Check that storefront first: some local methods are available only through a particular payment flow, while a credit or debit card may work where the store accepts it. If neither fits, a region-compatible gift card or wallet code can be an option.
What local payment methods can you use?
Local methods such as PIX, boleto bancário and OXXO are not interchangeable across Latin America, and their availability at one merchant does not mean they work at another. A documented Nintendo option illustrates the distinction: Nintendo Support says, “Players in Mexico can pay using OXXO,” and “Players in Brazil can pay using Boleto Bancário or PIX.” In these examples, the methods are for buying a digital eShop gift card to add funds—not evidence that every Nintendo purchase or every game store accepts those methods directly.

What a PIX checkout can look like
Mercado Pago’s Brazilian consumer guide, dated August 11, 2026, describes a typical PIX flow for games, apps and digital stores: select PIX, scan a QR code or copy the generated code, then complete payment in a financial institution’s app. The guide says confirmation usually takes minutes. That explains the provider’s PIX process; it does not establish that a specific game store accepts Mercado Pago.

Payment choices also depend on the country associated with a payment account. Mercado Pago’s developer documentation lists country-specific options, including PIX, PSE, boleto and OXXO alongside cards and other methods. Treat those as examples of a varied regional payment landscape, not a directory of stores that accept each method.
How cards compare with local methods
A card is a direct checkout route when the particular store accepts it and the payment works with the account and store country. A local payment flow may instead require a QR code, a generated payment code, or buying a platform gift card first. The available evidence does not establish a region-wide winner for cost, speed, reliability or refunds.

Match the payment method to the store and account country
Before trying another card or local method, confirm the country or region on the account and the store you are buying from. Steam’s purchasing-issues guidance says to try a payment method that matches the current store country when a purchase fails. Follow the platform’s country rules rather than changing an account’s region to access a payment method or price.

Use a wallet code when checkout methods do not work
A platform wallet code can separate the payment from the game purchase: buy a compatible code through an available sales channel, redeem it to the account, then spend the balance in the platform store. Steam Support recommends a Steam Wallet code when none of the current checkout methods can be used. Nintendo’s digital eShop gift card and PlayStation’s Mexico gift-card option are other documented examples.

- Confirm the retailer actually has the code you need; availability varies and is not established across the region.
- Compare the price of the code with the amount of wallet balance received, including any currency conversion or fees.
- Check the platform’s refund and support route before choosing a code, because the payment and redemption path may differ from a direct card purchase.
Compare the total cost and practical trade-offs
Do not choose by the payment-method label alone. Compare the final amount shown before confirmation, the currency used, any conversion or bank/provider fees, and whether the method is available for the specific account. The cited sources do not provide a consistent country-by-country comparison of fees, failure rates, refunds or payment reliability, so no one method can be called universally cheapest or most dependable.

- Confirmation: Does checkout show payment as complete, or does the flow require a separate app or code payment? Mercado Pago says its described PIX flow usually confirms within minutes.
- Future payments: If you need a recurring subscription, verify that the method supports recurring charges; wallet balance or a one-time local payment may not.
- Refunds and disputes: Check who handles a refund or payment dispute—the game store, platform, payment provider or card issuer—before you pay.
- Region fit: Make sure the payment method and any redeemed code match the account and storefront country.
What the available market figures do—and do not—show
A PagSeguro-hosted gaming payments report attributes figures of 58% of Brazilian gaming sales by credit card and 27% by PIX to a PagSeguro white paper released in July 2023. Those are figures for the report’s stated Brazilian gaming-sales context, not a current census of Latin America or proof of what any particular store accepts. The same report says local-payment adoption among gaming merchants can remain limited because many merchants are overseas and lack the means to process locally; that is the report’s explanation, not a rule for every merchant.
