In the familiar Hal Jordan origin, Abin Sur’s dying ring searches for a successor and chooses Hal, whose strong will makes him fit to wield it. The story also uses the phrase “born without fear,” but later Green Lantern stories more often describe the ideal as the ability to face or overcome fear. There is no single selection rule that applies across every comic and adaptation.
Why did Abin Sur’s ring choose Hal Jordan?
Abin Sur was a Green Lantern assigned to protect a sector of space. As he was dying, he entrusted his ring and his sector’s duties to a successor. In DC’s account of the classic origin, the ring selects test pilot Hal Jordan. DC describes Hal’s strong willpower as the quality he needs to operate the ring, while the solicitation for the Showcase #22 facsimile describes Abin Sur seeking someone “who is born without fear.” DC’s retrospective on the Green Lantern saga and the Showcase #22 facsimile solicitation give those versions of the explanation.

Put simply, the classic origin presents the ring as seeking a worthy successor, with Hal’s willpower and fear-facing character making him a suitable choice. “Without fear” should not be read as meaning that every Lantern must literally never feel afraid. Later stories put the emphasis on courage: feeling fear and still acting in spite of it.

Does a Green Lantern have to be fearless?
No single wording covers every story. The classic Showcase #22 solicitation uses “born without fear,” while later storytelling often focuses on overcoming fear. In a 2016 DC interview, writer Sam Humphries described the ring’s choice in terms of a person’s “ability to overcome great fear,” and said that their life experiences matter. That is a creator’s explanation in an interview, not a universal mechanical checklist for every continuity. Read the DC interview with Sam Humphries.

Jessica Cruz is one example of the later emphasis. DC frames her courage around living with anxiety and continuing despite trauma, rather than never experiencing fear. Her story treats courage as something a person demonstrates, not an absence of difficult feelings. DC’s Jessica Cruz feature discusses that characterization.
Could the ring have chosen someone besides Hal?
Yes. Guy Gardner was a genuine alternative in the origin story. DC says Abin Sur’s ring might have chosen Guy; another DC feature explains that Guy nearly inherited it, but Hal was closer when the choice had to be made. So Hal’s selection does not establish that he was the only person who could ever qualify.

Guy later served as a substitute Lantern after Hal and the Guardians chose him for that role. He became a full-time Lantern when the Corps accepted that Sector 2814 could have more than one. The distinction matters: being a possible successor in Abin Sur’s origin, serving as a substitute, and later becoming a full-time Lantern are separate events. DC’s saga retrospective and DC’s feature on Guy Gardner cover the history.

No. The answer depends on the continuity or adaptation. The familiar mainline comic origin has Abin Sur’s ring seek a successor, but other versions change how a bearer gets a ring or what qualifies them.

| Version | How the ring or role is assigned | Stated criterion or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Mainline comic origin | Abin Sur’s ring seeks a successor and selects Hal; Guy is an alternate candidate. | DC emphasizes Hal’s willpower; the Showcase #22 solicitation also says Abin Sur seeks someone “born without fear.” |
| Green Lantern: Earth One | The rings do not choose their bearers; anyone who obtains one can use it. | Training and practice affect how well a person uses the ring. |
| Green Lantern: First Flight animated film | The adaptation describes heroes as being selected. | Its description emphasizes the strength and will to control their rings. |
DC explicitly distinguishes the Earth One rule from ring selection: “They don’t choose their bearers.” That statement applies to that alternate continuity, not every Green Lantern story. The animated film also has its own description of selection, so its wording should not be treated as a rule for the comics. DC’s article on Green Lantern: Earth One explains the alternate rule; the film’s description is available on DC’s Green Lantern: First Flight page.

Hal Jordan’s debut and the original selection scene are in Showcase #22. DC’s facsimile-edition solicitation identifies it as Hal’s debut and describes Abin Sur’s ring seeking and selecting him. It is a direct place to read the classic version of the origin, rather than a source for one rule that governs every later continuity. See DC’s Showcase #22 facsimile solicitation.
