To use a LiteLLM model in Cursor, point Cursor’s OpenAI-compatible base URL at your reachable LiteLLM Proxy with /cursor at the end, enter a LiteLLM virtual key, and add the public model name configured in LiteLLM. The documented custom-key workflow supports Ask and Plan; it does not route every Cursor feature through LiteLLM.
Before you start
LiteLLM Proxy is a self-hosted, OpenAI-compatible gateway: Cursor sends requests to the proxy, which forwards them to the upstream provider and model you have configured. LiteLLM’s Getting Started documentation describes the general compatibility design; that does not mean every Cursor feature uses the proxy.

- A LiteLLM Proxy that is running and reachable from the computer running Cursor.
- A public model name configured in LiteLLM’s
model_list, mapped to the actual upstream provider, model or deployment, and provider credentials. - A LiteLLM virtual key permitted to use that public model.
LiteLLM’s setup example uses port 4000 and an Azure deployment, but those are example values, not requirements for every configuration. Use your own provider, model, proxy address, and credentials.

Set up the Cursor connection
- Check the proxy. Confirm your LiteLLM Proxy is running and that its address is reachable from your machine. The proxy must have the model configured under a public name that you can enter in Cursor.
- Create a virtual key. In the LiteLLM interface, go to Virtual Keys → + Create New Key. Select the model the key is allowed to access, create the key, and copy it. LiteLLM documents virtual keys as a way to control model access and track spend. See its virtual key documentation.
- Set Cursor’s base URL. In Cursor, open Settings → Models, enable Override OpenAI Base URL, and enter your proxy’s reachable base address followed by
/cursor. For example, if your proxy is hosted athttps://llm.example.net, enterhttps://llm.example.net/cursor. Replace the example hostname with your own; do not omit the suffix. - Enter the LiteLLM key. Paste the virtual key into Cursor’s OpenAI API Key field. Treat it like a password: do not put it in screenshots, source control, or public examples.
- Add the model in Cursor. Select + Add Custom Model and enter the public model name shown in LiteLLM’s Models + Endpoints view. Enable the model in Cursor so it can be selected.
- Send a small test in Ask mode. Select the custom model in Ask and submit a simple prompt. The cited LiteLLM integration guide documents this custom-key workflow for Ask and Plan, but says Agent mode is unsupported. Product behavior can change, so check the current LiteLLM Cursor integration guide if the mode behavior differs in your version.
What the connection does—and does not—cover
Cursor’s custom API key is not a switch that sends every AI feature through LiteLLM. Cursor’s API Keys documentation says custom keys work with standard chat models; specialized features such as Tab Completion continue to use Cursor’s built-in models. The LiteLLM guide also describes the custom-key workflow as available in Ask and Plan, not Agent. Plan accordingly if you need a particular feature or mode to use your proxy.

Fix common connection problems
Cursor gets no response
- Check that the URL in Override OpenAI Base URL ends in
/cursor. - Confirm the proxy is running and reachable from the machine running Cursor.
- Verify that the virtual key is allowed to access the selected model.
Cursor reports an authentication error
- Make sure the value in OpenAI API Key is the LiteLLM virtual key, not the upstream provider’s key.
- Check that the key was copied completely. The integration guide says the expected key prefix is
sk-. - If the key may have been exposed or is invalid, regenerate it in LiteLLM and update Cursor with the replacement.
The model is missing or unavailable
- Compare the name entered under + Add Custom Model with the public model name in LiteLLM’s Models + Endpoints view.
- Confirm the model is enabled in Cursor and that the virtual key has permission to use it.
- Check that the configured public model name maps to a valid upstream provider and model in LiteLLM.
Understand the routing boundary
With this setup, supported Cursor chat requests go to LiteLLM, and LiteLLM forwards them according to its model configuration. The virtual key controls which configured model the request may use. It does not make unsupported Cursor features compatible, nor does it establish that all traffic from Cursor is routed through your proxy.
