AI upscaling lets a game render an image at a lower internal resolution, then reconstructs it for a higher-resolution display output. On PS5 Pro, Sony calls its system PSSR; Sony has also announced a separate, performance-focused system called QSSR for selected games on the base PS5. Neither feature is universal, and the image and performance results depend on each game’s implementation.
How does AI upscaling work on the PS5?
A game does not always render every pixel at the resolution sent to your TV. It can render internally at a lower resolution, then use an upscaler to reconstruct an image for a higher-resolution output. Sony describes PSSR as an AI library that analyzes game images frame by frame, pixel by pixel, while upscaling them. The intended result is more detail and image stability than conventional approaches, according to Sony.

In practical terms, the upscaler works from the rendered image to produce a sharper-looking output. Sony’s public explanation establishes this high-level process, but does not disclose the complete reconstruction algorithm, training data, neural-network layers, or all information the system uses at runtime. It would be speculation to assign it particular internal buffers or processing stages based on the available public descriptions.
What are PSSR and QSSR?
| Feature | Console | What Sony says | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) | PS5 Pro | AI-driven, machine-learning upscaling. Sony says it analyzes images pixel by pixel. Sony positions it as the higher-end PS5 Pro feature. | Supported games only; support and results are title-specific. |
| Upgraded PSSR | PS5 Pro | A newer PSSR experience with more precise reconstruction, clearer fine detail, and improved image and motion stability. Sony says it gives developers more flexibility to balance performance and fidelity. | Supported games; availability can depend on system software and game updates. |
| QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution) | Base PS5 | A performance-focused tier using a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation for PS5. Sony says PSSR remains the “gold standard” on PS5 Pro. | Selected games. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as its first supported games in its announcement. |
These are distinct Sony platform features, not interchangeable names for one identical implementation. QSSR’s announcement does not mean the full PS5 Pro PSSR implementation runs on the base PS5.

Does PSSR render a game natively at 4K?
Not necessarily. PSSR is an upscaler, so a game can render below its final output resolution and reconstruct the image for display. One documented example comes from Naughty Dog: the PS5 Pro modes for The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II Remastered used 1440p internal rendering, upscaled to 4K, while targeting 60 fps. That configuration applies to those specific modes; it is not a universal PSSR setting or a promise about other games.
To understand a particular title, look at its specific graphics modes and compare internal rendering resolution, output resolution, frame-rate target, and image quality. The name of the upscaler alone does not establish those settings.

What can AI upscaling improve, and what varies by game?
Sony’s stated goals for PSSR include fine-detail clarity and image stability; its upgraded version is also described as improving motion stability and reconstruction precision. Those are platform-level aims, not a guarantee that every scene or game will look better in the same way. Sony’s PS5 Pro materials explicitly say results vary by title.

Does AI upscaling work on the original PS5, or only PS5 Pro?
PSSR is associated with PS5 Pro. Sony has announced QSSR as a separate AI-upscaling tier for selected games on the base PS5, initially naming Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. That does not make either technology available in every PS5 game: support is title-specific, and game updates may affect availability. Sony maintains a current list of games supporting enhanced PSSR on its PS5 Pro page; check the relevant game’s information for its available modes.

Why the exact result is hard to predict from the feature name
- Support is selective: A console feature does not mean every game uses it.
- Modes differ: Developers can tune rendering and performance choices for each title.
- Upscaling is not native rendering: A higher output resolution can be reconstructed from a lower internal resolution.
- The technical description has limits: Sony describes PSSR’s frame and pixel analysis at a high level, but has not publicly detailed the full algorithm in the cited materials.
