To set up QoS for PlayStation, use your router’s app or admin page—not a universal setting on the console. If your router supports device priority, select your PS5 or PS4; if it offers a gaming or application preset instead, use that. QoS can give selected traffic more bandwidth when the network is busy, but it does not guarantee lower ping or fix problems caused by your internet provider, the route to a game server, Wi-Fi signal, or the server itself.
How do I set up QoS for PlayStation?
Router menus and features differ by model and firmware, so there is no click path that works on every router. First confirm that your exact router supports QoS or a similar device-priority feature. Use the manufacturer’s current instructions for your model; the steps below show the general process, with TP-Link as one model-dependent example.

- Find your router model. Check its label, the manufacturer’s app, or the router’s admin page. Open the manufacturer’s support page for that model and confirm which QoS controls it offers.
- Open the router’s QoS controls. Sign in through its official app or admin page. Look for QoS, device priority, gaming priority, or application priority; the exact label varies.
- Choose the PlayStation or a gaming preset. If the router lists connected devices, select the PS5 or PS4 and set it to high priority. If it only supports application or gaming priority, select the closest available option. Some routers provide only one type of priority control.
- Enter bandwidth values if requested. Use accurate upload and download capacity for your internet connection, following the router maker’s instructions. TP-Link allows manual entry when its speed-test result does not match the bandwidth supplied by the ISP. There is no universal value or percentage that applies to every connection.
- Save the settings and connect the console. Use Ethernet where practical, then verify the console’s network connection using the menu paths below.
- Check it during normal use. Compare connection stability while your household is using the network as usual. This is a practical check, not a guarantee of lower latency; if problems persist, investigate Wi-Fi, the internet connection, NAT, or service availability separately.
TP-Link example: menus depend on the router
TP-Link’s guide, last updated May 14, 2026, documents several different paths. On some HomeCare models, the Tether app has HomeCare > QoS, where you can choose a preset or Custom. Applicable web interfaces may use Advanced > QoS > Application Priority/Device Priority. Models without HomeShield or HomeCare may instead use Advanced > QoS > Settings, where the user enables QoS, enters bandwidth, adjusts priorities, and adds a device rule. These are examples for supported TP-Link models, not universal router instructions. Check TP-Link’s model-specific QoS guide and verify compatibility for your device.

How do I prioritize my PS5 on my router?
Connect the PS5 to the router, then find it in the router’s connected-device list and set its priority if the router supports that control. A router may display the console by its device name or network address; identify it carefully rather than prioritizing an unrelated device. If the router has no device-priority option, use its supported gaming or application-priority setting if available. Some routers do not offer either feature.

QoS is a router feature that manages traffic when the connection is congested. TP-Link describes it as allocating more bandwidth to selected traffic when the network is overloaded. It cannot create additional internet capacity, and the cited guidance does not establish that it will lower PlayStation ping, prevent lag, or resolve a poor ISP route or game-server issue.
Should I use Ethernet, and where are the PlayStation network settings?
A wired connection is a useful baseline when practical. Sony recommends wired connections for unstable Remote Play, and provides different setup menus for PS5 and PS4. The paths below are English equivalents of Sony’s official setup guidance; labels can differ by system language or software version.

- PS5 over Wi-Fi: Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, then choose a network.
- PS5 over wired LAN: Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect.
- PS4 over Wi-Fi: Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Use Wi-Fi > Easy, then choose a network.
- PS4 over wired LAN: Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Use a LAN Cable > Easy. The console then offers Test Internet Connection.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat QoS cannot fix—and what to check if connection problems remain
Wi-Fi, internet service, or a PlayStation outage
QoS does not correct a weak wireless signal, an ISP fault, or a problem with the path to a particular game server. If the connection is still unstable, check the console’s connection, try Ethernet if available, and check PlayStation service status in case of an outage or maintenance.

IPv6-only router settings
PS5 supports IPv6 but not an IPv6-only network. If your router is configured for IPv6 only, Sony says to change it to use IPv4 as well; consult the router maker if you need help with that setting.
Remote Play, NAT, and port forwarding
Remote Play has separate network requirements and troubleshooting from QoS. Sony recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download for Remote Play; that figure is not a minimum speed requirement for every online PlayStation game. Sony also says Remote Play uses UDP port 8572, and forwarding that port may help if the router blocks it. NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play. Port forwarding and NAT settings are not QoS settings, so use them only when troubleshooting the relevant Remote Play or NAT problem—not as a routine QoS recipe. Sony’s Remote Play troubleshooting guide also recommends checking internet, system, and app updates and notes that heavy bandwidth use by other devices can affect smoothness.
