Yes—if “home test” means a sample collected at home and analyzed by a qualified laboratory. The available evidence does not establish that consumer-operated strips or gadgets can reliably detect PFAS. Collection at home is not the same as analysis at home: for independent testing, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends a state-certified drinking-water laboratory.
What makes a PFAS water test reliable?
For drinking water, reliability depends on the laboratory’s method and the scope of the result—not simply on whether a sample kit is sold for home use. EPA says laboratories using its Methods 533 and 537.1 can effectively measure a combined total of 29 PFAS in drinking water. Both methods use laboratory analytical instrumentation, including liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. EPA’s PFAS drinking-water laboratory methods identify Method 533 (2019) and Method 537.1, version 2.0 (2020), as approved for UCMR 5 and PFAS National Primary Drinking Water Regulation monitoring.

That 29-compound coverage is not a test for every PFAS. A result applies only to the analytes measured in that sample, under the method and reporting limits used. Method 537.1 superseded Method 537 for most applications, although EPA says Method 537 remains valid.

Ask about modified methods
If a lab advertises a “modified” method, ask what was changed and how the method was validated. EPA says it is not aware of a standardized description or of studies validating such modified methods across multiple laboratories. Do not assume a modified method is interchangeable with an EPA-approved method.

How to arrange a test
If your water comes from a public system
- Ask your water utility whether it has PFAS results. Request the sampling date and location, analyte list, and reporting limits so you can understand what the results represent.
- Check EPA’s UCMR 5 data finder. EPA says the final dataset was released in August 2026.
- If you need an independent sample from your own tap, contact your state’s drinking-water laboratory certification program to find an appropriate certified lab.
Utility results describe the system’s sampling and reporting context; they are not a measurement of every household tap at every time.
If you use a private well
- Contact your state environmental or health agency, or its laboratory-certification program, for testing advice or a list of state-certified labs.
- Confirm that the lab is certified for the relevant drinking-water analysis and ask whether it uses EPA Method 533, Method 537.1, or another method.
- Follow the lab’s exact collection, preservation, and shipping instructions. Ask which PFAS it reports, its reporting limits, how it labels nondetects, and whether it serves your area.
EPA recommends contacting a state-certified drinking-water laboratory for independent testing. Private wells are not regulated by EPA in the same way as public water systems. Certification and available services vary by state; see EPA’s state certification program and certified laboratory contacts.

What a result can—and cannot—tell you
A laboratory report is specific to the sample collected, the compounds in the panel, and the analytical and reporting limits. A nondetect means the lab did not report that analyte above its applicable reporting threshold; it does not establish that every PFAS is absent. When comparing reports, check the analyte list, sampling date and location, method, and reporting limits rather than treating a result as a universal statement about a water supply.

Testing is different from filtering
A filter treats water; it does not test for PFAS or validate a lab result. If you are considering treatment, EPA advises looking for independent PFAS-reduction certification, including NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58, and following the manufacturer’s replacement instructions. EPA says current certifications focus on PFOA and PFOS and, as of April 2024, do not establish that a filter will reduce PFAS to EPA drinking-water standard levels. See EPA’s guidance on filters for reducing PFAS.
How to evaluate a lab before paying
- Certification: Is it state-certified for the relevant drinking-water analysis?
- Method: Does it use an EPA method, and is the method modified?
- Panel: Which PFAS are included? A limited panel is not a test for every PFAS.
- Reporting: What are the reporting limits, and how are nondetects shown?
- Sampling: What collection and shipping instructions must you follow?
- Service details: Does the lab serve your location, and what turnaround does it provide?
How to read the EPA drinking-water limits in context
EPA’s April 10, 2024 final drinking-water rule set limits of 4.0 parts per trillion (ppt) each for PFOA and PFOS, and 10 ppt each for PFHxS, PFNA, and HFPO-DA (GenX). EPA’s current PFAS page also describes changes proposed on May 18, 2026: the proposal would retain PFOA and PFOS regulation while allowing systems to request two additional years, to 2031, to comply, and would rescind regulation of PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA, and the specified mixture hazard index. Those changes are proposals, not finalized changes. A lab result should be interpreted against the applicable rule and its status, not mistaken for an individual medical assessment. See EPA’s PFAS drinking-water regulation information.
