In Privacy display settings, look under Conditions for turning on. Samsung lists these possible triggers:
#1 Best Overall
- PRIVACY DISPLAY: Automatically hide your screen from those beside you. The built-in privacy display can be preset¹ to turn on when receiving notifications, typing passwords, or using specific apps
- TYPE IT IN. TRANSFORM IT FAST: Enhance any shot in seconds on your smartphone by using Photo Assist² with Galaxy AI.³ Add objects, restore details, or apply new styles by simply typing or tapping
- NIGHTS, CAPTURED CLEARLY: From gigs to city lights, record and capture moments after dark with clarity using Nightography so your photos and videos stay crisp and clear on your Samsung Galaxy
- MAKE IT. EDIT IT. SHARE IT: Turn everyday moments into something personal with creative tools built right into your mobile phone, whether it’s a special contact photo, custom wallpaper, an invitation or more⁴
- HELP THAT KEEPS UP: Stay in the moment while Now Nudge with Galaxy AI helps you respond faster and stay organized with smart suggestions⁵ that appear exactly when you need them on your phone
- Specific apps you select
- Entering a PIN, pattern, or password
- Notification pop-ups
When conditions are configured, the feature can activate only when those conditions occur rather than staying on continuously. Samsung Australia describes this behavior in its Galaxy S26 Ultra instructions. Labels and available controls may differ by region or software version.
Choose stronger protection when needed
Samsung’s US setup guide says Maximum privacy protection narrows the viewing angle further and dims the screen. It may also slightly blur content or change colors, and Samsung warns the screen may appear darker in bright surroundings. The company does not publish a quantified viewing-angle or effectiveness figure for this feature, so treat it as a way to reduce side visibility, not a guarantee that nobody else can see the display.

Fix common activation problems
A selected app does not trigger Privacy display
An app can run under a different package name than the one shown in its usual listing. Samsung recommends checking it through Recents > app icon > App Info, then selecting the matching app in Privacy display settings. See Samsung’s Privacy display troubleshooting guide.
Privacy display keeps turning back on
Open Settings > Display > Privacy display and review Conditions for turning on. A configured app, credential-entry, or notification trigger can reactivate the feature; remove or disable conditions you no longer want.

The display seems too dim
Check whether Maximum privacy protection is enabled, since Samsung says that mode dims the screen. Samsung also cautions that a third-party privacy screen protector may reduce brightness; one is not required to use the phone’s built-in Privacy display. If menu labels differ from these instructions, install current device software and check the options available on your phone.
