Microsoft lists 4GB as Windows 11’s minimum memory requirement, recommends 8GB for keeping a device running long term, and says 16GB or more may suit photo and video editing or other high-performance projects. The right amount depends on what you do at the same time—not just whether Windows installs.
What Microsoft’s requirements actually mean
Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements list 4GB of RAM as the minimum. That answers whether a device meets this memory requirement; it does not promise that every application or feature will feel comfortable at that capacity.

Microsoft’s separate memory guidance recommends 8GB for keeping a computer running long term. It says 16GB or more might be suitable for photo or video editing and work that needs high performance. These are general recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular app will run well at a given capacity.
When 8GB is likely to be enough
For light use—such as browsing, writing documents, and streaming—8GB can be workable, especially when you are not keeping many demanding apps open together. The experience also depends on the computer’s other hardware and what is running in the background.

- Low-profile heat spreader design
- Cost-efficient, high-performance DDR4 upgrade
- Intel XMP-ready
- Ready for AMD Ryzen
- Plug N Play functionality
As you add browser tabs, apps, and background software, Windows has less memory available for switching among tasks. If you regularly edit photos or video, or run other high-performance workloads, Microsoft’s guidance points toward 16GB or more rather than treating 8GB as a comfortable target.
What the two XPS memory readings show
A 2026 Yahoo Tech article matching this topic reported Task Manager readings during passive desktop use: 5.7GB in use and 1.9GB available on an 8GB XPS, compared with 6.8GB in use and 8.7GB available on a 16GB XPS. The figures describe that article’s setup, not a universal Windows 11 baseline or a benchmark of how quickly either laptop performs. The article page could not be accessed directly, so its full procedure and context could not be independently audited. Yahoo Tech’s article

The useful takeaway is limited but practical: a passive desktop reading does not tell you how much memory your own workload will need. App switching and heavier multitasking can change the situation. RTINGS says the 8GB configuration of the XPS 13 (2026) may constrain heavier multitasking, which is consistent with treating 8GB as a workable entry point rather than ample headroom for every task. RTINGS’ XPS 13 (2026) review
Why the XPS upgrade decision matters
RTINGS reports that the XPS 13 (2026) is offered with 8GB or 16GB of RAM and that its memory is soldered, with no open upgrade slots. That means buyers should choose capacity before purchase rather than assume they can add RAM later. Model configurations and retail availability can change, so check the exact laptop SKU before ordering.

No current price difference between the configurations is established here. Compare the actual listings for the precise models you are considering; the value of paying more for 16GB depends on your workload and how long you plan to keep the laptop.
How to decide between 8GB and 16GB
- Choose 8GB if: your use is mostly light browsing, documents, and streaming, and you are comfortable managing how many apps and tabs are open.
- Lean toward 16GB or more if: you edit photos or video, run high-performance projects, or often multitask heavily.
- Check upgradeability before buying: if RAM is soldered and there are no open slots, the original configuration may be the one you keep.
- Check the exact configuration: a product family can have multiple memory options, and specifications should be verified for the specific SKU and current listing.
Windows optimization plans are not a substitute for choosing capacity
In an interview reported by Windows Central on August 3, 2026, Microsoft Corporate Vice President of Design and Research for Windows Marcus Ash described efforts to reduce Windows’ memory footprint: “We get teams together across Microsoft, we get our own team together, we instrument the various customer jobs that people want to run, and then we’re relentless at: how do we reduce the memory footprint?” Windows Central also reported Microsoft’s target to begin shipping memory and performance optimizations before the end of 2026. That was a reported target, not confirmation that a particular PC already has those changes. Windows Central’s report
