown in the game and then look for a chapter-matched hint; an answer from another move may not apply.

Campaign completion and achievements are different goals
Steam lists 25 achievements. Some are tied to progressing through chapters, while others ask for optional interactions or particular arrangements. You can pursue the story and complete the moves without treating every secret as a requirement; seeking every achievement is a separate goal. Achievement presentation can differ by platform, so the documented tasks are best treated as walkthrough guidance rather than a guarantee about every platform’s interface.
