An electric field can change how a ZIF-8 membrane separates gases—not by making it pass more gas, but by stiffening its structure so it distinguishes molecules more sharply. In a 2017 laboratory study, a 500 V/mm direct-current field reversibly switched the material into more rigid forms. Chemistry World reported a 33% improvement in separation of propene from propane, a result specific to the study rather than a guarantee for other membranes or operating conditions.
What does “switching on” a MOF mean?
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials made from metal nodes connected by organic linkers. The membrane in the study was ZIF-8, a zinc-based zeolitic imidazolate framework. Its linkers can move, making the framework flexible. That flexibility can make it harder for a membrane to distinguish molecules that are close in size.

Here, “switching on” describes changing the framework’s gas-sieving behavior, not powering an appliance or adding a chemical reagent. The electric field altered the material’s structure, reducing linker motion and making the lattice more rigid.

How did the electric-field treatment work?
In a 2017 Science study, Alexander Knebel and colleagues applied direct-current poling at 500 volts per millimeter to ZIF-8 membranes. The treatment reversibly switched the framework into polar polymorphs—different structural forms of the same material. X-ray diffraction and ab initio calculations supported the structural assignment. Dielectric spectroscopy, polarization measurements and deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance were used to examine lattice resonances and linker motion.

The effect involved a trade-off: stiffening reduced gas transport overall, while sharpening molecular sieving. The result is best understood as a way to tune which molecules pass relative to others, not as a method for increasing total gas throughput.
What gases did the study focus on?
The highlighted pair was propene, also called propylene, and propane. Chemistry World reported in 2017 that the molecules differ in size by about 0.3 Å and that electrically stiffened ZIF-8 improved their separation by 33%. Those figures describe the report’s account of this specific result; they should not be generalized to every ZIF-8 membrane, gas mixture or operating condition.

The close size of the molecules helps explain why sharper sieving matters. The article also noted that propene and propane separation is commonly carried out by low-temperature distillation. The membrane finding does not establish that it can replace that industrial process.

Does this mean the membrane is ready for industrial use?
No such conclusion follows from the reported research. The evidence describes laboratory membranes and a material-level change in gas transport. The sources do not establish industrial trials, scale-up, long-term durability, process economics, lifecycle performance or commercial availability. Chemistry World reported in 2017 that a patent application had been filed and that the team was pursuing further experiments; that historical report does not establish the patent’s current status or commercialization.
