Corsair says the cable can trigger a GPU shutdown if it detects unsafe heat; Tom’s Hardware reports a 65°C cutoff in its review. That is a useful protective response, not a guarantee against every connector failure: the reported behavior is a black screen while the rest of the system stays on.
What is the RM1000e ThermalProtect?
It is a fully modular 1000W power supply built to ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 specifications. The ThermalProtect revision is distinguished by its included sensor-equipped 12V-2×6 cable. Corsair’s US listing identifies it as SKU CP-9020337-NA; check the regional SKU and revision when buying, since the feature should not be assumed for every RM1000e generation. Corsair’s US product listing specifies a 140 × 150 × 86 mm chassis, Zero RPM mode, and a seven-year warranty.

Corsair lists two EPS connectors, four PCIe 8-pin connectors, six SATA connectors and two PATA connectors. The cable bundle includes a 650 mm ThermalProtect 12V-2×6-to-2×8-pin PCIe (6+2-pin) modular cable, two 650 mm 8-pin PCIe cables, and SATA/PATA leads. These are manufacturer-listed specifications; the number of PSU-side sockets limits how many included leads can be connected simultaneously.

According to Corsair, yes: “When ThermalProtect detects an unsafe temperature, the OTP technology activates, causing the GPU to shut down to prevent any potential damage.” The claim is about a GPU shutdown, not the PSU switching off or the whole computer losing power. Tom’s Hardware describes the expected result as a black screen while the rest of the system remains on. The response is intended to reduce risk, but neither the product claim nor the review establishes that the cable prevents every overheating or connector failure.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Tom’s Hardware reports that the sensor sits in the cable comb about 30 mm behind the GPU connector and is wired to the 12V-2×6 sense pins. The review reports a 65°C trigger: the sensor pulls the sense lines to signal the graphics card to shut down. It says Corsair describes that shutdown as taking milliseconds. These details are the reviewer’s account of the implementation, not independent testing in this article.
The review characterizes the mechanism as hardware-based, needing neither software nor a motherboard header, and says it can work with graphics cards and power supplies that carry native 12V-2×6. Corsair calls the technology patent-pending. The available claims do not establish protection for a different cable or an older PSU; check compatibility against the exact PSU SKU and revision rather than assuming an included cable can be substituted across generations. Corsair’s spare-parts and cable-compatibility resource is a place to verify fit, not proof that all RM1000e versions accept this cable.

Which way does the ThermalProtect cable go?
The sensor end must face the graphics card. Tom’s Hardware reports that the cable is directional, so orient it with the sensor-equipped end at the GPU’s 12V-2×6 connector. Follow the cable’s markings and the PSU and GPU manuals during installation; do not force a connector or infer compatibility from the RM1000e name alone.

How did it perform in Tom’s Hardware’s tests?
Tom’s Hardware tested the unit at 25°C ambient and in a roughly 45°C hotbox. Its results show strong measured efficiency and a fan that stays off at moderate load, but noise rises substantially under sustained high load in the hotter test. These are that reviewer’s sample measurements, not guaranteed results for every unit, room or case.

| Test condition | Efficiency reported by Tom’s Hardware | Fan and noise findings reported by Tom’s Hardware |
|---|---|---|
| 25°C ambient | Average 92.4% at 230V and 90.4% at 115V over the nominal load range | Fan remained off through 500W; noise reached 40.7 dB(A) at sustained 1000W load |
| Roughly 45°C hotbox | Average 91.7% at 230V and 89.7% at 115V | Noise topped 54.3 dB(A) from roughly 900W onward |
The practical trade-off is clearest if the PSU will regularly run near its full rating in a warm environment: the review’s hotbox result was much louder than its room-temperature full-load result. At loads within the tested fanless window, the fan stayed off in the reviewer’s 25°C setup.
What does the efficiency-rating disagreement mean?
Corsair markets the RM1000e ThermalProtect as Cybenetics Platinum-rated. Tom’s Hardware said that, at its review publication time, it could not find a Cybenetics database entry for this revision and that no 80 PLUS certification had been published. Based on its own measurements, the reviewer judged the efficiency to be at a Cybenetics Platinum level but equivalent to 80 PLUS Gold. Treat Corsair’s marketing and the reviewer’s certification commentary as separate statements; the latter is not evidence of a published certification entry.

What are the purchase trade-offs?
- Protection included: The sensor cable comes with this revision, rather than being a separately assumed accessory. Confirm the exact regional SKU and revision before buying.
- Warranty: Corsair lists seven years. Tom’s Hardware notes that this is shorter than the ten-year warranty on Corsair’s higher series.
- Cable and socket constraints: The review calls the PSU-side socket count limited, meaning not all included leads can be connected at once.
- Noise under heat and load: The reviewer measured a marked rise in noise in its hotbox at high output, which matters more for a system that sustains heavy loads in a warm case.
- Price uncertainty: Corsair’s US page displayed $149.99, discounted from $179.99, when accessed on October 7, 2026. Tom’s Hardware discussed a $180 MSRP and said it lacked solid retail-price data at review publication. Neither figure establishes a stable current street price.
- Alternatives: Tom’s Hardware names the Corsair RM1000x, Seasonic Focus GX-1000 V4 and MSI MPG A1000GS as relevant comparisons. A fair choice depends on contemporaneous pricing and equivalent testing; the available figures do not establish a universal winner.
Tom’s Hardware praised the measured electrical performance, modular cabling, fanless window and included ThermalProtect cable, while noting the sparse accessory bundle alongside the warranty, socket and hot-load noise drawbacks. Its review also describes an HEC-built platform and component observations from its sample, including Teapo capacitors and two Nippon Chemi-Con capacitors on the secondary. Those are teardown observations from one reviewed sample, not Corsair’s official specification or a broader reliability study.
Who should consider it?
Consider this model if you need a 1000W ATX 3.1 supply and value having a sensor-equipped 12V-2×6 cable included. Weigh the seven-year warranty, PSU-side socket limit and hot-load acoustics against your system’s expected power draw, case temperature and local price. The sensor feature is a risk-reduction measure with a reported shutdown response, not a substitute for correct connector seating, compatible cabling or checking the exact PSU revision.
