To remove a Win32/Expiro detection, update Microsoft Defender’s security intelligence and run a full scan. If detections persist or the infection may remain, run Microsoft Defender Offline, then check Protection History for any unfinished remediation. Expiro infects executable (EXE) files, so it is not simply an unwanted app you can uninstall; a successful detection action also does not prove that every system change has been reversed.
What Win32/Expiro can do
Microsoft describes Expiro.U as a virus that infects EXE files across drives, collects user credentials, and can allow remote access or control. Treat a detection as a serious security incident, but do not assume every current detection label or variant behaves identically: Microsoft’s Expiro.U entry was published May 20, 2011, and updated September 15, 2017; its general Expiro entry dates to January 22, 2014. Because the documented risk includes credential theft, consider changing important passwords and securing important accounts from a separate device you know is clean. This is a prudent response to the risk, not a specific remediation instruction from Microsoft.
Step 1: Update Defender and run a full scan

Open Windows Security and check for the latest security intelligence. Keeping the definitions current helps Defender recognize current threats.

Go to Virus & threat protection, open the scan options, and choose Full scan. Start the scan and let it finish. Microsoft says a full scan checks every file and program on the device.

If Defender detects Expiro, allow it to quarantine or remove the threat. Do not choose an option to allow or restore a suspected threat simply to clear the alert.
Microsoft recommends a full-system scan with an up-to-date security solution for Expiro. Its current Windows guidance also says to update security intelligence and run a full Microsoft Defender Antivirus scan.

Step 2: Run Microsoft Defender Offline if the threat persists
If detections continue, or Defender recommends further action, use an offline scan. Unlike a full scan that runs while Windows is active, Microsoft Defender Offline restarts the PC into Windows Recovery Environment and scans without loading Windows. This can make it harder for persistent malware to hide or interfere with the scan.

Save open work; the scan restarts your PC.

In Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection > Scan options.

Select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan), then start the scan and allow the computer to restart.

After Windows starts again, review the result in Protection History.

Microsoft says the offline scan uses the latest definitions and runs in Windows Recovery Environment. If menu wording differs on your Windows version, use the matching scan options shown in Windows Security.
Step 3: Check Protection History and finish remediation
Open Windows Security > Protection History and inspect each Expiro-related entry. The status tells you what Defender did and whether you need to act:

Quarantined: The item is blocked but has not yet been removed. Open the entry and choose Remove if that is the available recommended action.

Blocked: Defender blocked and removed the threat.

Remediation incomplete: Defender could not finish successfully. Expand the event and follow its additional steps. If the instructions do not resolve the issue, seek help from a qualified support professional.

Do not restore or allow an item unless you have established that it is safe. A removed detection is not proof that all lasting changes to Windows have been undone; Microsoft warns that Expiro detection and removal may leave remnant files or system changes.

When scans do not settle the issue
Microsoft’s reviewed guidance does not set a universal threshold for reinstalling Windows after Expiro, and the scans cannot be presented as a guarantee of complete system restoration. If detections recur or remediation remains incomplete, consult a qualified support professional rather than assuming that a single clean scan—or a reinstall in every case—is the right answer.
The reviewed guidance also does not establish a safe backup procedure for files on a confirmed infected system. Avoid treating an ordinary file backup as a proven-safe way to transfer data; get qualified advice about preserving files if you need them.
