Recent tests are encouraging, but they do not establish a ready-to-buy product or performance in every machine.
What are wuhanic and nebraskanic acids?
Wuhanic acid and nebraskanic acid are unusual 24-carbon dihydroxy fatty acids found in the seed oil of Chinese violet cress (Orychophragmus violaceus), a member of the mustard family. “Dihydroxy” means each molecule has two hydroxyl groups; the 2018 discovery report places them at positions 7 and 18 on the carbon chain. Researchers identified the structures using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance after thin-layer chromatography failed to reveal the acids as expected. Their significance is not just that they are rare. A 2018 perspective by Sten Stymne and John Ohlrogge notes that more than 450 distinct fatty acid structures have been described in plants, and calls the route that produces these two acids an unprecedented form of “discontinuous elongation.” Rather than extending the fatty-acid chain through the usual sequence, the plant diverts an intermediate from the standard elongation cycle. In 2018, the oil attracted attention as a potential high-performance natural lubricant and was compared favorably with castor oil. That early coverage said the two unusual fatty acids could account for up to half of the seed oil by weight. It also reported that the plant was not then suitable as an oil crop and that experimental transfer of the pathway into other seeds had achieved only about 1% by weight. Those figures describe the state of research reported in 2018, not present-day crop yields. The contemporaneous account reported both the promise and the cultivation challenge.

A 2019 peer-reviewed study sharpened the explanation: it attributed the oil’s excellent lubricity to naturally occurring oligomeric estolides, rather than to hydroxy-fatty-acid content alone. Estolides are linked fatty-acid structures; in this case, the oil’s native composition and the larger molecules it contains matter to the observed lubrication behavior. The finding cautions against treating wuhanic and nebraskanic acids as standalone lubricant ingredients proven to deliver the same result. The 2019 study discusses the oil’s lubricity and estolides.
What do recent laboratory measurements show?
A 2025 characterization abstract reports that its tested Chinese violet cress oil contained 50.5 wt% wuhanic acid and 9.9 wt% nebraskanic acid, with a pour point of −18 °C. It also reports that, in HFRR testing, the sample produced lower average wear scars and coefficients of friction than petroleum-based PAO-6. The USDA Agricultural Research Service record for closely matching work reports 62.7% total hydroxy fatty acids and similar wear-scar findings. These are measurements on characterized samples under the studies’ test conditions, not guarantees for other batches or formulations. HFRR is a laboratory method for comparing friction and wear under specified conditions. A favorable result versus PAO-6 is evidence worth investigating, but it does not certify the oil for an engine, gearbox, or other application. A lubricant must also meet the relevant operating, durability, compatibility, and performance requirements for its intended equipment. The cited evidence does not establish a universal ranking against castor oil, lesquerella oil, or petroleum lubricants: studies use different materials and experimental setups.

How far is the oil from commercial use?
Researchers have continued to characterize the seed oil and estolides derived from it. A 2024 USDA ARS conference abstract compares physical and lubrication properties with castor and lesquerella oils and presents Chinese violet cress as a potential feedstock for bio-based products on marginal land. This is a research prospect, not confirmation of established cultivation or commercial supply. The USDA ARS abstract describes that work.

The available sources document laboratory studies and patent-related activity, but do not verify commercial-scale production or an established retail lubricant made from this plant oil. Nor do they establish broad real-world durability, fuel-economy effects, or lifecycle environmental benefits. The research supports further development; it does not yet answer whether the oil can be produced reliably and economically at scale or qualify for a particular industrial use. The USDA ARS publication record describes characterization work rather than a retail product.

What the findings mean
- Novel chemistry: The seed oil contains two rare C24 dihydroxy fatty acids made through an unusual biosynthetic route.
- Lubricity is a property of the oil’s composition: The 2019 study points to native oligomeric estolides, not the unusual fatty acids alone, as the key to the superior lubricity observed.
- Promising but bounded tests: Recent HFRR results and cold-flow measurements support further study, but do not establish performance in every lubricant application.
- Commercial readiness remains unproven: The available evidence does not confirm an established product or scaled supply.
