It often favors wetter conditions in parts of the eastern Pacific and the Americas, and drier conditions in Australia and Indonesia—but effects depend on season and location, and are never guaranteed.
What El Niño changes in the atmosphere
El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a coupled ocean–atmosphere pattern in the tropical Pacific. It is not simply a patch of unusually warm water: the atmosphere also has to respond.

- Sea-surface temperatures rise in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific.
- The trade winds weaken, allowing warm surface water and the strongest tropical rain and rising air to shift east.
- That relocated heat and moisture alter tropical atmospheric circulation.
- Circulation changes can influence weather far from the tropical Pacific, changing the likelihood of regional wet or dry conditions.
As NOAA puts it, “In addition, the atmosphere must respond to the warming water by weakening the prevailing winds, known as the trade winds, and also shift patterns of tropical rainfall eastward.” (NOAA, Understanding El Niño & ENSO.)
Where rainfall tends to increase or decrease
The clearest immediate shift is across the tropical Pacific: rainfall tends to increase in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific as the warm water and convection move east. NOAA also describes commonly associated drier-than-normal conditions in northern Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines. These are recurring tendencies, not predictions for every place or event. How the pattern varies by season
El Niño’s remote effects are often described as teleconnections: changes in tropical circulation that influence weather elsewhere. The rainfall pattern is seasonal, so the following examples refer to different parts of the year rather than a single simultaneous map.
| Season | Regions where wetter conditions are favored |
|---|---|
| December–February | Coastal Ecuador and northwestern Peru; southern Brazil and central Argentina; equatorial eastern Africa |
| June–August | Intermountain regions of the United States; central Chile |
In U.S. winter, NOAA also describes a stronger Pacific jet stream and an increased tendency toward wetter conditions across the southern United States. That broad tendency is not a local forecast. For the mapped precipitation patterns and their seasonal context, see the NOAA Climate Prediction Center’s El Niño temperature and precipitation patterns.

Why a strong El Niño does not guarantee local rain
El Niño shifts probabilities, not outcomes. Its rainfall signal is strongest in the tropics; effects elsewhere depend on the season and how circulation changes connect to local weather. Event strength alone does not determine the size of a regional impact. Other climate drivers also shape seasonal outlooks, so a global El Niño pattern cannot establish whether a particular town will be wet or dry.
When comparing outlooks, match the region and season, the rainfall category or anomaly, the ENSO phase and strength, and the other climate drivers included. Maps for different seasons should not be treated as though they describe the same time.

What the latest dated outlook said
The World Meteorological Organization’s El Niño/La Niña Update (August 2026), published 3 September 2026, reported that El Niño was firmly established as of mid-August. It forecast nearly 100% likelihood of persistence through September–November 2026 and December 2026–February 2027, and expected further strengthening. WMO said a very strong event could raise the likelihood of significant rainfall and temperature shifts, while cautioning that strength does not translate directly into the magnitude of regional impacts. This is the dated forecast, not confirmation of conditions after its publication. (WMO update.)
WMO’s overview also noted that its September 2026 global seasonal update expected a strong El Niño to influence climate patterns through September–November 2026. For planning, consult the current national or regional outlook for the relevant place and season: those forecasts account for other climate drivers alongside ENSO. (WMO overview.)

How NOAA describes an El Niño threshold
NOAA’s explainer describes a diagnostic convention in which Niño 3.4 sea-surface temperatures are at least 0.5°C above normal for at least five consecutive overlapping three-month periods, together with an atmospheric response. This is NOAA’s stated convention on that page, not a universal operational definition: NOAA notes a 2026 transition to RONI for operational use. (NOAA, Understanding El Niño & ENSO.)
