It tries to complete a TCP connection from its own server to your public IP address and port. If the connection succeeds, that port was reachable from that checker, at that moment. It does not show that the application behind the port is healthy or correctly configured. A “closed” result is less informative than it looks, because several different problems produce it.
What an online port checker actually does
A checker makes a TCP connection attempt from a server it controls to the host and port you specify. Netgate’s pfSense documentation describes its own diagnostic as “a simple TCP port connection test” and says: “The test only attempts to open a connection and optionally displays the data sent back from the server.” By default it attempts the standard handshake: SYN, SYN+ACK, ACK.

Three things follow from this:
- Location matters. A probe from outside your network exercises the public path, including firewall and NAT behavior. A test from a machine on the same LAN may never touch that path, so it can pass while the internet still can’t reach you, or the reverse.
- “Open” is narrow. It means a TCP connection was established. It doesn’t prove which program accepted it or that the service works end to end.
- It covers TCP only. Netgate states explicitly that its test does not work for UDP. A TCP checker says nothing about UDP services such as many game, VoIP or VPN ports.
How to run a useful check
- Confirm the service is running and listening on the port you intend to test.
- Use a checker that probes from the public internet, not from your own network.
- Enter the public IP address (many checkers detect it automatically) and the port number.
- Run the test while the service is running. A port with nothing listening will not report as open.
- After each change to a firewall, router or service setting, retest from an external network.
Reading the result
| What you see | What it can mean | Where to look next |
|---|---|---|
| Open / connection succeeded | A TCP handshake completed from the checker to that address and port. | Test with a real client for the protocol (browser, SSH, database client). Open does not mean the application is healthy. |
| Refused / reset | The host or something in front of it answered, but nothing accepted the connection on that port. | Service not running, wrong port, or listening on a different address or interface. |
| Timed out / filtered | No answer. Consistent with packet filtering, a routing problem, an unreachable address, or a service that never replied. | Host firewall, cloud security rules, router forwarding, ISP restrictions. |
| Generic “closed” | Some tools merge refusal and timeout into one label. | Check how your chosen tool defines “closed” before drawing conclusions. |
Port numbers are conventions, not identities. NIST notes that scanners may associate a familiar port with a typical service, but confirming the service takes extra steps, and version detection is not foolproof because banners and other observable traits can be altered. An open port 443 doesn’t prove a web server is the thing answering.

1. The service itself
Make sure it is running and bound to the expected port. A service listening only on the loopback address or one specific interface won’t accept outside connections. On Linux, ss -ltn lists listening TCP sockets. On Windows, netstat -an shows listening ports.

- LARGE BACKLIT LCD: Backlit LCD display enables easy reading of pin-to-pin wiremap results, even in low-lit areas
- COMPREHENSIVE FAULT DETECTION: Test for Open, Short, Miswire, Split-Pair faults, Cross-over, and Shield, providing thorough fault detection
- INTUITIVE USER INTERFACE: User-friendly interface with three buttons and simple, easy-to-identify test responses, ensuring a smooth testing experience
- MULTIPLE TONE GENERATOR STYLES: Tone on a single wire, wire pair, or all 8 conductor wires using the multiple style tone generator (solid/warble); requires probe Cat. No. VDV500-123 (sold separately)
2. The host firewall
Check that the operating system’s firewall allows inbound TCP on that port.
3. Cloud or provider firewall
If the host is a VPS or cloud instance, a security group or provider-level firewall can block traffic before it reaches the machine, regardless of the OS settings.

- VERSATILE CABLE TESTING: Cable tester tests voice (RJ11/12), data (RJ45), and video (coax F-connector) terminated cables, providing clear results for comprehensive testing on unenergized Ethernet cables (not designed to test PoE)
- EXTENDED CABLE LENGTH MEASUREMENT: Measure cable length up to 2000 feet (610 m), allowing for precise cable length determination
- COMPREHENSIVE FAULT DETECTION: Test for Open, Short, Miswire, or Split-Pair faults, ensuring thorough fault detection and identification
- BACKLIT LCD DISPLAY: Backlit LCD screen displays cable length, wiremap, cable ID, and test results, ensuring easy readability in various lighting conditions
- EFFICIENT CABLE TRACING: Trace cables, wire pairs, and individual conductor wires using the multiple style tone generator (requires analog probe Cat. No. VDV500-123, sold separately), simplifying cable tracing tasks
4. Router port forwarding (home or office)
Verify the forwarding rule uses the right protocol (TCP), the right external and internal ports, and the correct internal destination address. If the device’s LAN address changes, the rule points at the wrong place, so a DHCP reservation helps.
5. CGNAT or ISP filtering
Compare your router’s WAN address with the public address a checker sees. If they differ, or the WAN address is in a private or shared range, your ISP may be using carrier-grade NAT. A port-forward rule cannot make a private or shared upstream address directly reachable from the internet. Ask the ISP whether CGNAT or inbound filtering applies, and whether a public address is available.

After the port opens
A successful port check is a reachability signal, not an application health check. Once TCP connectivity works, use a client or health check for the specific protocol to confirm the service behaves correctly.
