Shuffle usually rearranges the tracks already in a playlist into a new listening order. It does not promise an even rotation: a truly random order can put a familiar song near the beginning or place two tracks by the same artist close together. Spotify says its Standard Shuffle orders tracks using random values, while its Fewer Repeats mode favors a fresher order based on recent listening. Smart Shuffle is different again: it can add personalized recommendations to a session. Apple documents its shuffle controls, but not the internal method Apple Music uses to pick a song order.
What does shuffle do?
In its basic form, shuffle changes the order of a playlist’s existing tracks. The result is a sequence for playback, not a guarantee that every song will be heard once before any familiar track returns across later sessions.

Three behaviors are worth separating: a random order of existing tracks, a freshness preference that tries to limit recent repeats, and recommendations that add music beyond the playlist. An app’s shuffle button may refer to different behaviors depending on the mode selected.

How Spotify says its shuffle modes work
Standard Shuffle: reorder tracks using random values
Spotify Engineering says Standard Shuffle uses the Mersenne Twister random-number generator. Spotify uses a random seed to assign each song a value, then sorts the playlist by those values. Standard Shuffle does not take recent plays into account, so a track can appear again soon in a later shuffle session. Spotify Engineering’s explanation describes this as the standard approach.

Fewer Repeats: favor a fresher candidate order
Spotify says Fewer Repeats generates multiple random sequences, scores them for freshness, and chooses the sequence with the highest freshness score. Recently played songs lose more points when they appear near the beginning of a candidate sequence. Spotify says its freshness check considers recent listening both within the playlist and across Spotify. This can reduce repeats, but it does not guarantee that a song will not return.
Spotify Engineering describes the change this way: “We’re not changing the math behind randomness; instead, we’re simply choosing the freshest sounding one.” The explanation was published November 13, 2025, by Staff Engineer Ludvig Borgne and Senior Product Manager Chidem Sahiner.

Smart Shuffle: add recommendations
Smart Shuffle is not simply a different order of the same playlist. Spotify describes it as a way to refresh playlists with personalized recommendations that fit their vibe, and recommendations are marked in the interface. Spotify’s March 8, 2023 launch announcement said that, at launch, playlists with more than 15 songs would get one recommendation for every three tracks. That is a dated launch-era description, not a guarantee of current behavior. Spotify’s announcement provides that historical detail.

Randomness does not mean evenly spaced variety over a short run. A random order can place a familiar track early, or put songs by the same artist close together. Listeners may expect shuffle to rotate through a playlist evenly and avoid recent tracks; those expectations are different from a basic random ordering.

Spotify’s explanation of Fewer Repeats addresses that difference by selecting among random candidate orders using recent-play information. It is a freshness preference layered on the candidate sequences, not proof that randomness itself prevents repeats. This account applies to Spotify’s described feature, not to every music service.
What Apple documents about shuffle
Apple’s MusicKit developer documentation defines shuffle modes as off and songs, while its iPhone user guide explains how to use shuffle and repeat controls in Music. Those sources establish the user-facing control and API states, but they do not disclose Apple Music’s internal randomization method. They also do not establish whether Apple weighs popularity, recency, or listening history when choosing an order. How to tell what a shuffle mode will change
When an app offers multiple shuffle choices, check what happens to the queue rather than assuming every mode means the same thing:
- Playlist contents: Does playback use only the tracks already selected, or can recommendations be added?
- Recent listening: Does the mode use recent plays to favor tracks heard less recently?
- Your control: Can you select a specific mode, remove a recommendation, or return to the original playlist?
Spotify documents Standard Shuffle, Fewer Repeats, and Smart Shuffle as distinct behaviors. Apple’s cited documentation supports comparison of the controls, but not a like-for-like comparison of the two services’ algorithms.
