How Do I Grant Permission to Use My Webcam? Windows, Mac, Chrome and Edge

Webcam access is controlled at the device, app/browser and website levels. Here's where to switch each on in Windows, macOS, Chrome and Edge, and what to do if it's locked.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You grant webcam permission at up to three layers: the device or operating system, the app or browser, and the specific website. All applicable layers must allow the camera. A site-level Allow cannot override a device-level block, and a computer that allows your browser to use the camera can still have that one site blocked.

The three layers of camera permission

Layer What it controls Where you change it
Device / operating system Whether any app may use the camera Windows Privacy & security settings; macOS System Settings
App or browser Whether Edge, Chrome, Safari or a specific app may use it Same OS settings page, per-app toggle
Website Whether one site may use the camera inside the browser The browser’s site permission settings

Work from the bottom up: operating system first, then browser, then the site. If the camera setting is greyed out or labelled as managed by your organization, you can’t fix it yourself (see the last section).

Windows 11 and Windows 10

Step 1: Turn on camera access in Windows

  1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. On older Windows 10 screens the path is Settings > Privacy > Camera.
  2. Turn on Camera access.
  3. Turn on Let apps access your camera.
  4. If the app is a Microsoft Store app, switch on its individual entry in the list.
  5. If it’s a browser or other desktop app, turn on Let desktop apps access your camera. Microsoft counts browsers such as Edge as desktop apps, and they don’t get their own toggle in the list.

Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s camera permission page. These steps can still work on an existing Windows 10 PC, but that machine no longer receives regular security updates.

Step 2: Allow the website in Edge

Open the site and choose Allow when Edge asks to use your camera. If you previously blocked it, go to Edge Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site Permissions > All sites, select the website, and change Camera to Allow. This is separate from the Windows setting; you need both.

Logitech C270 720p Webcam Plug-and-Play Wide Screen Video Calling - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.

  • C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.

Mac and Safari

  • For an app (including a browser): open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and switch the app on. Apple says built-in apps such as FaceTime and Photo Booth already have access.
  • For a website in Safari: open Safari > Settings > Websites > Camera and set the site to Allow (or Ask).

When an app is using the camera, the green indicator light beside it comes on. That’s a quick way to confirm the camera is actually active.

Chrome on a computer

  1. Visit the site and click Allow when Chrome asks to use your camera.
  2. If you blocked it earlier, open Chrome > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Camera, find the site among those not allowed, and change it to Allow.
  3. If Chrome tells you to open your computer’s settings, do so and enable camera access for Chrome there; the exact setting name depends on the device.

The same Camera section lets you pick a default camera or switch between cameras. If the site gets a black screen despite permission, the wrong camera (for example a virtual one) may be selected.

Firefox, iPhone, iPad and Android

The same logic applies: check the device’s permission for the app or browser, then the browser’s permission for the site. Menu paths on these platforms vary by version, so use the current help page for your specific browser and OS rather than relying on a path from an older guide.

Troubleshooting when it still doesn’t work

  1. Confirm device-level camera access is on.
  2. Confirm the app or browser is allowed (on Windows, Store-app toggle versus desktop-app access).
  3. Check the site’s saved permission and change Block to Allow.
  4. In Chrome, confirm the intended camera is selected.
  5. Test the camera in another app. If it works there, the problem is the target app’s or site’s permissions or configuration, not the hardware. If it fails everywhere, look at drivers, a physical privacy shutter or the camera’s connection.
  6. Reload the page or restart the browser after changing a setting, since some sites only ask on load.

When an administrator controls the setting

On work or school computers, camera settings can be locked by policy. Microsoft’s guidance states: “If the Camera access setting can’t be changed, an administrator on the device needs to change the setting.” Chrome and Edge can likewise be managed by an organization, in which case site-level choices may be restricted too. Ask your IT contact to allow the camera, naming the specific site or app you need.
