Configure dbForge for the specific database engine and product you use: connection fields and security controls differ between tools. In dbForge Studio for MySQL, security options include SSL and SSH tunneling; in dbForge Studio for SQL Server, connection encryption is an Advanced-tab option. Enter the server-approved settings, test the connection, and save credentials only as your organization permits.
Identify your dbForge product and database engine
These steps cover dbForge Studio for MySQL and dbForge Studio for SQL Server, not every Devart product. Confirm both the installed product and the server’s engine before following a workflow. Menu names can vary by version; check the documentation for your version and your administrator’s connection requirements.

In the documented Studio workflows, open Database > New Connection to access the connection properties. Start with the server or host, authentication method, credentials, and intended database. Devart’s MySQL connection guide describes TCP/IP or named pipe connections. For TCP/IP, enter the host and port specified for your server. The guide gives 3306 as the default MySQL port, but the server may use another port.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor SQL Server
Choose the server and the authentication method required by your environment, enter credentials if that method requires them, and select the database. The dbForge Studio for SQL Server connection guide lists Windows, SQL Server, and several Azure Active Directory authentication modes. Ask the server administrator which mode is configured and approved rather than choosing based on convenience.
#1 Best Overall
For a custom SQL Server port, the cited guide says to add a comma and the port to the server name; its example is localhost,62005. Use your server’s actual hostname and port.
Choose the security path your server supports
For MySQL, the cited Studio documentation describes SSL and SSH tunneling as separate configuration paths. They are not interchangeable: use the one supported and required by your server setup. For SQL Server, configure the encryption option in the SQL Server Studio dialog and follow the server organization’s encryption and certificate requirements.
Rank #2
MySQL with SSL
- In the connection properties, open Security and enable the security protocol.
- Select SSL, then enter the file locations for the client key, client certificate, and authority certificate as required by your server.
- Fill in the general connection details and test the connection.
See Devart’s SSL connection instructions for the documented fields. Use certificate files issued or approved for your environment; do not substitute files or paths based on guesswork.
MySQL through an SSH tunnel
- Open Security in the connection properties and enable SSH.
- Choose password or public-key authentication, then enter the SSH host, port, user, and the authentication material required for that method.
- Enter the MySQL host and port in relation to the SSH server, using the routing details provided by your administrator.
- Test the connection.
Devart’s SSH connection guide documents port 22 as the SSH default and 3306 as the MySQL default; verify both with your administrator. Devart says data transmitted over the SSH connection is encrypted. That statement describes the tunnel’s transmission path; it does not establish that every other aspect of the database connection or account is secure.
Rank #3
SQL Server connection encryption
In dbForge Studio for SQL Server, open the Advanced tab and select Encrypt connection when required by your server configuration. The cited setup instructions document this as an option, not a universal policy for every SQL Server deployment. Follow your organization’s encryption and certificate requirements, including any server-side requirements for certificates.
Save only appropriate credentials and labels
The documented connection dialogs include password-saving options. The SQL Server Studio guide says password saving is enabled by default and can be cleared; the MySQL connection settings also document a password-saving option. On shared or managed machines, follow your organization’s credential-handling policy and avoid saving a password if policy or device access makes that inappropriate.
Where the dialog offers an environment category—such as Development, Production, Sandbox, or Test—use it to label the connection clearly. This is a recognition aid, not an access-control or security feature. Similarly, MySQL’s option to show all available databases affects what is displayed in the connection interface; it is not a replacement for database permissions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Test the connection, then adjust timeouts only if needed
Use Test Connection when the dialog provides it, before relying on the saved connection. The test checks whether the settings entered can connect at that time. It does not prove that permissions are appropriately limited, that all security requirements are met, or that the connection will remain reliable under different network or workload conditions.

Timeout settings govern different stages. The SQL Server Studio connection page lists defaults of 15 seconds for connection timeout and 0 seconds for execution timeout. Devart’s MySQL advanced-settings page lists the same defaults. In those pages, connection timeout concerns establishing the connection; execution timeout concerns task completion. Treat these as documented product defaults, not a guarantee that they suit every server, network, or workload. Change them only to address a specific operational need and in coordination with the database administrator.
Troubleshoot a failed connection test
Check the settings in a deliberate order, comparing each with values supplied by the server administrator:
- Server and host: confirm the hostname or server name is correct and reachable from your machine.
- Port and route: verify the server port. For an SSH setup, verify both the SSH endpoint and the MySQL endpoint as seen from the tunnel.
- Database: confirm the intended database exists and that the account is permitted to connect to it.
- Authentication: check that the selected mode matches the server configuration and that the username and credentials or key are correct.
- Security fields: for MySQL SSL, verify the certificate and key paths and that the files are the ones required by the server. For SSH, check the host, port, authentication method, and credentials or key. For SQL Server, confirm the encryption selection and certificate expectations with the administrator.
- Network access: ask whether a firewall, VPN, allowlist, or server-side policy restricts access from your current network.
If the values appear correct but the test still fails, use the error message and server-side logs with your administrator to narrow down the cause. This checklist covers common settings to inspect; it is not exhaustive.
