To copy files from a microSD card to a Chromebook, connect the card, open the Files app, select the card in the sidebar, and drag the files or folders you want into My files or another destination. Your Chromebook needs a built-in microSD slot or a compatible card reader, and the card must use a supported format.
What you need before transferring files
- A way to connect the card: Check your Chromebook’s ports and specifications. Some models have a built-in microSD slot; others need a card reader or adapter that fits an available port. Google lists SD and microSD cards and adapters among the peripherals Chromebooks can connect to, but that does not mean every model has a built-in slot. Google’s external-device guidance can help with compatibility.
- A readable card format: Google lists FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, HFS+, ISO9660, MTP, NTFS, and UDF as supported external-storage formats. Journaled HFS+, ISO9660, and UDF are read-only, so you can read files on them but cannot write to them using the Chromebook.
- Access to the device: If this is a school- or work-managed Chromebook, administrator settings may restrict external storage or certain files. Ask your administrator if access is blocked.
Google’s compatibility information does not establish a universal microSD capacity limit or transfer speed, so check your Chromebook model’s documentation for device-specific limits rather than assuming a card will work based on its capacity alone.

How do I copy files from a microSD card to a Chromebook?
- Insert the microSD card into the Chromebook’s built-in slot, if it has one. Otherwise, insert it into a compatible card reader and connect the reader to the Chromebook.
- Open the Launcher and select Files.
- In the Files app’s left sidebar, select the card’s name. Its contents should appear in the main window. Google’s Chromebook migration instructions describe using Files to access a connected storage device.
- Select the files or folders you want to copy, then drag them to My files or the specific folder where you want them stored. If you want a local copy, choose a folder in My files as the destination.
- Wait for the copy to finish. Open the destination folder and try opening one of the copied files to confirm that it is present and readable.
- In Files, select the card’s Eject option before removing it or disconnecting its reader.
Which destination should I choose?
Use My files when you want the files saved on the Chromebook. To keep them organized, open or create a folder there and copy the card contents into it. If you are working with another destination, such as a cloud location, confirm that it is available in Files and that you intend to save an online copy rather than only a local one.

What to do if the card does not appear
Check the connection and ports
Make sure the card is seated in the slot or reader and that the reader is fully connected to a port on the Chromebook. If you are using an adapter, confirm that it matches a port available on your particular model; not every Chromebook has the same slots or connectors.

Check the card format and ChromeOS
If Files reports that the storage device is unsupported or the card does not mount, check whether it uses one of Google’s supported formats: FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, HFS+, ISO9660, MTP, NTFS, or UDF. Also check for ChromeOS updates. Google recommends using the latest ChromeOS version when troubleshooting external storage. Journaled HFS+, ISO9660, and UDF are read-only, which limits writing to those devices.
Use another computer and cloud storage if necessary
If the Chromebook cannot read the card, connect it to another computer that can. Copy or upload the files to a cloud file system, such as Google Drive, then access them from the Chromebook. This option requires an internet connection for uploading and downloading; it is not a direct card-to-Chromebook transfer.

Do not format the card until its files are safe
Google notes that reformatting may be necessary if an external device is unrecognized or a partition cannot be mounted, but formatting erases the data on the card. First try reading or copying the files using another device. Reformat only if you have secured any needed files elsewhere and accept that the card’s existing contents will be erased.

A completed copy and a file the Chromebook can open are separate things. If a copied file shows as an unknown or unsupported type, check whether ChromeOS supports that file type. Google suggests trying a web application or cloud storage for files that are not supported directly. The file may have transferred successfully even if the Chromebook cannot open it with an available app.

When to use a reader versus a cloud workaround
