In the massive galaxies at the centers of groups and clusters, this “feedback” can keep hot gas from cooling too quickly, reducing the long-term supply of cold fuel for star formation and sometimes limiting the black hole’s own fuel supply. The effect is not simply a galaxy-wide off switch: ultraviolet observations also show young stars in knots and filaments around some jets and jet-inflated bubbles. The best-supported picture is self-regulation—broad suppression of runaway cooling alongside localized star formation—while the details of how jet energy heats gas across tens of kiloparsecs remain an active research problem.
What a black hole jet is
A black hole jet is a narrow outflow launched by an active galactic nucleus (AGN), the region around a supermassive black hole that is accreting matter. Gas and dust spiraling inward become extremely hot. Under conditions that are still being studied in detail, magnetic fields collimate part of this material into two opposed, fast-moving jets. NASA describes some extragalactic jets extending up to hundreds of thousands of light-years—far beyond the central region where they originate.

The jet itself is not a beam that simply sweeps stars away. Its most important evolutionary effect usually comes from the interaction of its energy, momentum and magnetic fields with the surrounding gas. In a massive galaxy or a cluster core, that gas can fill a region tens to roughly 100 kiloparsecs across. It is hot enough to shine in X-rays, but it can still lose energy by radiation. If it cools, denser clouds can form, feeding both new stars and, in some cases, the central black hole.

The feedback cycle, step by step
- Hot gas begins to cool. Gravity holds a large reservoir of tenuous plasma in the galaxy’s halo or in the intracluster medium. Radiation removes energy, allowing some of the gas to condense into cooler clouds.
- Some cooled material forms stars. Dense clouds can collapse into star-forming regions. This is one route by which a central galaxy grows.
- Some material reaches the black hole. A fraction of the cooling gas loses enough angular momentum to flow toward the nucleus. Accretion powers the AGN and can launch jets.
- The jets disturb and heat their surroundings. Expanding jet-inflated cavities displace the X-ray-emitting plasma. Shocks, sound waves, turbulence, buoyant bubbles and cosmic rays can all transfer energy or momentum to the ambient gas.
- Cooling is slowed. If heating roughly balances radiative losses, less gas condenses into the cold phase. Star formation and the supply of fuel to the black hole both decline.
- The engine can fade. With less inflowing cold gas, accretion weakens and the jets become less powerful. Cooling can then resume, creating a regulating loop rather than a one-time event.
NASA’s Chandra analysis of more than 200 galaxy clusters described evidence consistent with this precipitation-feedback picture. In the systems studied, the regulation had been operating for at least 7 billion years. That duration refers to the interpretation of the cluster sample, not to a claim that every galaxy has maintained identical jet activity for that entire time.

Where the effect is strongest
Jet feedback matters most when a galaxy has a large, dense reservoir of hot gas that would otherwise cool. Central galaxies in clusters are the clearest examples, but massive group galaxies and some isolated giant ellipticals can also show the relevant signatures. The same jet power can have a different outcome in a thin halo, a gas-rich disk, or an environment already disturbed by mergers.
| System or scale | Typical question | What jets can do | Evidence or qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cluster core | Will the X-ray-bright plasma condense rapidly? | Inflate cavities, drive waves and turbulence, and offset part of the radiative cooling. | X-ray bubbles associated with radio jets are direct evidence of radio-mode feedback; the balance is not necessarily exact at every moment. |
| Massive group or elliptical galaxy | How much cold gas reaches the central galaxy? | Heat or stir the halo, reducing the supply of cold gas available for widespread star formation. | Outcome varies with halo mass, gas density and jet history. |
| Near a jet or bubble edge | Can gas locally become dense enough to form stars? | Compression and uplift may help create filaments or knots even while the wider reservoir is regulated. | Hubble ultraviolet studies found young-star structures in some systems; this does not show that every jet triggers stars. |
| Beyond the host halo | Can energy reach the surrounding intracluster medium? | Large cavities and propagating disturbances carry energy away from the nucleus. | The transport and thermalization mechanism across cooling regions approaching roughly 100 kiloparsecs remains unsettled. |
How much star formation can be reduced?
A.C. Fabian’s 2012 review in the Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics described systems in which a roughly continuous energy flow from the AGN reduced radiative cooling and subsequent star formation by about an order of magnitude. This is a review-level characterization of the systems discussed, not a universal factor that applies to every galaxy, epoch or jet episode.
The physical reason is straightforward: stars need cold, dense gas. Heating the already-hot atmosphere does not remove existing stars, but it can prevent more gas from joining the cold reservoir. Over long periods, that changes the galaxy’s growth rate, its ratio of old to young stars and the amount of fuel available to the central black hole.

