Gemini in Android Auto can handle supported voice tasks and conversational questions, but Google does not promise an answer to every question or action. A problem may come from device or regional availability, an unsupported app action, voice recognition, or a safety restriction while the car is moving. Even when Gemini responds, Google warns that its answers can be inaccurate and should not be used for critical or safety-related decisions while driving.
What Gemini can do in Android Auto
Google describes Gemini in Android Auto as supporting tasks such as calling and messaging, finding places and navigating, controlling media, chatting, and asking general questions. Its examples include requests that combine a destination with nearby places, as well as conversations about travel, entertainment, or topics such as music and quantum theory. These examples describe intended uses, not a guarantee that every request will work or that every answer will be correct. See Google’s Gemini in-car help.
There is no published percentage showing how many questions Gemini answers, declines, or fails to understand. Google’s live help pages also do not provide an exhaustive list of unsupported questions or a complete explanation of refusal behavior. The most useful first step is to identify whether the problem is availability, the requested action, voice recognition, or an in-motion restriction.

- An Android phone running Android 11 or later, with at least 2 GB of RAM.
- Gemini selected as the phone’s digital assistant.
- A vehicle that supports Android Auto.
- A supported language and region. Google says Gemini and Android Auto are not available in every language or region.
These requirements are listed in Google’s Gemini in-car help. If Gemini cannot be launched at all, check eligibility before troubleshooting the wording of a particular question.
Make sure Android Auto is listening
A request that seems unanswered may not have been heard. Google lists three ways to start a Gemini session: say “Hey Google,” tap the microphone on the car display, or press and hold the steering-wheel voice-command button if the vehicle supports it. “Hey Google” requires Voice Match and the relevant setting to be enabled. See Google’s instructions for talking to Gemini or Google Assistant.

If voice commands are unreliable, Google recommends holding the steering-wheel button until the tone, then speaking after the tone. Google describes the tone as confirmation that Android Auto is listening. Reduce surrounding noise, and if you use an aftermarket receiver, check that its microphone works. These steps come from Google’s voice-command troubleshooting guide.
Some requests depend on compatible apps
Gemini’s ability to carry out an action depends partly on the Android Auto app or integration involved. Messaging uses SMS or messaging apps compatible with Android Auto; navigation uses Google Maps or another compatible navigation app. Google’s guides explain these supported paths for messaging and navigation.

That does not establish that every third-party app, transaction, or app-specific command is available through Gemini in the car. If Gemini handles a general question but cannot act in a particular app, check whether that app and the requested feature are supported in Android Auto rather than assuming Gemini rejects the subject itself.

Android Auto applies safety lockouts to certain activities. Google gives typing a message while moving and scrolling large lists as examples. Navigation destination typing on the car display also requires the vehicle to be in Park. A task may therefore be available in principle but unavailable through that interaction while the car is moving. See Google’s Android Auto accessibility and safety information and its navigation guidance.

Troubleshoot a question that gets no useful response
- Check eligibility. Confirm the Android version and memory requirements, that Gemini is the selected digital assistant, and that the vehicle supports Android Auto. Check that your language and region are supported.
- Start a session deliberately. Use “Hey Google,” the display microphone, or the supported steering-wheel button. For “Hey Google,” check Voice Match and the setting; with the steering-wheel button, hold it until the tone.
- Try the request again after the listening tone. Speak clearly, reduce cabin noise, and check an aftermarket receiver’s microphone if applicable.
- Check the app dependency. Verify that the messaging, navigation, or media app and the specific action work with Android Auto.
- Park before using restricted controls. If the request requires typing on the display or another limited interaction, stop safely and put the vehicle in Park first.
Do not rely on Gemini for safety-critical answers
Google says Gemini in the car is new and evolving, can hallucinate or present inaccurate information as fact, and should not be relied on for critical or safety-related matters while operating a vehicle. Treat a fluent response as something that may need verification, not as dependable guidance for emergencies, driving decisions, or other safety-critical situations. The warning appears in Google’s Gemini in-car help.
