Affiliate marketing can help a business reach new audiences and track referrals, but it does not guarantee more sales or lower acquisition costs. It works best when an affiliate’s audience fits the offer, the program’s tracking and payment rules are clear, and the business can monitor promotions and disclosures.
How affiliate marketing works
A merchant sells a product or service. An affiliate promotes it to an audience, often using a tracked link. Sometimes an affiliate network connects merchants with marketers and helps track activity. Depending on the program, the merchant pays when a referral completes a qualifying action, such as a purchase.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The Federal Trade Commission’s affiliate marketing infographic illustrates the basic relationship: a promotion leads to a click and potentially a purchase, with tracking used to connect activity to payment. The specific actions that count and the way attribution works depend on the program’s terms.
Potential advantages
Payment can be tied to qualifying activity
A business can make compensation contingent on referrals or other defined actions rather than paying only for exposure. Tracking can make those referrals easier to attribute than a general impression, provided the program’s tracking and terms support that measurement. This structure does not prove that overall acquisition costs will be lower.

Partners can bring relevant audiences
Affiliates may already reach people who are interested in a business’s products or services. That can give a business access to an audience it might not reach through its own channels. The benefit depends on whether the audience actually matches the offer; a large audience alone does not establish that referrals will convert.
The channel has measurable industry scale, not guaranteed business results
The Performance Marketing Association’s 2025 US Affiliate Marketing Industry Study estimates that US affiliate marketing spending increased from $9.1 billion in 2021 to $13.62 billion in 2024, and that $113 billion in e-commerce sales were attributed to affiliate marketing in 2024. These are industry estimates reported by the association, not government statistics or a forecast of what an individual business will earn. See the PMA 2025 study.

Potential disadvantages and risks
Results are not assured
Affiliate marketing does not guarantee sales, lower costs, or better performance than other growth channels. The outcome for a business depends on audience and offer fit, how referrals are tracked, which actions trigger payment, and how the program is managed. The industry figures above describe market scale; they do not predict an individual company’s return.

Partner oversight takes work
Third-party promotion requires the business to choose partners, explain what they may claim, and monitor how they represent the offer. Misleading or unsupported claims can create legal and reputational exposure. The FTC says that an advertiser does not avoid responsibility under the FTC Act simply by delegating promotional work; advertisers need reasonable programs to train and monitor endorsers they pay or direct. Its Endorsement Guides Q&A explains this responsibility.

Claims and endorsements must be truthful
FTC business guidance says advertising claims must be truthful, not deceptive or unfair, and evidence-based. Endorsements should reflect the endorser’s honest opinion and experience; they cannot make claims that would be deceptive or unsubstantiated if the advertiser made them directly. Review the FTC’s advertising and marketing guidance and Endorsement Guides Q&A.
Disclosure: what businesses and affiliates should do
When an affiliate has a financial relationship with a retailer, that relationship should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously on the site. The disclosure should be near the recommendation; a reader may not understand that the phrase “affiliate link” means the publisher gets paid. The FTC’s guidance says, “The closer the disclosure is to your recommendation, the better.” It gives this example: “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.” See the FTC’s Endorsement Guides Q&A. Applicable rules can vary by jurisdiction, so check current requirements for the markets where the business and its affiliates operate.

How to decide whether it fits your business
Assess the program before recruiting affiliates or committing to a channel. The key questions are about fit, measurement, compensation, oversight, and support for claims—not industry growth figures.

- Check audience fit. Identify the people an affiliate reaches and whether they are likely to need the offer. A partnership is less compelling when the audience and product do not align.
- Define what counts as a referral. Specify which actions are tracked and how attribution works. Confirm that the tracking method and program terms can connect qualifying activity to the right partner.
- Set payment triggers clearly. State what action earns compensation and what program terms apply. Do not assume that a click, lead, or sale is payable unless the terms say so.
- Plan training and monitoring. Decide how the business will explain acceptable claims, review promotions, and address misleading content or missing disclosures. If the business cannot provide reasonable oversight, that is a significant operating constraint.
- Require support for promotional claims. Affiliates should not make claims that the business cannot substantiate or that misrepresent their experience. Establish how partners can raise questions and how problematic promotions will be corrected.
What established programs illustrate
A program aimed at a defined professional audience
Shopify’s affiliate program documentation describes a program for entrepreneurs, educators, influencers, and content creators who reach an entrepreneurial audience. It says applicants should have an active website, an established audience, original content, and relevant commerce or entrepreneurship experience; applications are reviewed. Approved affiliates use Impact for tracking, and referrals may qualify for commission when a new merchant buys a paid plan. This is an example of audience-specific program design, not a promise of acceptance or earnings.

A retailer program for publishers and creators
Amazon Associates describes a program for qualifying websites and mobile apps, with commission income that varies by product category. It illustrates how program terms can vary by the products promoted; it does not establish that a retailer affiliate program suits every business.
Quick Recap
When affiliate marketing is a poor fit
- The affiliates you can recruit do not reach an audience that matches the offer.
- The business cannot define or reliably track the actions that trigger payment.
- Compensation terms are unclear, making it difficult to determine when a referral is payable.
- The business lacks the capacity to train and monitor partners or respond to misleading claims and missing disclosures.
- The business cannot substantiate the claims affiliates would need to make to promote the offer.
