Use your phone maker’s location service on another trusted device or in a browser. A dead phone may show only its last reported location; some supported models can still be found for a limited time after shutdown if offline finding was enabled beforehand. Lock or mark the phone as lost while you search, and contact authorities if theft is possible—do not confront anyone at the map location.
What to do first
- Open the right location service. For iPhone, use Apple’s Find My app or Find Devices at iCloud.com/find. For Android, use Google Find Hub. For a Samsung Galaxy, you can also use Samsung Find or SmartThings Find.
- Check the location label and time. A last-known location shows where the phone last reported, not necessarily where it is now. Apple says a last known location may remain visible for up to seven days after the battery runs out. Google may show an encrypted recent location stored while the device was online.
- Try ringing only if the service offers it. A phone that is offline or fully depleted may not receive the command. Samsung says its ring action sounds for one minute when available, even if the phone is muted or vibrating.
- Lock it or mark it lost. Use the service’s lost-device option while you continue searching. Apple Lost Mode locks the device, can suspend Apple Pay cards and passes on compatible devices, and lets you display contact information. Samsung Find can remotely lock a phone and show an emergency contact and message.
- Escalate safely. If the location suggests theft, contact local authorities rather than going to the location yourself.
- Consider erasing it only after weighing the consequences. Remote erase can protect personal data, but may affect recovery options; an offline phone may not receive the erase command until it reconnects. Samsung advises backing up data before a remote reset.
What you can expect by phone platform
| Platform | What may be visible when the phone is dead or offline | What must be in place |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Find My may show its last known location for up to seven days after the battery runs out. Supported devices may also be detected through Bluetooth by nearby Apple devices in the Find My network. | Find My and applicable offline-finding features must have been set up before the phone was lost; availability varies by device and settings. |
| Android | Google Find Hub may show an encrypted recent location. On supported models, including the Pixel 8 series, the network can locate a phone for several hours after it is turned off or runs out of battery. | Find Hub and offline finding must be configured before loss. For the supported post-shutdown behavior Google describes, Bluetooth and Location need to be on when the phone shuts down. |
| Samsung Galaxy | Samsung says, “If the device is powered off, only the last known location will be available.” | Samsung recommends enabling Allow this phone to be found, Send last location, and Offline finding in Lost device protection before the phone goes missing. |
These are platform-specific behaviors, not a guarantee that every dead phone can be located. Results depend on the model, settings enabled before loss, nearby devices in the relevant network, connectivity, and when the phone last reported. Neither a map pin nor an offline-finding feature guarantees a current, live position.

Why some phones can still be found after shutdown
Offline-finding networks use nearby devices to detect a missing phone over Bluetooth and relay an approximate location to its owner. Apple describes its Find My network as a crowdsourced network involving over a billion Apple devices; Apple says the location information is anonymous and encrypted. Google similarly describes encrypted recent locations and end-to-end encrypted location information for Find Hub. These systems require compatible hardware and prior configuration, and a phone that cannot participate in the network may show only an earlier location.

Protect your accounts if you cannot recover the phone
If recovery looks unlikely, review accounts and trusted devices that rely on the missing phone for multifactor authentication. Make sure you have another way to receive verification codes before removing the phone from an account or changing its trusted-device settings. If you erase the phone, understand that doing so may limit further location-based recovery; choose it when protecting the data matters more than continuing to search.