Jets are therefore one part of a broader feedback history. High-accretion AGN can also drive wider-angle winds, radiation pressure and other outflows. In the framework discussed by the NASA-hosted Astro2020 white paper, collimated jets are commonly associated with a lower-accretion “maintenance” or radio mode that helps keep massive halos quiescent, while powerful winds may contribute to earlier, more rapid quenching. This is a useful hypothesis, not an absolute division: real AGN can change state, and more than one process can operate at once.
Why suppression does not mean “no stars”
Jets can coexist with, and perhaps help organize, localized star formation. NASA’s Hubble reports describe ultraviolet-bright young stars in filaments and knots connected to jets or lying along the rims of jet-inflated bubbles. These structures are different from a galaxy-wide increase in its star-formation rate. A jet may compress or lift a parcel of gas while its heating prevents the surrounding reservoir from cooling wholesale.
“That atmosphere can contain material in different states, just like our own atmosphere has gas, clouds, and rain.”

The observations fit a multiphase atmosphere: hot plasma, cooler clouds and condensed filaments occupy the same broad environment. Grant Tremblay, lead of the second Hubble study at Yale University, described the spatial link this way:
“We know that these showers are linked to the jets because they’re found in filaments and tendrils that wrap around the jets or hug the edges of giant bubbles that the jets have inflated.”
Such findings support localized “positive” effects inside an overall regulating cycle. They do not establish that jets trigger every observed star-forming knot, nor that the net star-formation rate of the host galaxy rises.

Maintenance jets versus quasar winds
| Feature | Maintenance or radio-mode feedback | High-accretion or quasar-mode feedback |
|---|---|---|
| Outflow geometry | Narrow, collimated relativistic jets. | Wider-angle winds and radiation-driven outflows are commonly emphasized. |
| Typical role in the framework | Maintain a hot halo and limit renewed cooling after a galaxy is already relatively quiescent. | Contribute to stronger, earlier expulsion or heating of gas during a high-accretion phase. |
| Best-known signatures | Radio jets, X-ray cavities, shocks, sound waves and uplifted filaments. | Broad outflowing gas, rapid winds and radiation effects; the exact mix depends on the AGN. |
| Certainty | A widely used interpretation for massive galaxies and cluster cores, with direct cavity evidence. | A common evolutionary framework, but not a rule that assigns every AGN to one permanent mode. |
How astronomers tell what a jet is doing
No single wavelength provides the whole answer. Researchers compare measurements that trace different phases of gas and different distances from the nucleus.
- Radio maps reveal the jets and their lobes, showing direction, extent and changes in activity.
- X-ray images and spectra show hot gas, cavities, shocks and temperature or density changes around those cavities.
- Ultraviolet and optical observations identify young stars, emission-line filaments and cooler gas near bubbles and jet paths.
- Infrared and molecular measurements trace dust and cold clouds that can become stars or feed the nucleus.
- Velocity measurements test whether gas is inflowing, outflowing, turbulent or circulating around buoyant bubbles.
When comparing two systems, keep five axes separate: the host environment (isolated galaxy, group or cluster), the AGN activity mode, the gas phase and cooling state, the spatial scale being measured, and the type of evidence. A radio jet extending far outside the galaxy and a young stellar knot beside a bubble are related observations, but they answer different questions.
What scientists still do not know
The central uncertainty is how energy released within a region close to the black hole is deposited throughout a cooling atmosphere that can approach roughly 100 kiloparsecs. The Astro2020 white paper identifies several possible channels:
Best Value
- sound waves and weak shocks launched by changing jet power;
- turbulence stirred by expanding lobes and rising bubbles;
- sloshing and buoyancy waves in the surrounding plasma;
- cosmic rays that stream or diffuse out of the bubbles and heat the gas.
Different systems may rely on different mixtures. Determining the dominant channel requires measurements of density, temperature, pressure and velocity, together with better constraints on what the bubbles contain—thermal plasma, magnetic fields, relativistic particles or some combination. Until those measurements are available, “the jets heat the gas” is a sound description of the overall energy budget, but not a complete microphysical explanation.
There are also limits on how broadly the cluster results can be applied. The evidence is strongest for massive systems with substantial hot atmospheres. It does not show that all black-hole jets quench all galaxies, that one mechanism works identically at every cosmic epoch, or that jets are the only source of feedback. Galaxy mergers, stellar winds, radiation and environment can alter the outcome.
A practical way to interpret a new jet observation
- Identify the scale. Is the claim about gas within the jet, a cavity tens of kiloparsecs away, or the galaxy’s total star-formation rate?
- Identify the phase of gas. X-rays trace the hot atmosphere; ultraviolet and optical lines can trace young stars and cooler filaments; molecular lines trace the cold fuel reservoir.
- Check the environment. A central cluster galaxy has a much larger hot-gas supply than a small isolated galaxy.
- Separate association from causation. A star-forming filament beside a jet demonstrates coexistence and a plausible interaction, not automatic jet-triggered star formation.
- Ask what balances what. Evidence for cavities and heating addresses whether cooling is being offset; it does not by itself measure the final change in stellar mass.
Bottom line
Black hole jets influence galaxy evolution mainly by regulating gas. In massive galaxies and cluster cores, they can inflate cavities, drive waves and turbulence, and heat the hot atmosphere enough to slow the condensation of cold star-forming material. That limits long-term growth and can regulate the black hole’s own fuel supply. At the same time, compressed or uplifted gas near jets and bubbles can form localized stars. The robust conclusion is therefore self-regulation—not universal shutdown—with the detailed route from jet energy to galaxy-wide change still being worked out.
