Are free Gemini users losing access to Gemini models? Yes—but not Gemini altogether. Google says changes to model availability in Gemini Apps for personal accounts begin taking effect for users without an AI subscription on October 9, 2026. After the change, the listed free tier keeps Flash-Lite; AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash; and AI Pro and AI Ultra retain all three models in Google’s table: Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro. Google has not given AI Plus subscribers one shared change date; it says they should receive an email with their individual timing.
Which Gemini models will each plan have?
Google’s announced table changes which models are available by subscription tier. It describes model availability for Gemini Apps personal accounts, not work or school accounts.

| Google AI Pro | Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro | Pro remains listed for this tier. |
| Google AI Ultra | Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro | Pro remains listed for this tier. |

When will the change take effect?
Free users
Google says changes for users without an AI subscription start taking effect on October 9, 2026. The notice does not say every account will switch at the same moment.

What the change means if you use Gemini regularly
If you use the free tier
You are not losing all Gemini model access: Flash-Lite remains in Google’s post-change table. The practical loss is access to the other listed models, Flash and Pro.

Both plans list Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro. That model table alone does not establish which plan is worthwhile for you; compare local price, usage limits, and other included features as well.
Model access is not the same as usage limits
Having a model listed for a plan does not mean unlimited use. Google describes Gemini Apps limits as compute-based: the amount used depends on prompt complexity, the models and features used, and chat length. Limits refresh every five hours until a weekly cap is reached. Google says heavier features and advanced models use more of the available limit.
Google’s help page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists standard limits for users without a plan, twice standard for AI Plus, four times for AI Pro, and five or 20 times AI Pro limits for AI Ultra, depending on the subscription. Google says limits can change and may be adjusted when capacity is constrained. See Google’s Gemini Apps limits and upgrades page for current terms.

Google also lists context-window capacities of 32,000 tokens for no-plan users, 128,000 for AI Plus, and 1 million for AI Pro and AI Ultra. These figures describe context capacity, not the number of prompts you can send.

How to decide whether to change plans
- You need Pro specifically: Google’s post-change table lists Pro for AI Pro and AI Ultra, but not for the free tier or AI Plus.
- You mainly need Flash: AI Plus lists Flash as well as Flash-Lite; the free tier lists Flash-Lite only.
- You are considering a paid plan for heavier use: compare usage limits and included features, not only the model names. Limits are compute-based and can change.
- You are weighing the price: check the Google AI plan page for your country. Google says pricing varies by country. Its January 27, 2026 announcement gave a US launch price of $7.99 per month for AI Plus; that announcement figure is not confirmation of today’s price in every market.
For the launch announcement and geographic pricing caveat, see Google’s January 27, 2026 Google AI Plus announcement. Verify current local plan terms before subscribing.

Does this apply to work or school Gemini accounts?
The change notice concerns Gemini Apps personal accounts. It does not establish that the same model changes or dates apply to work or school accounts, which may have different account and plan arrangements. Do not assume the personal-account table covers them.
What to check before October 9
- Identify whether you use a personal Google account and whether it has a Google AI plan.
- Compare your current plan with Google’s announced model table, especially if your work depends on Pro.
- If you are an AI Plus subscriber, check your Google email for the account-specific effective date.
- Review current plan limits and your country’s price on Google’s plan information, since terms can change.
