Choose CSS Grid when the layout depends on rows and columns together, or when items need to share aligned tracks. They are complementary tools: a page can use Grid for its structure and Flexbox to arrange controls inside one of its regions.
What is the real difference between Grid and Flexbox?
Flexbox lays out items in one dimension at a time: along a row or down a column. Grid controls two dimensions together, arranging items across rows and columns. MDN describes this as the basic distinction between the two layout methods in its guide to Grid’s relationship with other layout methods.

The difference is about the relationships your layout needs, not the size of the component. MDN cautions that there is no fixed rule that Flexbox is for small components and Grid is for large ones. A compact card layout may need Grid’s shared columns, while a large navigation region may be a simple Flexbox row.

Choose Flexbox when content should influence the layout
Flexbox is content-out: the items’ content and the available space help determine their sizes and how free space is distributed. It fits a group whose items should grow, shrink, or align along a single axis, such as a navigation list or a row of controls. These are examples of the one-dimensional model, not rules based on component size.

Choose Grid when tracks should define the layout
Grid is layout-in: you define rows and columns, then place items in that structure or let the browser auto-place them in cells. It suits major page regions, dashboards, or listings where the relationships between rows and columns matter together. MDN discusses these uses in its Grid layout guidance.
What happens when Flexbox items wrap?
Wrapped Flexbox items form separate lines, and each line distributes its items independently. That means wrapping does not create shared columns across lines. If a listing has several rows and you need items in the same column to line up, use Grid as the starting point rather than expecting wrapped Flexbox lines to share column widths. MDN explains this distinction in its guide to Flexbox’s relationship with other layout methods.

Which one is more responsive?
Neither method is universally more responsive. Flexbox can let items grow or shrink as space changes; Grid can adapt its tracks and can be combined with breakpoints. Choose according to how items should relate as the available space changes, not on the assumption that one method is inherently better for responsive design. See MDN’s Grid and other layout methods guidance for how Grid relates to other CSS layout approaches.

Can you use Grid and Flexbox together?
Yes. They are both part of CSS layout and can be nested. For example, use Grid to establish a page’s main regions, then use Flexbox inside a region to line up a group of buttons. This keeps each method focused on the relationship it handles best: Grid for two-dimensional structure, Flexbox for one-dimensional flow.

A quick decision guide
- Use Flexbox when the items should flow along one row or one column and their content and available space should influence sizing.
- Use Grid when you need deliberate control of rows and columns together, or alignment in shared tracks across multiple rows.
- Combine them when a two-dimensional structure contains a one-dimensional group.
