Two Ways to Work With Your Local Coding Model Away From Home

Keep your coding model on your own computer and reach it remotely through a private-network API connection or an SSH session on the model host.

You can use a coding model running on your own computer while away from home by keeping the model host reachable and connecting to it securely. The two practical routes are to have a coding client on your remote device call the host’s model API over a private network, or to SSH into the host and run your coding tools there. The right choice depends on where you want the coding workflow to run and whether your client supports the model server’s API.

Choose how you want to work

Approach Where the coding client runs What you connect to Best fit
Remote model API On the device you are using away from home The model server’s API endpoint over a private network Your client supports an API format the server provides, and you want to use that client locally.
SSH to the host On the computer that runs the model, after you connect A shell session on the model-host computer You want to use tools installed on the host instead of configuring a separate client to call its API.

Both options depend on the host computer being powered on, connected to the network, and reachable when you need it. Tailscale describes its tailnet addresses as consistent across Wi-Fi networks, allowing connections between devices on different local networks when network policy permits (Tailscale’s guide to accessing a development server).

Option 1: Connect a remote coding client to the model API

In this setup, the model server stays on your home or office computer while the coding client runs on your laptop or another remote device. Put both devices on a private network, then configure the client to use the server’s reachable address. Tailscale’s self-hosted-provider guide describes servers such as Ollama, llama.cpp, and vLLM, and uses an OpenAI-compatible Chat Completions API in its Aperture configuration (Aperture’s self-hosted provider setup).

Configure the address and API details

  1. Make the model host reachable. Install and configure your private-network software on the host and remote device. Confirm that policy allows the remote device to reach the host and the model service.
  2. Use the host’s tailnet address. In Aperture’s provider configuration, enter the model server’s tailnet hostname or Tailscale IP address. Do not use localhost for a server running on another computer: there, it refers to the machine running the gateway, not your model host.
  3. Confirm the API format and endpoint path. The Aperture guide’s provider configuration uses OpenAI-compatible Chat Completions and supports /v1/chat/completions and /chat/completions. These details apply to that configuration; check the server and coding client documentation for the format and path they actually support.
  4. Set the correct model ID. Check the model server’s model-list endpoint, typically GET /v1/models, then use the ID returned by your server. Do not assume an example model name matches your installation.
  5. Test a small request. Verify that the client can reach the endpoint and receive a response before relying on it for a coding task. If the connection fails, check the address, service availability, access policy, endpoint path, model ID, and API compatibility.

OpenAI-compatible does not mean feature-identical. A client may require API features that a particular server does not implement, and Aperture’s documentation says compatibility is not tested or guaranteed for every provider that claims OpenAI compatibility (Aperture provider setup; Aperture documentation).

Option 2: SSH into the computer running the model

SSH gives you a shell on the model host, where you can run the coding tools installed there. This avoids setting up a separate remote coding client to call the model API, but you are working through the host rather than using a local client that makes API requests to it.

  1. Enable SSH on the model-host computer and ensure it advertises SSH on your private network.
  2. Check that your network policy permits your user and source device to connect to that host and SSH user.
  3. Connect using the host’s MagicDNS name or Tailscale IP address, as supported by your setup.
  4. Run your coding workflow in the shell on the host.

Tailscale SSH uses tailnet identity and access policies; its documentation describes the SSH connection as encrypted over WireGuard. The destination must advertise SSH, and the policy must allow the connection (Tailscale SSH documentation).

Secure access and troubleshoot common failures

Keep the model service reachable only through the private network where possible, and grant access only to the devices and users that need it. Tailscale describes connections to development servers as direct and encrypted, subject to network policy; SSH access is also controlled by policy (development-server access guide; Tailscale SSH documentation). Private networking does not make every application secure automatically, so still use the model server’s supported access controls and avoid exposing an API endpoint publicly without a deliberate security plan.

  • The client cannot connect: Confirm the model host is online, the server process is running, the hostname or IP is correct, and network policy permits access. Remember that localhost points to the computer running the client or gateway.
  • The connection works but requests fail: Check that the client and server use compatible API formats, the endpoint path is correct, and the configured model ID exists on the server.
  • SSH is refused or unavailable: Confirm SSH is enabled and advertised by the destination, and that policy permits the specific user and device to connect.
  • It works at home but not elsewhere: Check that both devices are connected to the private network and that the relevant network policy allows traffic across those networks.

Do you need a separate computer to host the model?

No. An existing computer can serve as the host if it meets the requirements of the exact model and runtime you plan to use and remains available when you need remote access. A dedicated mini PC or small-form-factor computer is an option, not a requirement established by the networking setup. The cited setup documentation does not specify minimum RAM, GPU, storage, or throughput for particular models, so check the model and runtime requirements before buying hardware.
