Copy and Paste Not Working? How to Fix It on Windows, Mac, and Android

Find whether copy and paste is failing in one app, on one device, or between devices, then follow the relevant Windows, browser, Apple, Phone Link, or Office fix.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First, copy a short piece of plain text and paste it into a different app. Then try the app’s menu instead of the keyboard shortcut, or vice versa. If copy and paste works in other apps but not one, focus on that app or its content; if it works on the same device but not between devices, troubleshoot the sync feature. These checks help identify where the failure is happening, but no single fix applies to every case.

Start by finding where copy and paste fails

  1. Copy a short, ordinary text phrase and paste it into a second app with an editable text field.
  2. Try both keyboard shortcuts and the app’s menu or right-click command. On Windows, use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V; on a Mac, use Command+C and Command+V.
  3. Test text before testing an image or file. If only one kind of content fails, the issue may be specific to that content or the app.
  4. Compare copying within one device with copying between devices. Cross-device clipboard features have their own setup requirements.

If the text pastes in another app, the system clipboard is working in that test; look at the original app, destination field, browser, or content restrictions. If menu commands work but shortcuts do not, check keyboard input or shortcut remapping. If shortcuts work but a web app’s menu commands do not, browser clipboard security may be involved.

Fix the Windows clipboard

Check clipboard history and sync separately

Press Windows key + V to open clipboard history. If it is off, the panel offers a way to turn it on. You can also open Settings > System > Clipboard and review clipboard history and cross-device sync as separate settings. Local copy and paste can work even when cross-device sync is off. Microsoft’s instructions for using the Windows clipboard cover viewing and clearing history from Settings or the history panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Know what clipboard history keeps

Microsoft currently documents a limit of 25 history entries and 4 MB per item. A Windows restart clears clipboard history except for pinned items. These are limits for the Windows clipboard history feature; they do not mean every clipboard problem has the same cause.

When copy and paste fails in a browser document

In Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides opened in a browser, try the keyboard shortcuts first: Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V on Windows or ChromeOS, or Command+C and Command+V on Mac. Google explains that browser security can prevent web apps from accessing the system clipboard through menu commands.

In Chrome, Google also recommends trying the right-click menu or the toolbar’s Edit menu. For menu access, Google specifies the Docs Offline extension. See Google’s copy-and-paste instructions for supported methods.

Troubleshoot Android-to-Windows copying with Phone Link

Phone Link cross-device copy and paste is limited to Surface Duo and select Android models from Samsung, HONOR, OPPO, ASUS, vivo, and Xiaomi. It transfers text and images, not every kind of file. Microsoft says images larger than 1 MB are resized, and content cannot be copied from Secure Folder onto the PC.

  1. In Phone Link, turn on Cross-device copy and paste.
  2. If a large text selection fails, try copying a smaller section.
  3. If the feature is enabled but still fails, close and reopen Phone Link on the PC and Link to Windows on Android.
  4. Restart the PC only as a last resort.

Mobile-data use depends on the configured sync setting. Check Microsoft’s Phone Link cross-device transfer guidance for the feature’s setup and limits.

Retrieve copied items in Microsoft Office

If you copied something earlier in an Office app and then replaced it on the clipboard, the Office Clipboard task pane may still have it. Open the Home tab, select the Clipboard dialog launcher, then double-click an item in the task pane to paste it. Microsoft says the pane holds up to 24 items; copying a twenty-fifth removes the oldest. The standard shortcuts are Ctrl+X to cut, Ctrl+C to copy, and Ctrl+V to paste. See Microsoft’s Office Clipboard instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the problem persists

  • If copying fails in multiple apps on one device, focus on that device’s keyboard input or local clipboard rather than a single document.
  • If only one app or destination field fails, test another field and review that app’s restrictions or settings.
  • If local copying works but another device does not receive the content, verify the relevant cross-device feature and its requirements.
  • If only shortcuts fail while menus work, investigate keyboard input or shortcut remapping; if only web-app menus fail, try the browser-supported alternatives above.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 users should not assume they still receive free Windows Update security fixes.
